Dueling speeches: Abbas v. Netanyahu

Jonathan Tobin has a compare-and-contrast analysis of Mahmoud Abbas’ speech, followed by Bibi Netanyahu’s. In a nutshell: Abbas lied, Palestine died. You can hear (or read) for yourself.

A year ago, at this same time, distinguished leaders in this hall addressed the stalled peace efforts in our region. Everyone had high hopes for a new round of final status negotiations, which had begun in early September in Washington under the direct auspices of President Barack Obama and with participation of the Quartet, and with Egyptian and Jordanian participation, to reach a peace agreement within one year. We entered those negotiations with open hearts and attentive ears and sincere intentions, and we were ready with our documents, papers and proposals. But the negotiations broke down just weeks after their launch.

And why did they break down? Because Abbas withdrew from talks after insisting he would not negotiate with Israel without a full settlement freeze in all of the West Bank and Jerusalem. So much for the open hearts.

After this, we did not give up and did not cease our efforts for initiatives and contacts. Over the past year we did not leave a door to be knocked or channel to be tested or path to be taken and we did not ignore any formal or informal party of influence and stature to be addressed. We positively considered the various ideas and proposals and initiatives presented from many countries and parties. But all of these sincere efforts and endeavors undertaken by international parties were repeatedly wrecked by the positions of the Israeli government, which quickly dashed the hopes raised by the launch of negotiations last September.

The core issue here is that the Israeli government refuses to commit to terms of reference for the negotiations that are based on international law and United Nations resolutions, and that it frantically continues to intensify building of settlements on the territory of the State of Palestine.

Ah. Here we go. Whine, whine, whine, settlements, whine, whine. And yet, here is the biggest lie of all: Palestinian unity.

When division struck the unity of our homeland, people and institutions, we were determined to adopt dialogue for restoration of our unity. We succeeded months ago in achieving national reconciliation and we hope that its implementation will be accelerated in the coming weeks. The core pillar of this reconciliation was to turn to the people through legislative and presidential elections within a year, because the State we want will be a State characterized by the rule of law, democratic exercise and protection of the freedoms and equality of all citizens without any discrimination and the transfer of power through the ballot box.

Really, I’m surprised his nose didn’t grow sixty or seventy inches while giving this speech, as there is almost no truth whatsoever in it. Even the AP noticed something was off.

The speech papered over any Palestinian culpability for the negotiations stalemate, deadly violence against Israel, spurned peace offers and the internal rift that has produced dueling governments in the West Bank and Gaza. It also ignored Jewish links to the Holy Land.

That’s an astonishing admission of guilt for the AP. Don’t count on that graf staying that way for long.

And so, Palestine Day at the UN is now concluded. If you need a palate cleanser, here’s Bibi’s speech.

Friday briefs

Say pretty please with sugar on top: Oh, well, then of course, Israel must do so. Islamic nations are demanding that Israel open its nuke plant to IAEA inspectors. Well, I demand that Islamic nations STFU on telling Israel what to do until after every single member of the OIC has full diplomatic relations with the Jewish state. And stops funding terrorism. Both, by the way, are extremely reasonable requests of civilized nations. And yet, I think I will not live to see my demands fulfilled.

And yet, China has huge trade ties with Iran A visiting scholar from China says it won’t stop Israel if it decides to attack Iran. I’m thinking he’s not representing official policy, and Ha’aretz is expressing wishful thinking, or something. Plus, I think the time that Israel could have attacked Iranian nukes is past. It’s a moot point.

Jimmy Carter, Walt Mearsheimer hardest hit: Say, guys who think Israel should negotiate with Hamas, the U.S. just designated another member of Hamas a wanted terrorist. This one has ties with Iran.

Our enemies, our allies: The Pakistani ISI was behind attacks on U.S. troops in Afghanistan. And yet, we will still give them billions of dollars in aid. Our priorities are messed up. Then again, the Iranians and Syrians acted with impunity, murdering hundreds of our soldiers in Iraq, so what should we expect?

Wait, wait, I know the answer to this one: Can young Jews become more Jewish without much Judaism?

No.

Happy Fictional Statelet of East Palestine Day!

The inexorable theater of granting a ceremonial state to the people who utterly refuse to negotiate or compromise with Israel is lurching to a close. The AP analysis is all aw-shucks, that guy is working hard for his state, isn’t he? I won’t bother going over to rags like al-Guardian, whose writers and editors are simply wetting themselves with glee over current events. But here’s a fun part of the AP analysis:

If the Palestinians suspect foot-dragging in the Security Council, they will consider their options, Abbas advisers said. This might include going to the General Assembly or dissolving the Palestinian Authority, the self-rule government established in the mid-1990s as part of interim agreements with Israel

Dissolving the Palestinian Authority and effectively stepping down has been Abbas’ doomsday weapon. It would spell the collapse of two decades of U.S. policy in the region and would force Israel, as occupying power, to assume responsibility for nearly 4 million Palestinians, a costly task now largely funded by the international community.

“Handing the keys to the Israeli side has become a very realistic option,” said Azzam Ahmed, a leader of Abbas’ Fatah movement.

What? Break up the PA and give up all those billions of international dollars that the kleptocracy has been skimming these past forty-plus years? Give up the fancy villas, the imported cars, the Swiss bank accounts? Really? Karen Laub, are you that naive, or is it your job to repeat the lies of the Palestinians uncritically? (Whoops, just answered my own question there.)

By the way, as I mentioned yesterday, look at this description of Netanyahu, the man who is willing to negotiate with the Palestinians:

Netanyahu – a longtime hard-liner who reluctantly accepted the idea of a Palestinian state last year – called again this week for direct talks. However, he has rejected the Palestinian demand that all settlement construction be halted while talks on the future of the territories are held. Netanyahu has also said Israel will keep east Jerusalem and significant chunks of the West Bank, citing concerns that any territory Israel relinquishes might be used to launch attacks on the Jewish state.

Compare that with this description—in the lead—of Abbas:

The drama over the Palestinians’ bid for U.N. recognition is still unfolding, but President Mahmoud Abbas appears to have won new respect at home for standing up to the United States and moving their decades-long quest for statehood back to the center of the world stage.

The narrative. Yeah, we got that.

The appalling double standards on Israel and the Palestinians

This is why there will never be peace. Mahmoud Abbas quite plainly is insisting on never, ever budging an inch on Palestinian demands.

No to acknowledging Israel as a Jewish state. No to resettling refugees within “Palestine.” No to land exchanges. No to everything except a return to the 1949 Armistice lines and the flooding of Israel with millions of the descendants of Palestinian refugees.

And the media call Netanyahu the intransigent one. This, in spite of Netanyahu’s repeated calls to talk with Abbas directly. And Abbas’ repeated insistence on preconditions for any talks.

When you read the reports of Abbas refusing all alternatives to unilaterally declaring a state, notice what is missing. The words that described Netanyahu, for instance. Where is “defiant”? Do a google search on the words netanyahu + defiant. Look what comes back:

Binyamin Netanyahu defiant ahead of meeting with Barack Obama …

Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu defiant on 1967 borders

Defiant Netanyahu to Outline Peace Plan (they changed the headline to “Israeli Prime Minister” but the page title remains “Defiant”)

The double standard on Israel is particularly galling these days, as Mahmoud Abbas slams the Obama administration on a daily basis with no penalty, the PA says that Obama will be responsible if their bid to unilaterally declare a state explodes in their faces, and Hamas is giggling in the background, waiting for this all to blow up so they can try to move forward in the West Bank.

Another word missing: “Demand.” Abbas is making demands, and the media are not even labeling them as such. He is demanding a state without negotiated borders, without having had elections in years, without having control over the western portion of the would-be state of Palestine, and without having an economy in place that would be substituted for the economy of handouts that the Palestinians have lived on these past sixty-plus years. About the only place I’ve found “demand” linked with Abbas is on Fox News.

This is what the AP musters as description of Abbas’ intransigence. Note the headline, which is as evenhanded as possible:

Palestinians undeterred in UN statehood bid

Note the choice of word: “undeterred”. Not “defiant”. Not “intransigent”. Not “stubborn” or “stiff-necked”. No, those are all descriptions of the other side. The Palestinians? They’re just a bunch of reasonable guys trying to get their state off the ground, in spite of big bad Israel’s attempts to stop them.

Obama and Abbas met for more than 45 minutes Wednesday evening. The White House wouldn’t say whether Obama directly asked the Palestinian leader to abandon his plans to pursue full U.N. membership, saying only that he reiterated his opposition to the statehood bid and the U.S. intention to issue a veto.

Let us remember that Hillary Clinton harangued Benjamin Netanyahu for 45 minutes after a municipal official pushed through paperwork as usual for new housing in Jerusalem apartments. The details of that harangue were leaked to the media. Here, nothing is leaked, nothing is admitted, nothing is said.

So far there was no indication that Abbas was ready for compromise despite intense pressure, but his aides said they were not setting deadlines for the Security Council to consider the application. And they left the door open for a Plan-B request to the General Assembly for an upgrade of their current status as a permanent observer to a nonmember observer state.

What a reasonable guy! He left the door open. He’s not ignoring the president of the United States, the most powerful man in the world. He’s not refusing to help Obama on this issue. He’s leaving the door open! But wait, there’s more!

Saeb Erekat, another senior aide, echoed that sentiment, saying the pursuit of U.N. membership would not be slowed: “We will not allow any political maneuvering on this issue,” he said

That persistence has put the Palestinians on a collision course with the United States and Israel. A frustrated President Barack Obama told world leaders during his Wednesday U.N. speech that “there are no shortcuts” to peace.

They’re simply mocking Obama now. And why not? Obama has given them no reason to fear him. But remember this, the next time Obama or his people go after Israel. Of course, that won’t be until after the 2012 elections, because Obama has discovered that there are limits to how far he can bully the Jewish state before American Jews stop donating to the cause.

In the meantime, the press, the EU, and the Obama administration give the Palestinians a pass. Every so often, I think that if only Israel had better PR, if only Israel put forth its case in a better way, things would be different. And then events overshadow my thinking. Because Israel is, quite literally, the Jew of the world. And the world has never been a friendly place for the Jews.

That’s the other reason the Palestinian push for statehood has become inexorable. The few moments of guilt for the Holocaust passed a long time ago. The world has returned to its reflexive attitude toward Jews. The world does not like us. So of course, it takes the part of the Palestinians, because they’re not Jews. Even better, they hate the Jews, and are trying to destroy the Jewish state. It’s a win-win for the world’s Jew haters.

The thing is, we’re not going anywhere. Deal with it.

They Shout “Justice” but There is No Justice

I have spoken to more people about potential Palestinian action in the United Nations over the past month than I can remember. Some argue for the United States to take the UN to the woodshed and teach it a lesson. Some want to take the US government to the woodshed. Some want to take the Palestinians or the Netanyahu government to the woodshed. Peace? Security? No, the woodshed seems to be the topic of choice.

People are frustrated. Jews, liberal Christians, Christian Zionists, Muslims and people who couldn’t care about religion at all: all of them have an opinion about who should be beaten about the head right now. Even the pacifists seem to be ready to come to blows.

The left, those on the left who pay some lip-service to caring about Israel at least, say that they only want “justice” for the Palestinians. But justice requires more than more votes in the United Nations, justice requires more than threats of boycotts, or threats of violence. Justice requires caring about the other’s well-being, Israel’s well-being. Justice is defined as “the quality of being fair and reasonable.” There is nothing reasonable about refusing to negotiate and refusing to compromise where necessary.

They shout “Justice!” but there is no justice in this.

Instead as I wrote for We Are For Israel, they are demanding an affirmation of Khartoum, “No negotiations. No recognition. No peace.” Hopefully sanity and not enmity will prevail, but I’m not holding my breath.

Wednesday in briefs

Feminists for Palestinians: Working against their own interests. Israel just graduated its first female bomb specialist. And by “bomb specialist,” I mean the non-terrorist version of that job: One who disarms bombs instead of builds them. Compare Inbal Gawi to Latifa Abu Hmeid, who led the procession for Palestinian statehood last week. She is the mother of four terrorists murderers—another version of a “bomb specialist.” And that, in a nutshell, explains why I write “better than you” on some of my posts. I’ll take one Gawi over a thousands Hmeids. Anytime.

The Obama Muslim Outreach strikes again! Obama talked to Turkey’s prime minister Erdogan on Tuesday about the deteriorated relations between Turkey and Israel.

“The president underscored his interest in seeing a resolution of that issue between those two countries and encouraged continuing work toward that end,” White House adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall told reporters after the meeting, saying Obama also emphasized the need to calm tensions throughout the region.

So, how’s that working out for Israel?

Turkish PM calls Cyprus, Israel drilling “madness”
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan described offshore gas drilling by estranged ally Israel and Cyprus as “madness” on Wednesday, raising the stakes in a confrontation over potentially huge deposits in the eastern Mediterranean.

And the Obama touch in the world continues. It’s kind of like the Midas touch, only in reverse. There’s nothing like electing a senator with no foreign policy experience (but he gave a speech in Europe once!). You just can’t beat the way he gets the world to bide by the American lines. Sorta like how the Palestinians aren’t pushing unilaterally for a state this week. Oh. Wait.

Ransom paid: The American idiots who thought hiking in Iraq was a good thing to do, and accidentally went over (or were pulled over by the Iranians) the border to Iran, are being freed today. Several reason occur: The ransom was paid (half a million each), and Mad Mahmoud’s people got the photo op it wanted. Now Mad Mahmoud can go to the UN and tell the world what a kind, generous Jew-hater he is.

Late Tuesday roundup

Long day in NorVA today, so these are late.

The Palestinian state will not be denied: Mahmoud Abbas is making Obama and the EU his bitches, pushing forward with his plan to unilaterally declare the fictional statelet of East Palestine. Meanwhile, in the fictional statelet of West Palestine (a.k.a. the Gaza Strip), Hamas has clearly stated that they’re not on board with the state-declaring. Why? Because all of “historical Palestine” (a.k.a. Israel) is what they want declared. And “historic Palestine” is an utter lie.

Turkey threatens U.S. company over Cyprus; no harangue yet from Hillary: So, you think this one is going to get any action? Noble Energy is the Houston-based company that’s been all over the eastern Med finding gas fields for countries. Turkey is threatening Cyprus. Cyprus is using Noble energy. It’s an accident waiting to happen. And there is nothing but silence from NATO, the EU, the UN, and the U.S. about Turkey’s belligerency. No surprise there. They don’t censure Mad Mahmoud when he spouts anti-Semitism at the UN, either.

The CSM whitewashes Hamas—again. Really, is anyone surprised by this? The story first claims that Hamas is “split” over whether or not to support Abbas’ bid for a state. See above for a four-day-old story that utterly contradicts that claim. And as you wend your way through the story, which says Hamas merely, ah, “took over” from Fatah in Gaza, you do not find a single Hamas spokesman who goes on record saying Hamas should approve the bid. In fact, the only people the CSM can find to support the bid are all—wait for it—analysts. Way to go, CSM! Your anti-Israel cred is safe.

Monday blah briefs

Israel Derangement Syndrome strikes again: A bunch of Turks decided to hack into Israeli websites and leave anti-Israel (and anti-Armenia and anti-Greece) messages. Except they’re so effing stupid, they hacked Palestinian websites. Apparently, these eyleet hak0rz d00dz didn’t notice the .ps extension. Brilliant work, guys! Thanks for the laugh!

Yes, they’d totally have dinner with Hitler: Columbia is hosting Mad Mahmoud again, and making no apologies for it. They’re even hosting a dinner for him with some of the students. I’d go, if I could bring my .38. Or at least an aluminum baseball bat.

Shut up, they replied: The UN has banned UN Watch from attending Durban III. Why? Because they can’t stand the truth, that’s why. Time to cut our dues to the UN.

Astroturfing the anti-Israel riots? Al-Ahram says that the Egyptians who rioted at the Israeli embassay were paid by a wealthy Egyptian to do it. This isn’t passing my smell test. I need to see more information on it. It’s awfully convenient for the government to blame someone for the riot, instead of general anti-Israel hatred that has been fomented these past sixty-plus years—by the government. Chickens, roosting, etc.

Why the Palestinian UN debacle is all Obama’s fault: I’m not arguing. Read it all.

Barry Rubin defends a Democrat: If you’ve read that statement by Henry Waxman about Jews voting against Obama “to protect their wealth,” then read Barry’s defense of Waxman. The statement was taken out of context. But it still sucked, and Barry tells you why.

Sunday quick links

And we can prove it, too: Benjamin Netanyahu will remind the UN that Jews have been in Israel for thousands of years.

I knew there was something I didn’t like about IKEA to begin with: The founder was a Nazi. Yeah, your furniture sucks, too.

How’m I doing? Ed Koch warns Obama he’s going to stay on his case about Israel. Awesome, Mr. Mayor. Go get ‘im.

Cutting off its nose: Awesome. Turkey is going to freeze ties with the EU if Cyprus gains the rotating presidency. Go, Cyprus!

Do you get the feeling that Turkey will never become a member of the EU? Yeah, me too.

I don’t even want to fisk it: Tom Friedman’s latest column on Israel, where he blames pretty much everything on Netanyahu, even after saying it’s not Israel’s fault that Egypt is imploding and Erdogan is scapegoating and demagoguing Israel. Seriously, does his editor ever say to him, “Uh, Tom, you just contradicted your main points there”?

Obviously not.

Friday briefs

A good thing happened, for a change: Thank you, Jordanians, for being the sane Israeli neighbors. The call to replicate the Egyptian violation of international law and centuries-old treaties by protesting in front of (and attacking, of course) the Israeli embassy drew only a few hundred. Apparently, the average Jordanian has better things to do than fight with security forces. Also, Jordan respects the laws and had a strong security presence in advance of the “protest”. Here’s hoping the forces of Islamism are weak there, because the last thing Israel needs is a war on all fronts.

About effing time: The U.K. finally amended the law that enables any idiot to put out an arrest warrant for anyone in the world, and yet, that action seems to be nearly exclusively used to file arrest warrants against Israelis. Why is that, we wonder? (Can you say, “Jew-hatred”? We knew you could.) The U.K. ambassador insists five other countries had people with arrest warrants taken out on them. Really? Name them. Besides Tzipi Livni, they charged Emir Peretz, Moshe Yaalon, Ehud Barak, and General Doron Almog, forcing the last to stay on his plane at Heathrow in order to avoid arrest. Really, dude, name the other five people charged, because I’m calling bullshit on you.

More tough talk from Turkey: Once again, a NATO member is threatening a fellow NATO member’s ally. Time for Barack Obama to prove he can threaten someone besides the ruling council of Egypt. Really, why isn’t our Secretary of State responding to the threats continuously being made by Turkey against Israel?

And yet, there are no leaks of 45-minute dressing-downs by the Secretary of State: The Palestinians are openly defying the Obama Administration. The AP is actually writing that the Palestinians are openly defying the U.S. But since it isn’t about a long-planned release of tenders for a suburb of Jerusalem being released during at vice-presidential visit, apparently, it doesn’t rate very high on the Obama Outrage Scale. And by “openly defying,” we mean, “OPENLY DEFYING.”

In a direct challenge to the United States, the Palestinians said Thursday they will ask the Security Council next week to accept them as a full member of the United Nations, even though Washington has promised to veto the measure.

Really, you can’t get much more defiant than that. So what’s the Obama Administration doing? Scrambling. Double standards? You betcha!

Just in case you thought Mad Mahmoud wasn’t an antisemitic effer

Here’s what he told the WaPo the other day:

Why do you insist on constantly denouncing Israel and make such provocative statements if you want to work with the West?

If somebody condemns aggression, occupation — is that bad? And the Zionist regime is always doing the same thing. They destroy people’s homes and raze them to the ground. They have created a few major wars. They continue to assassinate and terrorize people; they continue their policy of coercion against other nations, including Iran. I think an important question that must be answered is, why do all U.S. administrations always support the Zionist regime? The United States is 10,000 kilometers away from Palestine, and other nations in the region are against the Zionists, but the United States and its allies in Europe continue to support the Zionist regime. Why? What is the relationship between these two countries? The United States has a population of 300 million and the whole population is going to be sacrificed for the interests of a few hundred Zionists. A dreadful party, a feared party, the party that was behind the First World War and the Second World War. Whenever there is a conflict or war — this party is behind it. The same party that made a grim picture of the United States in the world. Are the 300 million in the United States Zionists? Have you ever had a referendum in the United States that the people support the Zionist regime? Never. I think you should have a referendum in the United States to see if the people want to use their resources and taxes for a number of killers. We are against killing and massacres. We are against occupation. How do you feel about the upcoming debate at the U.N. over the creation of the Palestinian state? Do you favor the creation of the Palestinian state?

I hope that will happen very soon and that can be the beginning point. That should be the beginning of the liberation of the entire Palestinian land. The Palestinian nation existed before the Palestinians had unwanted guests pour into Palestine with guns.

Say, Juan Cole, tells us again how he really doesn’t hate Jews. Just Zionists. You know, the ones that started both world wars.

News I can woo!

I had a bone density scan done this morning, because my mother suffers from very bad osteoperosis.

I do not have it.

That is SUCH a relief. Bad enough I have her arthritis (and it’s in the lower three discs of my spine). At least I don’t have that part of her genes.
