All is not well in Assadville: A big defection in Syria, some big-time general. You know, that Arab Spring is going to cause a Winter War, if you ask me. Israel had better gird its loins.

What kind of idiot would actually buy one of these? Some company actually created a book that self-destructs in 60 days if you don’t read it. Seriously? I mean, seriously?

What do you know, Obama’s lying about conservative Super-PACS, too: Jim Geraghty crunches the numbers and discovers that the anti-Romney super-PAC ads outnumber anti-Obama ads by over two to one in spending:

But that still leaves a two-to-one spending ratio of liberal anti-Romney efforts to conservative anti-Obama efforts. In fact, the president’s allies run the single biggest-spending and most negative super PAC of all: Priorities USA Action, founded by Obama’s former deputy White House press secretary, Bill Burton; Sean Sweeney, the former chief of staff to Rahm Emanuel; and Harold Ickes, who was deputy chief of staff to President Bill Clinton. This super PAC has spent $13.5 million in opposition to Romney so far, outspending all the super-PAC efforts opposing the president combined. While Priorities USA Action is often described as a “pro-Obama” super PAC in news coverage, it has yet to spend a single penny that it categorizes as “supporting” President Obama; all of its spending is classified as “opposing” Mitt Romney.

But don’t worry, you’ll hear plenty about how the Republicans are buying the election. It’s the media narrative. Watch for it.

OMG! Yasser Arafat was poisoned by Zionists!1!!1

Based on some Swiss doctor’s report that they found elevated levels of polonium on Arafat’s clothing, they have exhumed the mass-murderer’s body and will be testing it. Of course, the rumors that were made up by Israel’s foes are swirling again–the evil Zionists must have poisoned Arafat! And yet, here’s what it comes down to:

A Swiss doctor said Wednesday they found high levels of toxic polonium-210 on some of Arafat’s belongings, though it does not mean he suffered radiation poisoning.

“We have evidence there is too much polonium, but we also have hints from the medical records that this may not be the case,” said Francois Bochud, director of the Institut de Radiophysique in Lausanne, Switzerland. “The only way to resolve this anomaly would be by testing the body.”

That is not, of course, the story the media are running with. OMG ISRAEL MUST HAVE POISONED ARAFAT!!1!1 is the story that’s running through most outlets. Look for the accusations to get stronger and the Palestinians to call for a UN investigation into Arafat’s death. Oh. Wait. Here it is.

Senior Palestinian official Saeb Erakat called for a probe into Arafat’s death.

“We call for the formation of an international investigation committee, modeled on the international investigation committee set up to look into the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Hariri,” he told AFP.

The fact of the matter is that Arafat, who was a homosexual, died of AIDS. But homosexuality is forbidden in Islam, and the narrative that their great “revolutionary” hero was gay and died of AIDS would utterly ruin the terrorist narrative. Here’s the most pertinent part of the Ynet op-ed that reminds us how Arafat really died:

And now, al-Jazeera comes out with an investigative report about a radioactive substance that killed Arafat. The report does not explain where exactly all these articles of clothing, tainted with this radioactive substance, were being held for the past seven years, ever since they were taken from their owner.

Uh-huh. But don’t worry, the anti-Israel narrative has been set. The New York Times runs with the story even as you read this, buried in the middle of it:

Though the hospital records were never made public, fueling speculation and rumors about the cause of death, they were obtained by The New York Times in 2005. The records showed that he had died of a stroke that resulted from a bleeding disorder caused by an underlying infection. The infection was never identified. The hospital found no traces of poisons.

Funny how that paragraph doesn’t go after this one, which is the lead:

A potentially explosive re-examination of the circumstances behind the death of Yasir Arafat, the symbol of the Palestinian national struggle, has galvanized Palestinian suspicions that he was poisoned and led the Palestinian Authority to agree in principle on Wednesday to an exhumation of his remains, possibly within days.

You would think, based on journalistic best practices, that if the Times could provide evidence that Arafat wasn’t poisoned, they would be bound to present that evidence right after the accusation. You would think. But then, the media isn’t about the truth. The media is all about selling papers and setting the narrative. So the Times buries the fact that poison was ruled out at the time of his death, and continues the “Palestinians are going to go ballistic about poison reports!” narrative.

Same story, different time. Lather, rinse, repeat. And all the time, Arafat is still dead, I am still glad about that, as he was the worst mass-murderer of Jews since Hitler, and this is a stupid, stupid story. But it will go on until they manufacture evidence that “proves” Israel did it.

Tuesday briefs

Why is this woman smiling? Because she’s escaping from those freaky scientologists: Katie Holmes has escaped the conditioning and is divorcing Tom Cruise. The Daily News is all over the story (which totally amuses me), including showing this one, showing a bunch of goons waiting outside her hotel. The reason she’s leaving him? Word is that scientology wants her six-year-old daughter, and Katie finally woke up to the fact that scientology is nothing more than a crazy cult. Pass the popcorn, celebrity watches, and root for Katie. I think she’s going to get the win, which will be sole custody of Suri. Katie’s dad is a divorce lawyer. Good luck, Katie! I’m cheering for you. Cue the scientology nutjob emails/comments in 3… 2… 1 (they always do, and I always ignore them or tell them to go away).

Gee, ya think? Bashar al-Assad says he regrets shooting down the Turkish jet. No. Really? In other news, Anderson Cooper is gay, and the sun rises in the east. And of course, the Dorktator says he really wishes his air force had shot down an Israeli plane.

Statehood by any other means: The PA continues its UN push for statehood by trying to insinuate itself into a conference that only UN member states can attend. It was blocked by the US, the EU, and Israel. But the US did not stop the anti-Israel hatefes at the UN yesterday. The Obama administration did not block the attempt by the UNHCR to vilify Israel. It agreed to it as a quid-pro-quo for taking up the Syrian cause. Read it all, and remember how often Obama pretends to be Israel’s greatest friend. Yeah, with friends like him, Israel could be facing an existential war on her own.

That unity agreement’s not looking so good these days: Hamas has stopped voter registration in Gaza, meaning, of course, that there will be no new elections. All those surprised, please take three steps backwards.

This is why I won’t put Facebook on my phone: I don’t use my main email address for my FB account, and I won’t use my phone because it’s simply not that important to me (plus I’m too cheap to get the intertubes on my phone). Because FB took over your email contacts and switched them all over to its own email system. Awesome, FB. Way to make people believe you’re interested in their privacy concerns. Hey, I have a tablet without 4G because I don’t need it yet. I bought the tablet so I can write in the waiting rooms of doctors’ offices. And it’s worked. I probably wrote about 2000 words of my novel that way. Between that and my work laptop, all my smartphone does is text.

Monday briefs

Oh, so that’s why summer feels so long already: Did you know there was a leap second added to the year? And that it wreaked havoc on the interwebs?

More evidence of Justice Roberts’ cowardice: More articles are coming out about how the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court yielded to op-eds and politicos’ opinions, rather than deal with the actual legalities of the Obamacare case. Republicans are vowing repeal, but the damage to the Constitution is done. The Supremes hate upsetting precedent, and the precedent has been set that Congress can do any damned thing it pleases as long as it calls it a tax and not a mandate.

Gee, I wonder why Israelis don’t want to work for the UN? Apparently, the fact that there are only two Israeli “volunteers” (volunteers get a monthly salary, health benefits, and can have their families join them overseas–only in the UN is a salaried worker called a “volunteer”) is causing the UN to try to lure more Israelis into working in UN projects in Third World nations. Because it’s not like Israel doesn’t already teach Third World nations how to use drip irrigation, desalinization plants, or send in help during disasters. Oh. Wait. They do. Hey, I have an idea for a slogan: Come work for the UN, Israelis, and we’ll hate you a tiny bit less!

That’s because Abbas is stealing too much, too fast: The PA is supposedly having its worst financial crisis ever. Perhaps those leaders of the PA should open up their Swiss bank accounts and put back some of the money they stole. That ought to cover it. Oh, don’t be ridiculous. Of course I don’t believe they would. But they should. And why are they having a shortfall? Besides the thievery, I mean. Because the Arab donor nations aren’t ponying up. Gee, you’d think that their “beloved Palestinian brothers” would never run out of donations, wouldn’t you? Shyeah. Right.

Oh, don’t be ridiculous. Jews weren’t in the Galilee 1600 years ago: More evidence of the Jewish heritage in the Jewish homeland. No matter how hard the Palestinians try, they can’t erase our history.

Bomb the crap out of them and they won’t be able to: The IDF says Hezbollah might fire on cargo ships to cause a blockade of Israel during a war. Guess that means the IAF has to work fast. But if Hezbollah does that, and the Egyptians close the Suez–which is more likely than the ones professing that Egypt is run by Islamic “moderates”–it’s going to be hard on Israel.

More concerned with history than with law

One of the reasons the Supreme Court Justices are elected for life terms is so that they can consider the laws without regard to who is offended by the judgments they make. But the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was apparently more affected by what people think than by what the Constitution says.

He switched his vote due to public pressure.

Chief Justice John Roberts initially sided with the Supreme Court’s four conservative justices to strike down the heart of President Obama’s health care reform law, the Affordable Care Act, but later changed his position and formed an alliance with liberals to uphold the bulk of the law, according to two sources with specific knowledge of the deliberations.

What a jerk. What an ass. What a coward.

It is not known why Roberts changed his view on the mandate and decided to uphold the law. At least one conservative justice tried to get him to explain it, but was unsatisfied with the response, according to a source with knowledge of the conversation.

My left toe has more integrity than Roberts.

Sunday morning post-sleepover briefs

The girls are gone (sadly), the house is quiet (sigh), and I must get back to work. You know, it’s a lot of fun having two post-high school, pre-college girls sleep over your house. But there does seem to be an overabundance of leftover junk food. Next time, I won’t buy so much.

Anti-Semitism in Europe turning to attempted murder: Shots were fired at a U.K. Yeshiva over the weekend. This is as a Muslim couple is being charged with planning to bomb Jewish charities and synagogues in the U.K. Because nothing says “Zionism” like a synagogue, right? Can we stop pretending that “anti-Zionists” are anything but Jew-haters? Anyone who says he is against Zionism is against the right of the Jewish people–of all the people on the planet–to have their own country. And to round up the anti-Semitic attack story of the day, another Jewish cemetery has been vandalized, this time in Vienna.

German court rules circumcision is child abuse: So basically, Germany is all set to outlaw Judaism by banning circumcision. So, are they going to rule that piercing a baby’s ears is child abuse, too? I’m just wondering. Because many women choose to have their daughter’s ears pierced as infants. As always, Andrew “I’m not a Jew-baiter, I just bait Jews by accident” Sullivan is on the case, as this put-down of his awful arguments shows. By the way, Jews and Muslims are now united against the ruling. Way to go, Germany!

The war on Christians continues: Followers of that peaceful religion of Islam murdered 17 Kenyans for the crime of worshipping in church this morning. But don’t worry, we’re certain that the Palestinians would never harm, say, the Church of the Nativity, now that they’ve used shady methods to get it declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Because Islam is tolerant of other religions. Just ask the 17 dead Kenyans. Oh. Wait.

A quiet Sunday morning

I have two teenage girls asleep in my guest room. My niece Sorena and a friend came over yesterday to eat kabobs and junk food and watch a ton of TV. When I heard that Victoria liked Clue, we cued up the old movie on Amazon Instant Video and settled in to watch Tim Curry and a cast of greats in a very funny movie from the 80s.

I went to bed at 1:30, and when I woke up an hour later, they were still going strong. I’ll have to wake them eventually, since they have to leave at 11:15, but for now, they’re sleeping happily.

Post-Obamacare briefs

That new civility: “it’s Constitutional. Bitches” is the tweet sent by the executive director of the DNC. Not a staffer. Not a young intern. The man in charge of the Democratic National Committee. To quote Todd Manning from General Hospital: I know the French word for shower, and he is one. Oh, and the war on women? Look in the mirror, Dems.

Losing the battle: More than a few Constitutional scholars think that Chief Justice Roberts wrote the ACA opinion in a way that turns the Commerce Clause back to its pre-FDR mangling. Jonathan Adler and Ilya Somin are two. Here’s an opposing view.

Why isn’t it “UN, save us”? Five hundred Eritrean refugees protested in Tel Aviv using the slogan “US, Save us.” We all know why the Eritreans aren’t asking the UN or the EU for help. They know that since they’re not Palestinians, the UN doesn’t give a crap. UNRWA is the gold standard of refugees. They should go to the West Bank or Gaza and see how they’re treated there. Shyeah. Right.

Phew! They stopped a deadly settler attack: The IDF finished evacuating an illegal settlement–fairly peacefully. The AP, of course, still manages to spin this act anti-Israel and anti-Netanyahu.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s largely right-wing coalition, which leans heavily on the settler movement for support, has repeatedly sought to stall implementation of the High Court’s judgment.

And while the affected residents are moving before the July 1 deadline, the government has asked the High Court to grant a four-month delay on moving the buildings affected by the ruling. The court has yet to respond.

Biased media? Oh, come on. You’re joking.

Don’t really care who killed him, it’s great that he’s dead: Another terrorist is executed, and Hamas is squabbling over whodunit–Israel or Syria. Like I care. Although I do agree with the ones who say the death was too cruel for the Mossad.

The Palestinian Church of the Nativity: Yes, that’s what the PA thinks it is. they’re still pushing for designation as a World Heritage Site, even though it’s a Christian heritage site, and the PA has been slowly but surely persecuting all of the Christians in the West Bank. They failed once. Here’s hoping they fail again.

Breaking: Obamacare passes the Supremes

Time to repeal it.

Amy Howe: The individual mandate survives as a tax.

Tom: So the mandate is constitutional. Chief Justice Roberts joins the left of the Court.

Tom: The bottom line: the entire ACA is upheld, with the exception that the federal government’s power to terminate states’ Medicaid funds is narrowly read.

Now to get moving on repeal.

Update: This means that states can refuse to comply with it, and not be forced to by the government. This is not the great victory Obama wanted. The court is saying that he can pass a tax and force people to buy medical insurance, BUT–the individual states do not have to enforce it. If I’m interpreting the below correctly.

Lyle: The key comment on salvaging the Medicaid expansion is this (from Roberts): “Nothing in our opinion precludes Congress from offering funds under the ACA to expand the availability of health care, and requiring that states accepting such funds comply with the conditions on their use. What Congress is not free to do is to penalize States that choose not to participate in that new program by taking away their existing Medicaid funding.” (p. 55)

Amy Howe: Another way to think about Medicaid: the Constitution requires that states have a choice about whether to participate in the expansion of eligibility; if they decide not to, they can continue to receive funds for the rest of the program.

Update 2: Or not. Oops.

Tom: Apologies – you can’t refuse to pay the tax; typo. The only effect of not complying with the mandate is that you pay the tax.

Update 3: The analysis.

Amy Howe: In Plain English: The Affordable Care Act, including its individual mandate that virtually all Americans buy health insurance, is constitutional. There were not five votes to uphold it on the ground that Congress could use its power to regulate commerce between the states to require everyone to buy health insurance. However, five Justices agreed that the penalty that someone must pay if he refuses to buy insurance is a kind of tax that Congress can impose using its taxing power. That is all that matters. Because the mandate survives, the Court did not need to decide what other parts of the statute were constitutional, except for a provision that required states to comply with new eligibility requirements for Medicaid or risk losing their funding. On that question, the Court held that the provision is constitutional as long as states would only lose new funds if they didn’t comply with the new requirements, rather than all of their funding.

Iranian anti-Semitism: Still no AP report

I guess it’s just not important enough. There’s still no AP story on the Iranian VP’s anti-Semitic speech. Reuters covered it.

The AP was too busy putting out long, in-depth stories about how the PA is trying to get the Church of the Nativity declared a UN heritage site. And spinning them as anti-Israel as possible. Because we know they’re so very, very fond of Christians. (What’s that? The Christian populations of the West Bank and Gaza have shrunk while Israel’s has expanded? The deuce you say!)

The AP is also busy burying the news of another terrorist attack in the middle of other stories where they gloss over terrorist attacks.

Hamed was found guilty of orchestrating bombings in a Jerusalem cafe, the cafeteria at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and other public places during the uprising that began in 2000. Israeli media showed video from the court, where Hamed was seen smiling.

These are the terror attacks the AP glosses over:

Hamed, 47, was arrested in 2006. He was convicted of having direct involvement in a string of terror attacks in Jerusalem, including the 2001 attack in Zion Square, which left 10 dead; the 2002 attack in Café Moment, which claimed 11 lives; the 2003 suicide attacks on Café Hillel, which left seven dead and 57 wounded; and the 2003 shooting attack in Zerifin which left nine dead.

But that wasn’t worth a single story for the AP. The article contains three separate elements: The conviction of Hamed, the latest terror attack (failed due to the guard shooting the Palestinian trying to take his weapon), and peace talks. Way to cover the news, AP!

Media gives cover to Iranian anti-Semitism

While I’m waiting for the AP news story about the despicable anti-Semitic remarks made by the VP of Iran during a UN forum against drugs, let’s check out the coverage of AFP, France’s biggest delivery system of news to European media. (No, the AP has not yet covered this speech, though it made the New York Times print edition today.)

Here is the AFP headline and lead. Note the way cover is immediately provided for the fig leaf of blaming Zionism.

Iran VP says Jewish law book to blame for drugs trade
The teachings of the Jewish book of law, the Talmud, are a driving force behind the international drug trade, Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi said in comments reported Wednesday.

Rahimi’s remarks, at an international anti-drug conference in Tehran attended by many foreign diplomats Tuesday, were a rare diatribe by an Iranian official targeting the Jewish faith, rather than the state of Israel.

Mahmoud Ahmedinejad gave an anti-Semitic speech at the UN, but because he used the word “Zionists,” the media gave it a pass. They tsk-tsk at his Holocaust denial, but don’t put two and two together to equal Jew-hater.

When even Helen Thomas’ former employer notices the blatant anti-Semitism, you’d think the AP would step up and report on it. (You gotta love this part of the UPI story.)

The New York Times described the speech delivered by Iranian Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi at the U.N. international drug trade conference in Tehran Tuesday as “baldly anti-Semitic,” shocking some of the European diplomats attending the conference. None of the diplomats, however, walked out of the meeting.

Why would they? Israel wasn’t speaking.

The anti-Zionism fig leaf falls from Iran

When even EU diplomats and the New York Times call it anti-Semitism, there’s no hiding behind the false label of anti-Zionism.

Iran’s Vice President Makes Anti-Semitic Speech at Forum
Iran’s vice president delivered a baldly anti-Semitic speech on Tuesday at an international antidrug conference here, saying that the Talmud, a central text of Judaism, was responsible for the spread of illegal drugs around the world.

European diplomats in attendance expressed shock. Even Iranian participants in the conference, co-sponsored by Iran and the United Nations, privately wondered at their government’s motive for allowing such a speech, even given its longstanding antagonism toward Israel.

They allow it because to date, the world has done effectively nothing to convince Iran that they’re doing anything wrong by slamming Jews using the fig leaf of “Zionists”. Ergo:

Mr. Rahimi, second in line to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said the Talmud teaches to “destroy everyone who opposes the Jews.”

The “Zionists” are in firm control of the illegal drug trade, Mr. Rahimi said, asking foreign dignitaries to research his claims. “Zionists” is Iran’s ideological term for Jews who support the state of Israel.

Note the New York Times’ explanation of Iran’s use of the word “Zionist”. That’s why he felt so comfortable saying this:

Mr. Rahimi, who spoke after Mr. De Leo, told stories of gynecologists’ killing black babies on the orders of the Zionists and claimed that the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 was started by Jews, adding that mysteriously no Jews died in that uprising.

He also said the Talmud teaches Jews to think they are a superior race. “They think God has created the world so that all other nations can serve them,” he said. Halfway through his speech, Mr. Rahimi said there was a difference between Jews who “honestly follow the prophet Moses” and the Zionists who are “the main elements of the international drugs trade.”

Did anyone walk out on the speech?

Nope. But they were shocked, shocked to hear the Iranians, who have sponsored conferences denying the Holocaust and extolling a world without Israel, slam Jews. Without the “Zionist” cover. So this excuse, pathetic as it is, is the norm.

A European diplomat said afterward: “This was definitely one of the worst speeches I have heard in my life. My gut reaction was: why are we supporting any cooperation with these people?”

But the diplomat, who declined to be identified by name or country, defended his presence at the conference. “If we do not support the United Nations on helping Iran fight drugs, voices like the one of Mr. Rahimi will be the only ones out there,” he said.

Right. Because walking out on a viciously anti-Semitic speech would be a sign that you’re not supporting the Iranian drug war. The twisted logic of the EU diplomat and the UN always seems to equal: Screw Israel.

Go figure.

Massive fires in Jerusalem: Bastards have been setting fires all over since it’s the dry season, and they saw how much it hurt Israel last year. They haven’t declared this one arson yet, but it had two separate points of origin. You do the math.

Does anyone else think this is utterly sacreligeous? Vladimir Putin visited the Western Wall. Something in me thinks it’s utterly wrong to let him near the remains of our Temple, because he’s helping Israel’s enemies kill Jews by supplying them with weapons–and the Iranians with the nuclear plants they’re using to create weapons-grade material.

It’s the Nutty Kartas: The assholes who vandalized Yad Vashem were “youths” from Neturei Karta.

The police have arrested three suspects in the vandalism of Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum earlier in June.

The four, ages 18, 26 and 27, who are residents of Jerusalem and Bnei Brak, belong to the Neturei Karta sect.

Disgusting people. Utterly disgusting. Too bad we don’t excommunicate. Jews thanking Hitler, even in graffiti, would seem to me to be an excommunicable offense.

What you mean we, Islamist? Turkey got a strongly-worded statement from NATO condemning Syria’s shooting down a Turkish jet. Looks like they’re on their own. For now. Erdogan is threatening to send in his troops. Here’s hoping.
