Hurricane Isabel: The scene in pictures

Next page

Heidi cooking in the dark

Willow wants to help Heidi cook. For some reason, her offer went untaken.

Sorena reads during the blackout

Sorena relaxes with a little bedtime reading every night. Two nights ago, it was via flashlight.

Leaves, leaves, everywhere

The dog porch, which leads into the dog's yard, was covered with leaves. This photo barely does it justice. It's as if someone simply dumped barrels of leaves and branches all over the yard, driveway, and front porch.

Across our street

This is what we woke up to the morning after Isabel. We were lucky. Not only was it a small tree, but as you can see, we didn't have to cut it to clear the street.

A mighty oak

Sorena sits on the trunk of the oak that fell. The view from the back windows has changed irrevocably, and none of us is glad about it.

Their old house

This is the front view of Heidi and G.'s old house. The yard was full of trees when they lived there, but not quite like this. One tree fell exactly across the place I used to park my Jeep. There isn't much damage to the house, but there's a hell of a lot of tree to cut out of the front yard.

Cleaning up the yard

A typical scene yesterday and today: Dad's cutting the tree apart, and the family's helping cart the pieces away. This one took a bit of the fence down with it.

Don't walk under this tree

Another typical scene is seeing large branches hanging by bits of wood. They're still quite dangerous and need to be removed.
