Sunday morning briefs

Seriously? I mean, SERIOUSLY? Ynet is quoting Richard Silverstein, the insanely anti-Israel anti-Zionist blogger who hates all Jews who don’t want to take part in their own destruction? How much of an anti-Israel guy is this? So much so that I’m pretty sure I’ve never linked to him, will never link to him, and have never so much as bothered commenting about him before, other than to point out what a wretched, anti-Israel Jew he is. He needs to tikkun himself, never mind olam. Shyeah. The Mossad did it. So, if the Mossad is that powerful, why is it Iran keeps marching forward towards nukes?

Sarkozy is dancing as fast as he can: Days after calling Netanyahu a liar, he’s signing his notes “With friendship.” That’ll work. It’s not like Bibi will hold it against him or anything. Of course, the French will think it’s tres magnifique! Extra credit awesomeness: France’s ambassador to Israel’s is a Bigot. No, really. His name is Israel Christophe Bigot. I love it when I can’t make this stuff up.

This is why neo-Nazis aren’t very successful: The police are lifting fingerprints and DNA from 27 beer bottles left at the scene of a horrific anti-Semitic attack in Brooklyn the day after the anniversary of Kristallnacht. The anti-semitic bastards, taking a cue from their fellow anti-Semites in Europe, torched three cars and wrote anti-Semitic graffiti in one of the most Jewish neighborhoods in the country. And yet, they’re going to be caught fairly simply, because like all of their neo-Nazi brethren, they’re stupid. Leaving abundant numbers of fingerprints at the scene of the crime? Priceless.

Speaking of stupid: I don’t read the gossip mags much, but I have caught wind of this story. Some woman is claiming that Justin Bieber is her baby daddy. He denies ever having really met her. The awesomely stupid part of this story? If she really did have sex with him, as she says she did, she could be liable for rape charges. He was a minor at the time of the alleged tryst. (FWIW, I believe Bieber. The kid is all right in my eyes.)

Occupy death count: Three and rising. Close down the Obamavilles. They’re pits of festering filth, drug overdoses, and now murders. Yeah, they’re just like the Tea Party. Lice outbreaks, tuberculosis outbreaks, sexual assaults, regular assaults–yep, just like the Tea Party protests. And how much are they costing America’s cities? Millions. the double standard lives in Zucotti Park (and every Obamaville in America). FYI, our pathetic Occupy Richmonders were last seen trying to occupy the Canal Walk, a tourish area along the James that Richmond spent millions on several years ago. They’re talking about camping out in the mayor’s neighborhood. Don’t worry, the police will throw them out of there, too. Richmond isn’t like other cities. Then again, the editor of the Richmond Free Press apparently lives next door to the mayor. Hilarity may yet ensue, as he’s offered the occupier kiddies his backyard.

Lazy Bar Mitzvah weekend post

Another bar mitzvah today. Nate did quite well, and I’m heading off to the party in a little while, where I may actually play Laser Tag and ride a go-kart. We’ll see.

His friends all decided to choose the row behind me this morning. I was standing on the end of my pew, and I watched them file in, and then said, “Boys, you don’t want to sit there. I really enjoy my worship. I am so going to turn around and glare at you when you start whispering…”

They all paused for a moment, then they stood up in unison and trooped over to the next section of pews.

Heh.

I spoke to a few of them at the Oneg and explained that I wasn’t really mean, but I really did like worshipping without distractions. One of them said they were happy that I told them beforehand, because it cut down on problems later. Double heh.

Veterans Day

You don’t stop to think much about it unless you’re in the service, really. My father and two uncles were veterans–WWII and Korea. My nephew is a Marine now, learning his trade before they send him to Afghanistan sometime in 2012.

I work with veterans on a daily basis, as my company’s executive staff is led by a veteran, two of my three bosses are veterans (and Marines, no less!), and a significant percentage of our employees are veterans. My synagogue is close to an army base, and we get soldiers from time to time (not necessarily Jewish; we’re happy to have any soldier visit us for a few hours off base and a nice little snack). All of these people have something that I never could reach, myself. I looked into ROTC during my sophomore year in college and decided that I didn’t have what it takes to join the army. I did, however, have the respect that many of my generation never had for the military. I grew up watching the end of the Vietnam war, but I could not comprehend the scumbags who spit on returning vets and booed them in airports. My cousin’s first husband was a Vietnam vet. He flew a COBRA over there for six months. The life-expectancy of a COBRA pilot was thirty days. I asked him (I was very young) if his service affected him after he got back home. He said that he couldn’t stand Chinese food anymore, but that was it.

Some of you may watch Dancing With the Stars. There’s a veteran on it now, J.R. Martinez, who was on All My Children. He was badly burned in Iraq after driving over a land mine in his Humvee. The cost of that war is more than most of us realize, since most of us calculate it only through the tax dollars spent over there (a pretty crappy way to tally it, anti-war protestors and Ron Paul). It’s a cost I pray that my nephew doesn’t ever pay. He and his compatriots are doing so much more for this country than the selfish, self-centered little twits at the Occupy encampments all over the country. There really is no comparison, although one has to note that those in uniform never brag about what they’re doing for our country, and those in the Occupy encampments can’t shut up about how much they’re doing to change our nation. And yet, our nation continues on, unchanged, except for being a little dirtier and smellier in many downtown areas.

So, to all of you veterans who read this blog, and to the ones that don’t: Thank you for your service. It is appreciated by many more people than you know.

11-11-11 briefs

Today is Veterans Day, and nephew Nate’s birthday, which he is celebrating by leading services today and tomorrow in honor of his becoming a bar mitzvah. Woots all around!

The Obama doctrine strikes again: Dividends of Libyan chaos? SAMs in Gaza, and Israel equipping its civilian airliners with missile defenses, at a cost of over a million bucks per plane. Let me repeat that: Israel is equipping its civilian airliners with missile defenses. And Israel is the nation that is vilified, not the terrorists in Gaza and the terrortories [sic] who try to murder civilians.

The price of ignoring the rules: UNESCO is cutting back on services and asking member states to pay 2012 dues faster to make up for losing U.S., Canadian, and Israeli dollars. All together now: Awwwww. This is the organization that is declaring Jewish sites part of the “Palestinian” heritage. Yeah, I’m so sad that we’re not spending our tax dollars there anymore.

But the Arab press can keep on publishing anti-Semitic cartoons, as usual: You know, UN bureacrats are even dumber than you thought they were. UNESCO has filed a complaint against Israel over a cartoon in Ha’aretz that depicted Netanyahu ordering the bombing of UNESCO offices after hitting Iran. And why are they dumber than we could possibly believe? Because the cartoon was a knock on Netanyahu by Ha’aretz.

Falt told Barkan the cartoon constituted incitement.

“A cartoon like this endangers the lives of unarmed diplomats, and you have an obligation to protect them,” Falt said, according to an Israeli source. “We understand that there is freedom of the press in Israel, but the government must prevent attacks on UNESCO.”

Funny how they can’t seem to find any incitement in Palestinian cartoons.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know: Time for another “OMG! 30,000 people signed up to be suicide bombers against Israel!” story. Total number of people who have actually carried through an attack after signing up: Zero. Shaking in our boots, we are.

Happy birthday, US Marine Corps

My nephew joined this year. Happy birthday, USMC!

The Marine Corps celebrates another birthday

Four Marines stand ready to escort a birthday cake during the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point 236th Marine Corps Birthday Cake-cutting Ceremony and Historical Uniform Pageant in front of the Christian F. Schilt building Nov. 8. As part of the Marine Corps tradition, the cake was cut and the first piece went to the oldest Marine present and the next one was given to the youngest Marine.

Shame at Penn State: Football uber alles

Several thousand Penn State students rioted last night over the firing of long-time football coach Joe Paterno.

Thousands of enraged Penn State students tore through the streets of State College, Pa., overnight to protest the firing of Joe Paterno after the longtime head football coach was removed from his position effective immediately.

Amid chants of “We want JoePa,” “One more game” and “F*** the media!,” rioting students flipped over a television van, knocked a lamppost onto a car, threw toilet tissue and rocks at police and set off fireworks.

Police met the rioting crowds with tear gas as it became clear that the army of officers, who were out in riot gear, were far outnumbered by students. Every local police department in the county contributed officers to the effort to control the crowd, along with state police and the county sheriff’s department.

You would think that the students would be fine with the man being fired. He wasn’t fired because his team is losing. He wasn’t fired arbitrarily or because yesterday was Wednesday.

He was fired for his role in covering up one of his coaches sexual attacks on minor boys in the Penn State locker room, as was the president of the college and two other administrators who did nothing. They have yet to fire Mike McQeary, who reported the attack, and then accepted a full-time position with Penn State afterward while nobody reported the crime to the police. And lest you think that it was not a crime, the child was ten years old, and the then 28-year-old graduate assistant saw Jerry Sandusky raping the boy in the shower. He did not stop the attack. He did not call the police. He told his father. Because after all, it’s far more important not to impugn the reputation of a famous football coach even after you’ve seen him raping a ten-year-old boy.

Prosecutors allege the administrators ignored a 2002 report from a graduate assistant — identified by sources as Mike McQueary — that he saw Sandusky having sex with a young boy in a shower.

McQueary, now an assistant coach for the Nittany Lions football team, went to his father first, then to coach Joe Paterno.

Here’s hoping that he gets fired, too. In nine years, Sandusky attacked even more children.

The three-year investigation eventually ended with a grand jury finding that Sandusky had eight victims — two of them had long-term relationships with Sandusky and six involved shared showers in Lasch Building at Penn State, which houses the football program.

That’s why Paterno was fired. You can say he followed the letter of the law, perhaps. I don’t know the laws about not reporting a child rape. But by not following through, by not speaking out when he knew that Sandusky was still free, and still involved in the charity that brought him into contact with underprivileged children–his victims–Paterno failed in a moral and ethical sense.

The selfish children who rioted last night remind me of their compatriots camping out in cities throughout the country who are covering up sex attacks in their midst because it makes the Occupy movement look bad. But for thousands of students to ignore the fact that children were raped–that’s despicable. Their behavior is disgusting. They should be ashamed of themselves.

The saddest thing about all of this? They’re not.

The busy Wednesday briefs

Isn’t this that mixing of Church and State that liberals hate so much? Seriously? The Obama administration is creating a tax on Christmas trees to fund a new department that will–determine how to better market Christmas trees. Because, you know, it’s not like you can get a Christmas tree anywhere. Oh. Wait. Yes, that Obama–the man who actually said there is less regulation under his administration than any other recent presidency.

All together now: Awwwwww. The Palestinians are giving up on getting their state by fiat through the UN Security Council. So now, will they come back to the negotiating table? Oh, please. Like that’s gonna happen anytime soon. There have been zero penalties for not negotiating, so why would they?

It’s official: The IEAE says Iran is working for nukes. Gee. I’m shocked, shocked to discover that it’s true. (Say, wasn’t Juan Cole insisting that Israel was making shit up so they could bomb Iran or something?) Of course Iran is doubling down, because its sponsors, China and Russia, are protecting it.

Check his foreign bank accounts: Israel is calling Mohammed el Baradei, the man who did the most to cover up the Iranian quest for nuclear weapons, an Iranian agent. I’m not disagreeing with that.

And because I have a category for Turkey on my Google News page: Well, here’s a story on turkeys. In Staten Island. Grouchy ones. Yep, it’s that time of year, when turkey stories outweight the turkeys in Turkey.

Obama, Sarkozy, and Bibi

My own take. It is problematic that the media chose to keep this secret or frankly that they were asked to do so. That said, let me offer what I think would be the pro-Obama angle on this conversation just for the sake of it, since no one else is likely to try to do it. This conversation is damaging as a whole so Obama advocates in general are likely to avoid trying. So here it goes:

Obama challenges Sarkozy about France’s disregarding of the US on the UNESCO issue. One could even argue that Obama was upset about France’s abandonment of Israel on this for which the US was advocating, but that might be going a bit far here. [Supporters will see a strong pro-Israel intent here by Obama]. The conversation leads to Netanyahu. This is interesting because there could well then be linkage between Sarkozy’s decision to vote for statehood in UNESCO, to abandon support for Israel, and to disregard the US. That personal dislike could have that impact on Sarkozy would be a major indictment of his character in and of itself. Sarkozy calls Netanyahu a “liar.” What did he lie about? I am wondering here. Anyway this leads to Obama.

Now with the leader of France being attacked by Obama for not supporting the US and EU stance and launching a tirade about Bibi as a liar, Obama’s response is not “You bet. He’s lied out his you know what!” Nor is it “I can’t stand the man. He is awful!” Instead, Obama actually deflected the conversation in an attempt to create camaraderie with Sarkozy, or to avoid an argument, while playing DOWN the situation. By saying he has to deal with Bibi every day, Obama ended the conversation.

Considering the fact that we already know that there have been a number of heated exchanges over the past couple of years between Obama and Bibi, Obama’s response to Sarkozy was highly restrained, in fact frankly surprisingly so. While Obama would not have said what he did in public, what he did say is a far cry from the sentiments that many ascribe to him and would have expected to hear from him under these circumstances.

Meanwhile, there are plenty of people who each of us like very well to whom we might refer at times as a pain in the ass, and certainly might in response to others who are very angry at those people. I think that Obama supporters will see Obama’s response as nothing more than that, essentially calling Netanyahu a pain in the butt. In fact, one could argue that no few of Netanyahu’s political opponents in Israel would say similar things about him or much worse. Sarkozy’s comments on the other hand are not acceptable at all and were clearly much more hostile and even slanderous.

On the whole, I think that people who dislike Obama will play this situation up, while those who support Obama will have an easy time maintaining that support. Sarkozy has some explaining to do. I think that this conversation will have little or no impact on swaying the opinions of those who support the President and consider him a friend of Israel.

Tuesday briefs

You know, it isn’t a biased story if it’s true: The AP is covering Israel’s Haredi problems with women. It’s shameful. Women have been beaten, spit on, forced to the back of buses, and insulted. And the men doing it aren’t Islamists. They’re Jews. The mayor of Jerusalem just fired a city councilwoman for bringing a lawsuit contesting gender segregation. Once again: Shame.

News flash: Obama and Sarkozy don’t like Bibi. Seriously? No! Really? I had no idea. Actually, Allahpundit has the bigger story: Which American reporters were there, and signed a confidentiality agreement to cover up the slams by Obama after they were made, not before? It’s more proof that our media are totally in the tank for Obama, but since I have a theme going here: Shame on them.

So, no penalties for the Palestinians–again: The tax transfers are back. The $200 million from the U.S. is unfrozen. Okay, the UNESCO payment freeze is still on, but the Palestinians pay nothing for doing an end run around peace negotiations. Way to go, world. Shame.

This is why there will be no bombing of Iran: Oil is nearing $100/barrel again. And apparently, even putting really strong sanctions on Iran’s central bank will force the price of oil higher. Dear wily Jew who is going to develop the alternate energy source that will end the Middle East’s stranglehold on oil: Faster, please.

Monday I got up an hour early briefs

Doesn’t matter that the clocks changed, my body clock got me up an hour early. So off to the gym I went.

More Palestinian attacks on Israel, now, with less media bias! The AP is on a roll, presenting the facts, and just the facts, and no bias for the second time in a few days. Whoa. Does this mean the beginning of a beautiful friendship? (No, I don’t think so either, but it’s nice to see the balance for a change.) Isn’t it amazing what happens when stringers stop repeating the “they were innocent farmers working in their fields” lie? Although, thinking about it, the Palestinians aren’t even trying to hide that they’re constantly attacking Israel anymore. Why should they? The world has consistently attacked Israel and defended the Palestinians whether they lied or not.

But really, it’s not urgent: The IAEA is going to report that Iran is just around the corner from attaining nuclear bombs, but the Russians think that it’s silly to rush to sanctions in order to try to stop them. The Russians, of course, are the ones who are supplying the expertise to get those nuclear bombs. Because the Russians think they can control them? Really? Chechnya, anyone? So when the bomb goes off in Moscow, will there be anyone left in the Politburo to tell “I told you so”?

How out of touch is Ron Paul? This out of touch.

In the cradle of democracy, democracy is dead: The prime minister of Greece was essentially fired for wanting to allow his people to vote on a referendum about the EU plan to bail out Greece. Mind you, I have no sympathy for a populace that thinks it’s their God-given right to retire at age 52, and they’ve done it all to themselves–but the irony is so thick you can cut it with a broadsword. Democracy in the EU? No. Oligarchy? You betcha! Rule of the elites, for the elites, and the masses can eat cake.

The real strength behind the UNESCO win: Now the Palestinians will be suing Israel in international courts, this time via UNESCO. It’s all part of the delegitimization strategy. You would think that it wouldn’t work, but then, you wouldn’t have been reading this blog for the past nine years.

Getting the story straight in two media outlets

Credit where it’s due: The AP and VOA are getting the story straight on Israel, at least this weekend.

They got the headlines right.

AP:

Israeli airstrike kills Palestinian militant

VOA:

Israeli Air Strike in Gaza Kills Palestinian Militant

They got the facts right.

AP:

An Israeli airstrike in the Gaza Strip has killed an Islamic Jihad militant and wounded three others as they were preparing to fire rockets into southern Israel.

VOA:

Israel has carried out an air strike in the Gaza Strip against militants as they were preparing to fire rockets into Israel.

And they got the backstory right.

AP:

Islamic Jihad says the men were members of the group, which also fired rockets into Israel a week earlier, killing one civilian and injuring others. That rocket attack also triggered Israeli strikes that killed several militants.

VOA:

The militant group fired about 20 rockets into Israel a week earlier, killing one Israeli civilian and wounding several others. That rocket attack triggered Israeli strikes into Gaza that killed nine Islamic Jihad members.

That’s all I’ve been asking for: Print the truth. Stop whitewashing Palestinian crimes against Israel, and stop demonizing the Israelis for their responses.

We’ll see how long this lasts.

Did you set your clocks back last night?

I’m going to take a wild guess that it’s Daylight Savings Time, because my DVR and computers all say it’s 7:19, while all of my clocks say it’s 8:19.

I’m so out of touch these days. No wonder it was still dark at 7 a.m.

OMG! Israel’s going to attack Iran! And so’s the U.K.!

Told you they were blowing smoke.

In fact, this story is full of holes.

First, Israel has decided not to attack Iran–a point I’m making due both to direct knowledge and direct statements, a few of them made publicly, by those involved in the debate. The reasons for this decision make sense but I won’t list them here to save your time.

Second, there is no new development to prompt such an attack. On the contrary, all of the reports have been about the slow pace of Iranian progress toward obtaining deliverable nuclear weapons. There is no urgency in such an operation.

Third, all the reasons for not attacking Iran are stronger than ever. Israel can expect little international support, the moves toward radicalism in Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Tunisia, and Turkey (plus a heightened risk-taking by a shaky Syrian regime) make the environment for such an attack far more dangerous for Israel than a year or two ago. And again there is no vital incentive for launching such an attack.

Jackson Diehl says so, too.

In reality, Israel is unlikely to launch any attack without the support of the United States, which could easily be drawn into the regional conflict an air strike would trigger. Like the Israeli military establishment, the Pentagon opposes any such venture — and it’s hard to imagine President Obama signing on. If he acts in the coming weeks or months, Netanyahu would risk a rupture in the alliance that is the ultimate guarantor of Israeli security.

The new burst of speculation, like those before it, does serve a couple of purposes for Israel, however. It refocuses attention on the Iranian threat, and takes it away from the Palestinian bid for statehood at the United Nations; it raises the pressure on the United States and its allies to increase sanctions and other nonmilitary pressure on Tehran.

I can’t see Obama signing on for this, either.

So there you have it, it’s unanimous. The Guardian’s story was effing unbelievable, right down to the “Israel controls the U.S.” bullshit:

Washington has been warned by Israel against leaving any military action until it is too late.

Western intelligence agencies say Israel will demand that the US act if it believes its own military cannot launch successful attacks to stall Iran’s nuclear programme. A source said the “Israelis want to believe that they can take this stuff out”, and will continue to agitate for military action if Iran continues to play hide and seek.

Do you see a bit of ZOG in that paragraph? I do. But then, it’s the Guardian, the most anti-Israel newspaper in the U.K.

To sum up: Don’t believe the hype. There will be signs if there ever is an attack on Iran. All of the major news media will break into whatever you’re watching with the news that Iran was attacked.

Seriously? Do they really think that Israel, the U.S., and the U.K. are going to telegraph an attack? Now that would be the dumbest move of all.

Friday morning at the auto shop briefs

Nobody told me it’s still dark after 7 a.m. Okay, it’s a cold, wet, rainy day (shout-out to the NYC #OWSers!), but still….

Well, this is different: An Iranian soldier whose parents converted to Islam to save their lives wants to make aliyah. The Mossad and Israeli government are currently investigating. How cool will that be? How pissed off will the Iranians be? Yes, I know they could be sending him in as a spy, but seriously? Do you think this guy is going to get access to any sensitive information? Yeah, me neither.

It’s the weenie contingent of the UNSC: France and Britain will abstain rather than vote for or against the Palestinian application for statehood. Way to make a statement, cowards! The U.S. needs nine no-votes to prevent a veto. Looks like Obama’s magic touch with our allies continues apace. Update: Okay, my bad. The Palestinians need nine yes-votes to force the veto, so it doesn’t matter if France and the U.K. take the weenie position.

Closer and closer to Gaza they came: The latest convoy of fools is nearing Gaza. Same old stuff, different day. They say they’ve all signed a non-violence pledge. We’ll see. Extra credit points to the person who recognizes the song lyric in the subhead for this entry.

Update: And the IDF has captured the latest ship of fools with no violence. You sort of have to wonder: What was the point?
