EATAPETA Day: The Tenth Anniversary Meatfest

Still pissed off at PETA? Want to get revenge on them for their all-kill shelters? (a 95% kill rate is close enough to all.) Then join the International Eat an Animal for PETA Day, the day where we eat animal products for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Meat: It's what's for dinner

Why eat meat? Because PETA doesn’t want us to. They don’t want us to eat eggs, milk, cheese, or any animal product, which means vegetarians who are offended by PETA’s deliberately offensive ad campaigns and a 97% kill-rate animal shelter can join us.

It all started ten years ago, when PETA ran an offensive ad they called “The Holocaust on your Plate”, using the famous picture of Elie Wiesel in Auschwitz to compare the slaughter of Jews to the slaughter of–wait for it–chickens. Yes, because they’re just like one another. As a bonus, they stole the picture and lied to get the rights to use it. A reader who is a child of Holocaust survivors alerted me to the campaign, and my philosophy has been more of a “Don’t get mad, get even” (or, well, get mad and get even). And so a blogger holiday was born.

Each year on March 15th, we chow down on animal products, tell each other what the menus will be/are/were, and make fun of PETA while we’re at it. Remember, this is the organization whose leader very publicly put in her will that she wanted her skin to be made into purses and she wants her meat barbecued. Yes, really.

Since it’s been ten years, there’s a Facebook group called EATAPETA (it’s pretty pathetic, because I forgot it existed and haven’t been using it much, but you’re all welcome to join). If someone wants to start a Twitter hashtag, feel free. I don’t do Twitter yet.

But no matter what, come Thursday, March 15th, celebrate EATAPETA’s tenth anniversary by eating meat and animal products. As uber-commenter Alex Bensky says, if it didn’t have a mother, don’t eat it.

Media bias as the rockets fall on Israel? Yeah, we got that

There’s so very much material, one hardly knows where to start.

The Guardian:

At least 15 killed in Israeli air strikes on Gaza
Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip have killed at least 15 people
in an escalation of the worst clashes with Palestinian militants so far this year.

The strikes began on Friday, when Israeli air raids killed the senior militant leader Zohair al-Qaisi, the secretary general of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC). Israel claimed he was targeted because he was planning an attack.

All the dead are terrorists, or “militants” in the whitewashed MSM term.

CNN:

Israel airstrikes target Gaza, killing at least 14

Buried at the very end of the CNN story, a quote from a woman who obviously isn’t even reading the news:

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton urged both sides to “avoid further escalation” and “re-establish calm.”

“I very much deplore the loss of civilian life,” she said in a Saturday statement.

Terrorists. If civilians had been killed, they’d have led with that first. Because it’s always an awful thing when Palestinian civilians are killed, though when Israeli civilians die, the media assure us that it’s “the cycle of violence”–usually initiated by Israel.

The AP, helpfully explaining how it’s all Israel’s fault:

The flare-up began midmorning Friday, when an Israeli airstrike tore apart al-Qaissi’s blue sedan and killed his son-in-law, Mahmoud Hanini, also a PRC commander. Another low-ranking Gaza militant also died.

Some of the militants subsequently killed in Israeli strikes were planning to fire rockets, said Palestinian militant spokespeople. Other militants were targeted, but it wasn’t immediately clear why.

The military said al-Qaissi was plotting an infiltration attack into Israel similar to the raid from Egypt’s Sinai peninsula that they claim he orchestrated in August, which killed eight Israelis and injured 40 more.

And here’s a very curious description of why Israel bombs smuggling tunnels:

The PRC is responsible for dozens of deadly attacks against Israelis and its members frequently fire rockets into Israel.

Israel often targets Gaza militants it says are preparing attacks, but tensions have been relatively calm in recent months with Israel mostly targeting smuggling tunnels from Egypt.

Note how, even though the first paragraph describes rocket attacks, the second one makes it seem like Israel just randomly decides to fire on the tunnels–not that they do it in response to the regular rocket attacks by groups like the PRC. Also note that the AP has utterly ignored the rocket attacks until now–which is par for the course. Suddenly, the number of rocket attacks matter.

So far, militants have fired 92 rockets. The military said its air defense systems intercepted some 25 rockets before they landed.

In comparison, Palestinian militants fired some 50 rockets toward Israel in the three months preceding the flare up, a military spokesman said. He spoke anonymously in line with military regulations.

Now that they can use the number of rocket attacks to make Israel look bad, not the Palestinian terrorists, the AP notes that terrorists have fired twice as many rockets in the last few hours as it has in the last three months. The good news is that Iron Dome has knocked down 27 of 30 rockets aimed at Israeli cities. That’s gotta be pissing off the terrorists, big-time. I sure hope they have a few more Iron Dome batteries handy if they strike Iran. Oh, wait. Israel is getting more.

Israel under fire from Gaza

The IDF took out some major terrorists, including some that were released in the prisoner swap for Gilad Shalit. The result?

Southern Israel under heavy fire: Four people were wounded after a rocket exploded in southern Israel’s Eshkol region Friday night.

One victim was said to be in serious condition; a second man suffered moderate wounds and two other men were lightly wounded.

Earlier, the Iron Dome anti-rocket defense system shot down at least two Grad rockets fired at the southern Israel communities of Ashdod and Gan Yavne, as Gaza terrorists continued to pound southern Israel Friday night.

And why the barrage?

The latest round of fighting in the Gaza region began Friday afternoon, after the IDF targeted a vehicle traveling in Gaza City, killing Popular Resistance Committees’ Secretary General Zuhir al-Qaisi and another senior group figure recently freed in the Gilad Shalit swap.

The army said al-Qaisi was in final stages of planning a major terror attack at Israeli targets on the Egypt border.

The AP, of course, blames Israel. Note the cause-and-effect:

An Israeli airstrike in Gaza on Friday killed the commander of the militant group behind the abduction of Gilad Schalit, an Israeli soldier who was held captive for more than five years and freed in a prisoner swap for more than 1,000 Palestinians.

The midday attack marked the highest profile Israeli strike against the coastal strip in several months and immediately sparked retaliatory rocket attacks toward Israel — raising the specter of a violent escalation after a period of relative calm.

Just the narrative. It’s Israel’s fault. Terrorists about to attack Israel getting killed? Well, that might cause the terrorists to attack Israel. It’s lose-lose all the time in Israeli Double Standard Time.

Friday briefs, with extra media bias thrown in

The narrative: The Ynet version of an attack on an IDF medic, and the AP version of what happened. Strangely enough, the AP version has a witness saying the Palestinian who was killed was not taking part in the attack, whereas the Ynet version names him as one of the attackers. (That’s why I call them Palestinian spokesliars.) The AP version of the attack on an Israeli soldier is, as it often is, buried inside a story purporting to show how Israel is being mean to Palestinians. There’s yet another “protest” going on (read: misnamed riot). And the IDF is using tear gas and water cannons on women, knocking one down. Gasp!

Soldiers fired tear gas and aimed a water cannon Thursday at about 50 women marching in support of Hana Shalabi, who has gone without food for 22 days. A woman was knocked down.

Those mean, mean soldiers. Why are they hurting those innocent women?

Palestinian teens threw rocks at the soldiers from behind the women’s march.

Oh. Something that the AP should have led with, perhaps? Palestinian teens throwing rocks caused the women to be fired upon, and this is what they do. The media, of course, rarely ever put this information into their stories. I’m sure the reporter and editor will be spoken to about their mistake.

The slow drip-drip of the anti-Israel media line: Read these links in order, and you will see how the AP changes what was a very positive piece into one that makes Netanyahu look like he’s about to drop the bomb on Iran. One. Two. Same story. Different editions. Different angles. Always, with stories on Israel, the anti-Israel spin increases as the editions go on. Likewise, the pro-Palestinian spin on terror attack stories.

This is why children should not be collecting money for UNICEF: UNESCO voted to keep Syria on the human rights committee. Because Syria is all about the human rights, torturing, killing, and indiscriminately shelling civilians.

You have made me very happy

Thanks to all of you who donated to my nephew’s cross-country tour. He’s just under $200 to his goal with a day and a half left, making it a sure thing that his band will be hitting the road.

Nothing makes me happier than making friends and family happy.

You guys are great.

Only two days left!

My nephew’s band still needs about $800 for that cross-country tour. If you have even a dollar or two to spare, go to Kickstarter and pledge.

Aunt Meryl really wants to see her boy perform in Richmond. Plus, bonus of bonuses, I get to take care of four young people. They’ll be staying here between gigs. It’s a Jewish mother’s raison d’etre. (Okay, I’m not a mother, but I am Jewish, and I come from a long line of Jewish mothers, so it’s in the genes.)

So help my nephew, if you can. It means a lot to him and his band.

The Exception Clause, Part 2

Longtime readers know that The Exception Clause on this blog consists of the words “except for Israel” added to situations that every other nation is allowed. One example would be that all nations have the right to retaliate when being attacked with rockets, mortars, and missiles on a regular basis–except for Israel.

Well, it’s time we added an Exception Clause, Part 2. Here’s how it works:

For the record, I loathe Rush Limbaugh’s use of the term “feminazis” and always have. I think he should never have invented the term, and although I rarely listen to him, I always turn him off at the first sound of the F-word. But even more than that, I loathe the double standard of the media and the left (but I repeat myself) when it comes to who gets to call whom names. Either all of us get to do it, or none of us. This double standard is unbelievable, and what’s worse, all of my liberal friends think it does not exist. It does, people. It does.

Wednesday news roundup

And yet, in every generation, another enemy tries to destroy us: Marc Tracy in The Tablet on why Iran isn’t Haman, and how the world isn’t trying to destroy Israel. That’s a false choice, though. The whole world isn’t trying. Just a fair-sized part of it.

But they really want peace. No, really. After they’re done killing all the Jews, that’s the peace they want. The peace of the grave. Yet another Palestinian stabbing attack foiled.

Bibi at AIPAC: Watch the speech, if you haven’t already. I watched the pre-speech conference. There is no love at all between Obama and Netanyahu. Not a single smile from the president. But he has Israel’s back. No, really.

Except for the shaming part, I’d so pay money to see this: Rush Limbaugh vs. Rachel Maddow? I’m there. And by the way–when did your birth control become my problem? Buy it yourself. And there’s no way in hell she has to pay $1,000 a year for birth control. I’ve been there, I’ve done that, and $20 a month was the most I ever paid–out of my own pocket, because insurance didn’t cover the Pill back then. Goddamned entitled spoiled brats. Get a job, and shut up. (Why yes, I’m having HulkMS today. Why do you ask?)

Really, I wasn’t going to believe the story anyway: I read this Guardian story yesterday and wondered how accurate it could be, since it said that Hamas wouldn’t be Iran’s bitch in a war with Israel and wouldn’t join in. Well, today, Hamas said there’s no way they wouldn’t join in a war on Iran’s side.

A top Hamas official rejected Wednesday reports that the militant group would stay out of an armed conflict between Israel and Iran, saying that if indeed such a war erupts Hamas will retaliate with “utmost power.”

Of course they will. Because why would they let the hated Zionist enemy have an unprotected flank instead of achieving their dream of destroying the Jewish state? The Guardian used a second, anonymous source to confirm the named source, who is obviously part of the Hamas Big Lie Division that’s attempting to convince the anti-Israel media that Hamas wants to be a part of a moderate (stop laughing) Islamist government, just like the one in Egypt (really, stop laughing). Yep, my bullshit detector is still running in top form.

Speaking to the semi-official Iranian news agency Fars on Wednesday, top Hamas figure Mahmoud Zahar refuted a similar report apparently broadcast by BBC’s Persian website, saying: “Retaliation with utmost power is the position of Hamas with regard to a Zionist war on Iran.”

Yep.

Oops

This was supposed to go up on Friday.

I don’t know what to think about this: Obama is talking tough about Iran to Jeffrey Goldberg, saying he means what he says about Iran not getting nukes. I honestly don’t know what to make of it. I do know that I really, really, REALLY don’t want Israel to bomb Iran. I think that would be the worst possible scenario. So I think I’m going to hope that Obama–for once–actually means what he says–God help me.

Jaw-jaw, or war-war? Israel is testing the Arrow 3 missile interceptor system and letting everyone know it. The AP is showcasing Israeli bomb shelters. And India had to cancel a deal for Iranian oil because European insurers won’t go against the sanctions.

The Harvard stamp of approval: Harvard can distance itself as much as it wants and say that it’s just allowing the students to have a say, but holding a conference on the “one-state solution”–which is a conference on the end of the only Jewish state in the world–is not an expression of free speech. It is an expression of intent to kill. And it has the Harvard imprimatur, just as the modern version of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the Walt-Mearsheimer Israel Lobby smear, had the Harvard seal of approval. Any Jew who donates a penny to Harvard is contributing to the university that sponsors the worst anti-Semitism in America since the 1930s. As for the media, well, here’s the lead in the Boston Globe:

An upcoming conference at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government on the “one-state solution’’ to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is drawing ire from organizations who believe it promotes the elimination of Israel.

That’s because it does promote the elimination of Israel. It posits a binational state with the admission of all Palestinian “refugees” as defined by UNRWA, which means millions of descendants of the 750,000 refugees of 1948 would be allowed to settle (presumably) in Israel. Nobody actually ever suggests who is going to pay for this influx of people, but then, that’s not the issue. The issue is the end of Israel. Anyone who says otherwise is lying.

Pledge drive, part 2

My nephew’s band needs $849 more in pledges in order to go on their cross-country tour. I kicked in a hundred books. Five bucks apiece from a few dozen of you would go a long way, especially considering that a few thousand of you read this blog.

March 10th is the deadline. C’mon, folks, I haven’t asked for much lately, but making a young man’s dream come true with such a small amount of money? That would be wonderful. It’s easy. Paypal, Amazon, all kinds of ways to pledge or pay. Eighty-five people contributing ten dollars each would do it.

Thanks if you already have, and thanks if you do after reading this post!

Your lunchtime giggle

This is what you get when you have a Google News section for Turkey.

A neighbor has stalked Edna Geisler for two months. He lurks in her front yard, screeching at her constantly, even jumping out occasionally and attacking her when she dares wander outside alone.

“I’m afraid to go out of my house,” said Geisler, 69. “I have to go to the post office at 6 o’clock in the morning to avoid him.”

When she returned home with groceries recently, Geisler couldn’t get in her front door.

There’s a video at the link.

Shoot it and eat it, woman!

The always objective AP and Israel

Say, AP, bias much?

Once again, the AP uses extremely biased language to slant a story as anti-Israel as possible. Here’s the Ynet description of what happened at yet another Palestinian “protest” (Ynet called it what it was, a “violent clash”):

According to the report, Mohammad Taysir Abu-Awad was injured by a grenade used as crowd-control measures, during a violent clash between Palestinians and IDF forces at the Atara crossing, north of Ramallah.

And here’s the unbiased AP version. Lead paragraph. The one that goes out to all the newspapers. Note that the AP has obviously conducted an investigation, interviewed witnesses, and determined the soldier’s intent.

A young Palestinian man had his skull smashed after an Israeli soldier shot a tear gas canister at his head during a demonstration where he was hurling rocks on Monday, said an eyewitness and a medical official.

Way to be objective, AP! And lest you think it’s a fluke, well, further down the story you have the AP background on incidents like this:

Other Palestinians and their supporters have been killed by Israeli forces firing tear gas canisters.

Most recently, 28-year-old, Mustafa Tamimi from the West Bank village of Nabi Saleh was killed in December after he was shot in the face with a tear gas canister while hurling rocks at an armored vehicle jeep.

The senior Israeli military official said the soldier’s vision was limited by a gas mask and that Tamimi had run into the line of fire. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the subject.

Again, deliberate intent. The unbiased phrase would be “hit in the face,” but then, this is the AP, and they’re writing about Israel. Why be unbiased when the world likes it this way? It’s not until the very last paragraph that you learn that Palestinians have been rioting for weeks.

Israeli forces and Palestinians have clashed violently in recent weeks in and around the Jerusalem area. Palestinian youths have hurled mostly rocks, but also firecrackers and fire bombs at Israeli soldiers and paramilitary police, who have responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and on some occasions, live fire. In one clash on Feb. 24., soldiers shot and killed a 23-year-old Palestinian Talat Ramia.

And I will remind you once more, when the AP says “stones,” this is what they’re talking about. Giant chunks of concrete that can kill a person.

Just another day in the anti-Israel media world. Let’s see if they change the lead as the day goes by. I’m thinking not, on this one.

Monday snowy briefs

Really? Snow in Richmond? Really?

This is why they pay such a high price for hostages: A cadet in Israel went AWOL over the weekend, but nobody knew why he was missing at first. The entire country mobilized to find him. Israeli papers ran his picture and story, and he was finally found by “passersby.” When it comes down to brass tacks, Israel is a tiny nation, and everyone knows someone who knows someone. It’s probably not six degrees of separation there. I’m betting two. Because everyone in Israel wanted to make sure that Eshel Zilberstein wasn’t dead in a ditch somewhere. (Of course, the kid is now in big trouble for going AWOL, but that’s what he gets for trying to pull a stunt like that in a nation of Jewish mothers and grandmothers. Nu?)

Oh, look. Another warning to Iran: Ynet just happened to get a story from Israeli Military Industries about their new bunker-busting missile capabilities. Yeah, timing is everything.

Think the world media will run with this? The IAEA says there’s no way they can be sure Iran is working only on “peaceful” nuclear energy. Yeah, we know. But that won’t stop the AP from saying “Israel says” before every boilerplate about Iran and nukes. A hundred bucks says you won’t see the AP change its boilerplate to “the IAEA says”.

That makes it unanimous: The Palestinians are not happy with Obama’s AIPAC speech.

Barry Rubin on Obama’s speech: Read it in full, but here’s an excerpt.

Here’s the key line: “I will not hesitate to use force when it is necessary to defend the United States and its interests.”.

But there’s a catch: Obama is the one determining what U.S. interests are and what defending them means.

Just words.
