Friday snark briefs

Yada yada, unions rock, yada yada, corporate thieves, yada yada: Sally Kohn, a “community organizer” (really, wtf is that supposed to mean?), sings the praises of unions. This part, however, is in great need of correction:

There’s an old bumper sticker that reads, “Like your weekend? Thank a union!”

Nope. Thank the Jews. Before Shabbat, people worked seven days a week. There was no such thing as a day off for the working people. H/T: chsw.

How stupid are anti-Israel conspiracy theories? This stupid. The wife of a missing Palestinian says Israel kidnapped him because he’s a senior manager at a key power plant in Gaza. And they wanted to sabotage Gaza’s power plant. Sure. That’s absolutely why Israel would grab someone off a train in the Ukraine. Oh, and check out the photo the AP sends with the story. What a heartbreaking shot of a little girl holding a picture of her missing daddy. Those mean, mean Israelis! Is the guy a Hamasnik and a terrorist? It doesn’t matter, because this cute little girl misses him.

Not looking good for the rebel alliance: The madman is winning in Libya. Send lawyers, guns, and money. (Yes, a movie and song reference in one post. I can multitask.)

Friday tsunami briefs

Awful: One of the largest earthquakes in history spawned a tsunami that devastated the east coast of Japan. I have a friend living on the west coast, and coworkers in Hawaii and Guam. The tsunami is scheduled to hit the west coast of the U.S. around 11-11:30 a.m.

This is why I’ll never buy stocks again: I totally do not understand the market. Now, I get that the Saudis cracking down heavily on protests today is a good thing for oil prices, because an unstable Saudi Arabia will utterly devastate the market. But I don’t understand why Japan’s shutting down its refineries in the wake of the tsunami caused oil prices to drop. You would think, logically, that it would cause speculators to bet that oil prices are going to go up again. And here’s what an analyst says:

“The earthquake is having a psychological impact on the market in triggering a rise in risk aversion,” said Carsten Fritsch, an analyst at Commerzbank AG in Frankfurt. “The effect is also physical, in that oil demand from Japan could temporarily be lower.”

Um. Japan is really not all that big a consumer of oil compared to, say, China. I really, really don’t get this stuff.

The tsunami hits Hawaii: They had plenty of time to prepare, so they should be all right, except for property damage.

Okay, a non-tsunami news brief: Worrying is so stressful, here’s a funny story: Ohio sent a woman a letter saying that she’d be getting a tax refund of $200 million. Of course, it was a software glitch. The woman laughed when she read the letter. I’d have scanned it and posted it online.

Thank heaven for Facebook: My former teaching assistant, who now teaches English on the southwest coast of Japan, is safe and sound. I sent out a friend request when I started writing this post, and it’s already been answered.

Though I say it myself

You know, the new header is pretty damned good. I like looking at it every day.

I think I’m going to have to pat myself on the back over this one.

Thursday briefs

The second time, as farce: Seriously? Bad enough Madman Gaddaffy got Libya on the Human Rights Council, now Syria’s looking to take his place. And you know what? I bet Assad will get it. But then, half the members of the council have awful human rights record, so really, what difference will it make?

Oh, look. Another British anti-Israel media event. Yawn. But sure, they’re great friends of Israel. Just ask them.

It’s a rocket shower, just like those “crude, homemade” kassam things: Really, who writes the AP headlines? Seriously? “Gadhafi showers strategic oil port with rockets”? What’s wrong with the word “pounds”?

The new civil tone: Well, if you’re a Republican, apparently, this counts as civil behavior towards you:

Senate Republicans were harried by swarming crowds. “We tried to get out of the building after the vote, because they were rushing the chamber, and we were escorted by security through a tunnel system to another building. But, after being tipped off by a Democrat, they mobbed the exit at that building, and were literally trying to break the windows of the cars we were in as we were driving away,” Republican senator Randy Hopper tells NRO. Such tactics, he sighs, were hardly unexpected. “I got a phone call yesterday saying that we should be executed. I’ve had messages saying that they want to beat me with a billy club.”

Think it got much play in the Times? Imagine if these had been Tea Partiers mobbing Dems. Oh, the humanity!

Fighting the anti-Israel forces

Elder of Ziyon discovered something that some of us have known for a long time: Being a big fish in the blogosphere doesn’t mean a lot of people have heard of you elsewhere.

So he needs help distributing his anti-“Apartheid” week posters.

Please pass this link on to every leader of a Jewish organization, student or not, that you know of, but especially send this on to people involved with colleges.

Compare and contrast, freedom version

In Egypt, women marching for equal rights were harassed, sexually assaulted, and beaten. Thousands of men surrounded hundreds of women and drove them from Tahrir Square on International Women’s Day. The AP headline for this story?

Egyptian women’s rights protest marred by hecklers

Right. “Heckled” is the headline, though the body of the story contains the facts.

Also in Egypt, Muslims torched a Coptic Christian church. Why? Because a Muslim and a Christian were dating, and the father of the Muslim refused to murder his child for dating a Christian. The Muslims murdered the father, and then attacked the Christians. Christians fought back. There are now pitched battles in Egypt between Christians and Muslims.

In Libya, Madman Gaddaffy is flattening towns where the people are rebelling against him, and also bombing oil production terminals.

In Israel, the government has postponed by several months the decision to deport children of foreign workers who are not legal citizens of Israel.

In Ramallah, the PA censored a TV show making fun of Madman Gaddaffy.

Israel is ranged number 2 globally for having women in upper management positions in corporations.

Oh, and Israeli Jews don’t murder their women for intermarrying.

But by all means, let’s vilify Israel during the annual Israeli Apartheid festivals at universities worldwide. Because that’s where the problems are in the Middle East.

Semper Fi

My nephew arrived in boot camp sometime early Tuesday morning. His parents got the “I’m here safe and sound” phone call at 1:20 a.m.

I’ll be visiting Parris Island in about three months, watching a group of young men and women officially become Marines. I’ll be sure to post pictures.

I am very, very proud of my nephew. He has grown up to be an amazing young man.

Sign these kids up for EATAPETA Day

“Meatless Monday” at Bowdoin college backfired, big-time. The students organized a protest by finding their own ways to eat meat for dinner.

Dozens of students held an impromptu barbecue outside one facility in protest. Two other students sold McDonald’s cheeseburgers while simultaneously raising funds for a local humane society. Another group of students ate buckets of Kentucky Fried Chicken inside the dining hall.

How is it that no matter how often it’s tried, people who think that forcing us to do what they think is right simply create resistance to whatever their cause was in the first place?

But Doug Johnston, a junior who helped organize the barbecue (and who said he and his friends consider themselves generally to be liberal), said that as soon as he heard about Meatless Monday, “we were saying, ‘This isn’t quite right.’ ”

He explained that “the assumption that is implied by saying we need to raise awareness by having Meatless Monday is that people aren’t aware,” which he questions. “I think taking away the option to moderately eat meat from those who are aware of the issues — it upset me, that they decided I shouldn’t have access to meat on Monday, denying the option to eat meat even moderately.”

Johnston found an irony in the fact that much of the “Meatless Monday” campaign focused on eating less meat, in having a more balanced diet, yet the organizers made the day completely meat-free.

Note that the kids are self-identified liberals, and even they are rebelling against the nanny statism of the college. I think the kids coming out of high school and college today are far more independent than they are made out to be. I think you’re going to see the pendulum swing back to the middle, after being so far left, for so long. The battle over the unions in Wisconsin is just the first of many.

Tuesday briefs

What do you mean, you don’t trust the Palestinians? Netanyahu says the IDF needs to stay in the Jordan Valley. Of course this will get spun as if the Israelis are enacting yet another “land grab” (the AP’s favorite phrase to describe Israelis in, say, east Jerusalem), but the fact of the matter is that when Israel gave up the Philadelphi corridor between Gaza and Egypt, the smuggling of weapons commenced early and often. But hey, if it’s up to the world, Israel is going to be forced to take part in its own execution, just like the Jews of yesteryear.

Anti-Semitism Israel “Apartheid” month commences: Phyllis Chesler has a great piece about how the left is just using Israel for its protest fix. Via.

Jews against Jews? So the Jews Zionists control the media, except at NPR, and this guy, who has a Jewish last name, is only too happy to agree with undercover citizen journalists posing as Muslims offering $5 million to NPR. So, Ron Schiller—are you Jewish? Because if you are, that makes your actions even more offensive.

When the man pretending to be Kasaam suggests to Schiller that “Jews do kind of control the media or, I mean, certainly the Zionists and the people who have the interests in swaying media coverage toward a favorable direction of Israel,” Schiller does not rebut him or stop eating. He just nods his head slightly.

Well done, Ron! Well done! Another reason for me to continue to refuse to fund NPR. For the record, I don’t think we should defund all government funds for programming. I like the Richmond PBS station, and think the PBS stations give programming we would not otherwise get. NPR, on the other hand—buh-bye.

Mini-Durban: It’s on, Israel! The UN is bashing Israel again. Because it’s not like there’s anything else going on in the Middle East of note.

Monday briefs

Gee, that’s a shocker: Israel is one of the least popular countries in the world, followed only by Iran, North Korea, and Pakistan. How can that be? After all, it’s not like the media has a 24/7 anti-Israel narrative going, banging on every single negative aspect of anything they can find on Israel or anything like that. I mean, really. Israel is unpopular? Who knew?

The surprise would be if they could find a single pro-Israeli Egyptian: Egypt’s new FM hates Israel. Yawn.

Wow, gas prices are sure going up fast! Gee. We need more oil. Hey, there are these rigs offshore that could get oil to us really fast, over 200,000 barrels a day! But wait—the Obama administration refuses to issue the permits to allow the drilling. So what shall we do to cut the cost of oil? I know! Let’s think about tapping the reserves, but of course, not do it. And why is that? Because Obama wants high gas prices. He wants to force Americans to conserve. The fact that high oil prices will cause all sectors of the American economy to raise prices? It’s okay. He can print more money or something. What a tool. By the way, to all of you conservatives who sat on your hands because you didn’t like McCain enough to vote for him? How do you like him now? And oh yeah—Obama’s raising money for 2012. We might have this jerk for eight years. But hey, you didn’t vote for a RINO, so good for you!

This is interesting: Shoah, the French documentary about the Holocaust, is going to be broadcast in Iran, in Farsi, on a satellite channel. I keep hearing that the average Iranians don’t hate Israel or Jews. If that’s true, this will be a very good thing.

Seriously? We were selling Libya APCs? The Obama administration was going to sell Libya APCs. Seriously? I mean, seriously? And the Bush administration sold Libya weapons, too?

Sometimes, I hate our government.

Been doing a little site updating

Cleaning out the blogroll, updating sites if possible, deleting dead sites, and wow, Angie Schultz is still blogging. I know she’s still around, because I get the occasional comment or email, but Angie’s been blogging nearly as long as I have. A shout-out to Angie, who lives far, far away, as I recall.

Kate‘s still blogging away, too. And Mac Thomason, though he and I are on opposites sides of the political fence these days (but I still like you, Mac!). Dustbury, Cold Fury, Jim Miller—wow, lots of people from the old days are still blogging. Patti‘s still here, too. Shirl‘s moved, but she’s still here. (Shelley Powers moved, too.)

These are all voices from my past. My tenth blogiversary is coming up. Nostalgia is setting in.

All the Forces?

Speaking to a group of Jewish donors in Miami, according to the Jerusalem Post, President Obama said the following:

All the forces that we see building in Egypt are the forces that should be naturally aligned with the US, [and] should be aligned with Israel,” he told attendees of the Florida fundraising event.

“I’m actually confident that 10 years from now we’re going to be able to look back and say that this was the dawning of an entirely new and better era,” he added. The US president expressed his hope that the new era would be one in which “people are striving not to be against something but to be for something.”

I can probably go with “some,” but not “all”. Really? “All?” Mr. President? “All?“such as the forces that decided it would be fun to attack Lara Logan in Tahrir Square while shouting “Jew! Jew!”? Such as the forces that decided to invite Sheik Qaradawi to spew hatred of Jews to the throngs there while preventing the advocate for democracy Wael Ghonim from speaking? Such as the ones that murdered a woman’s father because he did not kill her in an honor killing for having a relationship with a Christian, then burned down the Coptic Church terrorizing the town’s Christians, and followed that by triumphantly holding prayer services on the site of the burned down church? How about the forces that are demanding an end to the peace treaty with Israel? Those forces?

If you see those forces as naturally allied with America and Israel, Mr. President, I don’t think you have an understanding of the values of America and Israel or those of the forces about whom you speak. Simply opposing one form of tyranny, nationalist dictatorship, while backing another that is potentially far worse, theocracy, hardly qualifies as being naturally allied with America and Israel, even if there is a democratic election that brings it about. Advocacy for free elections does not mean at all that there is a desire that those elections produce a government that would be allied with America and Israel.

Mr. President, some of those forces building in Egypt would burn down your own church if they had a chance. They would certainly torch my synagogue. And if a mosque were to publicly condemn their actions, it would probably get torched too. They murdered a man for not murdering his daughter. I don’t think they would have qualms about flicking a Bic.

Is there reason for hope in the region? Yes. Is everything a reason for hope? Are “all the forces building in Egypt” those that give us reason to hope? If the answer for you is “Yes?” I must ask what kind of shrooms were served at that dinner? We might need to call the Narc Squad in.

Mr. President, you ran on a platform of hope. I too hope. I wish to see the good out there. I too hope to see good triumph. But I am not blinded by hope. Nor am I responsible for the future of the world as to a extent you are as President of the United States and that is what scares me. Mr. President, I hope that you are right about Egypt. Unfortunately, I’m worried that your vision is but a hope and a false hope at that.

Why do I fear that you are wrong? Mr. President, you might as well have said that you have spoken with the enemy and they have promised “peace in our time.” Meanwhile, minorities go into hiding, women are attacked, churches burn and freedom remains at a distance, perhaps even having retreated.

Because it is abundantly clear that some of the forces building in Egypt are anything but ones naturally allied with America and Israel, I know that your understanding that “all” should be allied with us cannot be correct. I just hope that you are not so incorrect as to result in disaster.

The last time a leader talked about “peace in our time”, things did not work out very well.

The power of the Jew-haters

The Pope has put into writing that Catholics can no longer blame all the Jews for the death of Jesus. He says that people have been misinterpreting the phrase “the Jews” to mean all Jews, then and forever, when it actually just means the leaders of the Jews who called for Jesus to die. And while that is indeed a positive thing, the state of world Jew-hatred is still pretty damned bad.

Religious anti-Semitism is only one part of the Jew hatred in the world today, and Christian anti-Semitism lags far behind Muslim anti-Semitism as a leading cause of Jew hatred. Muslim anti-Semitism has been thoroughly institutionalized throughout the Arab and Muslim world, so much so that when the dictators fall—the ones who have used the Jew Blame Game to keep their wretched masses from realizing who, exactly, was making them so wretched (and here’s a hint: It wasn’t the Jews)—it doesn’t matter. Their people still hate the Jews.

The Obama administration is preparing for more Islamist governments to take over the Middle East, which means it’s more likely that the governments will be more hostile to Israel. And by “preparing,” I’m pretty sure it doesn’t mean “Trying to get them to stop hating Jews and Israel.” Not that that would be an expected goal of United States foreign policy. After all, it’s far more important to tell the Muslim world that we’re working on the fantasy “Islamophobia” than to tell them to stop producing 41-part miniseries based on The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. And who did that? Why, Hosni Mubarak’s Egypt, that’s who. And there was a sequel. Refusing to sell Israel gas that was paid and contracted for is only one tiny step the Islamists will take. Israel is surrounded by Islamic nations who have been raised to hate Israelis and Jews, and who will soon control the armies of those nations. NOTE: The miniseries was produced in 2002, so no, I’m not blaming Obama for it. It is merely an example of the institutionaized Jew-hatred that has been ignored by successive administrations. To see the modern Jew-hatred, one needs only look at the reports on the news by Hosni Mubarak that the Egyptian protests were being helped along by “Israeli spies.” Because in the Middle East, you can never go wrong by blaming the Jews.

The anti-Semitism of celebrities seems to really shock the world at large. Mel Gibson gets drunk and spouts Jew-hatred; the world issues a collective gasp—even though this was years after Gibson baited Jews in order to propel his movie about Christ to the news cycle and thus get millions of dollars of free publicity. I recall getting into blogwars with people who thought I was imagining that Gibson had a Jewish problem. My anti-Semitism detector may be set lower than most, but it’s almost never wrong.

Last year we saw that Helen Thomas, the former “dean” of the White House Press Corps, whose anti-Israel views were extremely well known, let slip the mask of her true Jew hatred. And every time she opens her mouth now on Israel, another drool of venom slips out. Charlie Sheen decided that calling Chuck Lorre (born Charles Levine) “Haim Levine” was the thing to do in a rant, denying that he had any bad intent. Sure. Calling him “Jewboy”? Too overt. Calling him “Haim” (sounds so much like Hymie, too!)? Defensible. Sure.

Indefensible is the designer John Galliano’s little rant about how much he adored Hitler. Natalie Portman wasn’t the only one disgusted. But of course, Galliano has his defenders, who point out that he was drunk, and we all say things we don’t mean when we’re drunk, right? Like Mel Gibson. He didn’t mean it the first time. Or the second. Or the third. Drunkenness causes anti-Semitism, didn’t you know that?

And then, of course, we come to the elephant in the room. Anti-Zionism is the anti-Semitism of the 21st century. Hatred for the Jewish state comes in all shapes and sizes, and some of the most vehement hatred I’ve seen has been in comments on British newspaper sites from atheists. Those who profess themselves to be above all this silly religious fantasy simply froth at the mouth when discussing Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. And it’s not just the atheists. The communists, the socialists, the rich, the poor—it’s simply an amazing cross-section of Europeans who hate Israel with a fiery passion. But of course, they don’t hate Jews. No. When European Muslims attack Jews, though, isn’t it because of Israel? That’s what they tell their Jewish populations. If only there were a Palestinian state, there would be no attacks on Jews, no Jew-hatred, no drunken rants by foppish fashion designers, no chants of “Jews to the gas” at soccer matches, no need to have empty stadiums when Israeli teams compete in Europe—no, all these things will disappear when there is a state called Palestine (that will, of course, have no Jews in it).

So I’d have to conclude by saying thanks to the Pope. We do appreciate your attempt to stop your followers from hating us. (And believe me, I’ve met my fair share of Jew-hating Catholics.) Now if only the Pope had a bit more influence over the rest of the world.

Muslims Attack Coptic Community in Egypt

Read this story about Muslims attacking the Coptic community in Egypt.

According to the story, Muslims killed the father of a Muslim woman who had some sort of relationship with a Copt because he would not kill her in an honor killing. Then family members attacked the Muslims who killed the father. The Muslim community in Soul, Atfif in Helwan Governorate then attacked en masse the entire Copt community, burned the church to the ground, and held prayers on the site.

You can see up to date info about what is going on by searching “#copts” at www.twitter.com
There is of course zero mention of this on any of the news networks.
