An example of media spin in Ynet

Let’s take a look at this article about Israeli opinion on turning over Jerusalem to non-Israeli rule. The headline:

Poll: 37% of Israelis willing to cede sovereignty in Jerusalem’s holy sites

My first thought at that headline was utter shock that so many Israelis were so willing to give up the Temple Mount to the governorship of people who have proven in the past that they have no intention of letting Jews worship at their own holy sites. But then I read the article.

Let’s look at the relevant data.

When asked who should remain sovereign of the Western Wall and Temple Mount, 61% believed Israel should be named sovereign, 16% voted for joint Israeli-Palestinian sovereignty, 21% said the holy places should be under international rule and 1% said Jordan should be named the holy places’ sovereign.

So, let’s rerun those numbers with a different spin. That 16% of joint rule should not be lumped in with those willing to “cede” sovereignty, as the Islamic Waqf already runs far too much of the Temple Mount complex. That’s not really ceding sovereignty, although under the current terms, Jews are not allowed to pray on the Temple Mount. Now the numbers run like this:

78% of Israelis want sole or partnered Israeli rule of Jerusalem’s holy sites.

But then, let’s take a look at the spin on handing the Hashemites the keys to the Jewish holy places, which was revealed in a news article yesterday (that Ehud Olmert immediately denied):

99% of Israelis not willing to cede sovereignty of Jerusalem’s holy sites to Jordan

So many different ways to spin this. Of course, the one that Omri is going to use is:

38% of Israelis out of their minds

As for my opinion: You have got to be kidding me. That many Israelis don’t care about the Temple Mount? That many Israelis have forgotten that under Muslim rules, Jews were forbidden to set foot on their holiest of holy places? That many Israelis don’t know that the Waqf is doing its damnedest to destroy all evidence of Jewish rule of Jerusalem in the Temple Mount?

What is wrong with those people?

It’s times like this that I worry the most for Israel.

The long winter of Nasrallah

Many bloggers more worthy than your humble servant already covered the latest performance by Nasrallah the famous Lebanese groundhog.

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah accused Israel of being behind the assassination of Lebanese politicians and urged feuding parties to agree on who should become president in order to end the country’s crisis.

So I wouldn’t waste words on this interesting, but not very novel, idea – after all every dastardly deed stems from this or that Elders’ dastardly plan. What is of immediate interest to me is the duration of Nasrallah’s self-imposed underground lifestyle. Especially related to that picture in the linked article. His color, unhealthy enough by itself from the lack of sunlight and the general underground shelter dankness, has become indistinguishable from the surrounding walls. Probably some kind of mimicry that may enable him to become invisible when hugging the wall while naked…

And his chances of getting out from the shelter, after more than an year of hiding, are practically non-existent. To remind you the rules of groundhog behavior:

In traditional weather lore, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter will soon end. If the groundhog sees its shadow because the weather is bright and clear, it will be frightened and run back into its hole, and the winter will continue for six more weeks.

Due to the sunny climate of Lebanon, the day when Nasrallah’s overfed body will not cast a shadow will hardly come anytime soon. Same with the day when he will be no more frightened…

EU to Israel: If the peace talks fail, it’s all your fault

The EU is at it again, unwilling to give even the tiniest portion of responsibility for the lack of peace in Israel and the terrortories[sic] to the Palestinians. Oh, no, it’s all on Israel.

The price of failure at the Annapolis conference in November could be greater than that of the Camp David conference in 2000, the EU’s special representative to the Middle East Marc Otte told Israeli reporters in Brussels on Monday.

Oh noes! Doom and gloom! Teh Middle East is falling!

Otte told the reporters that if Israel were to wait any longer it would be dealing with Hamas as its partner for peace rather than Abbas, and added that Israel’s lack of support of the Palestinian president in the past has contributed to the current situation in Gaza.

You get that part, right? Terrorism has nothing to do with the current situation in Gaza. Fatah’s corruption has nothing to do with the current situation in Gaza. Palestinian irredentism, and their willingness to insist that the only way out of their problem is to destroy Israel—none of these things had anything to do with the current situation. This is all about Israel refusing to support Mahmoud Abbas, a man who can only get elected dogcatcher after the pit bulls have been running wild for over a year.

Saying that both Israel and Palestinian leaderships were weak, Otte expressed uncertainty regarding the two leaders’ ability to bring about a solution to the conflict.

Otte added that it would be impossible to reach peace with only part of the Palestinian population and that Hamas would have to be included in the solution.

Yet another call to negotiate with Hamas. That would be the same group that’s tried at least seven times in the last six weeks to blow up Israelis via suicide bombs. Sure, talk to them. What could go wrong, besides, well, everything?

Yeah. Blind, clueless EU Middle East envoys… where have we seen this before? Oh. Right. That would be every single one of the EU Middle East envoys.

So you want to be a blogger

All right. I’m coming down to the wire for my adult bat mitzvah preparations. I have to cut back on time-wasting activities, which includes taping but not watching my favorite shows (I’m about to cut out my soap opera completely), and, well, blogging. I have to cut back.

Through a series of circumstances (that include a change of rabbis in my synagogue, which resulted in several of the children moving up their bar/bat mitzvah dates and leaving the rabbi with no time for me), I am rather far behind in my haftorah and Torah readings. So the time I would have spent watching TV and blogging is going to be spent practicing. Judith Weiss has kindly offered to help, as has Rahel. I work better with a person than I do with a computer or practicing on my own.

Blogging, as a result, must be light over the next few weeks. Soccer Dad and Snoopy will be posting, and I’m very grateful to them for that. But I have to cut back to one or two posts a day. So here’s your chance.

If you’ve been dying to write a post about Jewish and Israeli issues, email it to me. You can write it straight or funny. If it’s well-written and makes its point clearly, I will put it up as a guest post with whatever name or pseudonym you wish. If it isn’t up to the quality of writing I’d like to see on my site, I will send you a polite rejection letter. Don’t take it personally. I have very high standards.

If you already are a blogger, and think you have a post you’d like to get more attention here, that’s fine. Send it over, and you’ll get a link to your blog inside the post. Cross-posting is fine, too.

I’m looking to keep this site up to date while I’m busy over the next four weeks. After that, we’ll see what happens. I’m of the opinion that you can never have too much to read, only too little time in which to read it.

Ew, Jew Cooties: The Iranian ambassador to Chile showed up at an Israeli book party about a Zionist youth group. And he talked to the Israeli ambassador. Expect this guy to be recalled.

This better not be true: Jordan will take control of the Temple Mount.

Israel and the Palestinians have agreed that the Temple Mount as well as other parts of the Old City in Jerusalem will be under Jordanian control as part of a future peace deal, a Palestinian daily reported on Monday.

The London-based al-Quds al-Arabi reported that President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert reached the agreement during recent talks in Jerusalem. Under the arrangement, the Old City’s Arab residents will be granted Jordanian citizenship.

The newspaper did not say whether Israel would keep control of Jewish holy sites and neighborhoods in the Old City.

When Jordan controlled the complex, Jews were not allowed on it, and the Mount and the mosques were in disrepair. I’m not buying it. And Olmert denied it.

I’ll believe it when I see it: Abbas says he’s going to dismantle Force 17, the supposed “bodyguards” of the president that always seem to have their hands in the terrorist pie.

A Palestinian security official told Ynet Monday that in the coming days President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to order the dismantling of Force 17 and its incorporation into the Presidential Guard.

The status of Force 17, which served as Fatah’s special operations unit in the 1970s and ’80s and was responsible for the protection of Palestinian Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat, declined following the establishment of the Palestinian Authority and the formation of the Presidential Guard.

Uh-huh. Sure. I don’t think Abbas can dismantle a Lego toy.

The terror continues: Molotov cocktails, check. Shooting at soldiers, check. Seven thwarted suicide bombings in the last six weeks: Check.

The security forces thwarted seven suicide bombings in Israel in the last month-and-a-half, Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin told the cabinet Sunday. Diskin said that the ongoing efforts of the IDF, the Shin Bet and the police were behind the apparent calm in the country recently.

Diskin told the ministers that an IDF operation in the Beit Ilma village near Nablus prevented a large suicide bombing set to be carried out in Tel Aviv during the holidays. However, he added that the Shin Bet was concerned about the fact that the explosive belt was passed through several checkpoints undetected.

Rocket attacks, smuggling of weapons and explosives, double check:

According to Diskin, a significant drop has been registered in the number of rockets launched from Gaza, from 110 Qassams in August to 85 in September. The Shin Bet attributes the decrease to Hamas’ decision not to fire rockets.

On the other hand, the smuggling of weapons into Gaza has increased since Hamas rose to power, said Diskin, making Gaza “a barrel of explosives.”

They better hope nobody throws a match and runs.

At long last, Rob!

I can finally call Rob by his name when referring to his online persona.

Something that only my very long-time readers know is that the blogosphere would have caught up with Rob eventually no matter what—the man is talented, smart, personable, and innovative—but when Rob first arrived in the blogosphere, the only person he knew online was yours truly. He emailed me to let me know that he had started blogging. I linked to his first efforts, and emailed Glenn Reynolds that there was a new kid in town, and he was one to watch.

There’s a new kid in town. And I know him, so I’m throwing him some link-love. Go have a look at The Truth Laid Bear, a man who is finding his blog voice. (And the fact that he has blackmail pictures of me has nothing to do with my recommendation, I swear.) He has some interesting things to say about Glenn Reynolds and Andrew Sullivan. Okay, and me, too. (But that has nothing to do with my having blackmail pictures of him, I swear.)

Glenn agreed with me. Rob’s star rose in the blogosphere quickly, and he wrote an article about BBSes that was published by Salon and widely disseminated before the bits were dry on his first blog.

I met Rob in 1986, when we were both BBSing at several sites in New Jersey. He was friends with a programmer that wrote BBS software and ran his own BBS that my friends had all found and liked. My friends talked me into buying a modem and the rest, as they say, is history.

Programming Guy was your typical unsocialized programmer whose only friends at that time were other programmers at work, and some really smart kids like Rob. (Side note about Programming Guy: He’s now happily married. My friends and I left a trail of socialized programming geeks behind us in the late 80s and 90s. We helped them see that there is life outside of computers.)

So although Rob was just a cub when we met, that was over 20 years ago, and he’s not a cub any longer. And I’m nearing a milestone birthday next month, which is as close as I will come to admitting my age online until the weekend of my bat mitzvah.

But back to the subject at hand: Rob took his opportunity and ran with it. He was smart enough to invent and develop the TTLB ecosystem, and then all of the great things that grew out of his contacts and ingenuity. And now he’s off and running with a new company, because the money people discovered what I knew years ago: Rob is a great and talented guy, and he’s going to go places.

It’s true that he has a blackmail photo of me and a man who is now in the CIA. (Come to think of it, the blackmail is on the CIA guy, not me.) But hey, who doesn’t have a picture of themselves from the 80s that could be misconstrued by the casual viewer? I lost contact with CIA guy. I’ll never lose contact with Rob. And now, he’s out in the open as a regular guy with a real name. No more pseudonyms!

I don’t really have any blackmail photos of Rob, but I have a great picture of me sitting between Rob and Citizen Smash at a restaurant near the Pentagon in January. That was the day I drove up to have lunch with Rob and Scott after hearing that Rob was in DC for the week. That’s also the day I met the CIO of Company in Northern Virginia, which started me on the path toward my current employment. So in a way, Rob is responsible for my landing my current job. He got me to get my butt up to Northern VA. And a couple of weeks after the meeting, Company landed a contract that needed a web person, fast—and there I was, with my mad web skilz going unused.

Which is a roundabout way of saying, all this, and he helped me get a job, too—without even realizing it. The man is talented and lucky.

Welcome to the Blogosphere, Rob Neppell, my old friend. Glad to finally be able to call you by name in a post. Mazel tov on the new company, and continued good luck and prosperity. And nu, you could call me once in a while… I have to find out from Hot Air that you’re no longer using a pseudonym?

Okay, that’s enough guilt. I’m so proud of him.

It’s not anti-Zionism, it’s anti-Semitism

UC Davis “anti-Zionists” vandalized a Sukka on the campus.

Student Programs and Activities Center representatives reported a hate crime yesterday, as graffiti was found defacing a small hut on the Quad being used for a Jewish holiday.

The booth, called a Sukkot or Sukkos, was set up on the east Quad as part of a weeklong celebration of one of three Jewish holidays known collectively as Shalosh Regalim.

The graffiti was discovered by SPAC and then reported to several organizations on campus, including the UC Davis Police Department and Hillel. Mike Amerikaner, program director of Hillel, said that the vandalism is unrelated to the holiday, though it made reference to Israel.

“This is a religious structure that has nothing to do with Israel,” he said.

No, it doesn’t. Except for the fact that Israel is the homeland of the Jews. Can we stop pretending that denying Israel the right to nationhood isn’t anti-Semitic now, or do we still have to pretend that people who want an end to the Jewish State aren’t anti-Semites? At least in thought, if not in deed, as someone else—who got fired for that and other things—said.

The Chabad rabbi is in shock over the attack. That’s because he doesn’t know UC Davis.

Rabbi Shmary Brownstein, co-director of the Chabad House with wife Sorele Brownstein, said in an interview on Sunday that a Hillel official notified him of the vandalism on Friday, the last day of Sukkot. In more than four years on campus, he said, this is the first time he’s had to deal with someone singling out a sukkah for vandalism.

“This is a sukkah,” he stated in amazement. “The existence of it is a religious requirement and not a political statement in any way.”

It doesn’t matter. The anti-Zionists crossed the line into anti-Semitism a long, long time ago. UC Davis shows that. And apparently, so does San Jose State.

Another California sukkah, the one outside of S. Jose State University’s Hillel of Silicon Valley, was found torched last week.

Because what’s a Jewish holiday without a little religious-symbol burning, hm? Sure, make a statement about those nasty Israelis. Burn down your college sukkah. That’ll show those “zionists.”

There are pictures at both links. Disgusting. But remember, they keep telling us it isn’t anti-Semitism.

Except that it is.

Vandalzing a religious symbol is not a protest against “occupation.” It is the vandalization of a Jewish religious symbol.

Now it is the booksellers’ turn

The body of a Christian official who was kidnapped over the weekend was discovered in Gaza City early Sunday, Palestinian sources said. The man was identified as Rami Ayyad, 31, director of The Teacher’s Bookshop, which is operated by the Palestinian Bible Society. Although no group claimed responsibility for the murder, a number of Christians in Gaza City told The Jerusalem Post that Ayyad had received several death threats in the past from radical Muslims who accused him of conducting missionary activities. His bookshop and the Palestinian Bible Society had been the target of repeated attacks over the past two years.

I do believe I have purchased my copy of Koran in some British bookshop. I distinctly don’t remember any special protective measures undertaken by the bookseller in case some radical Jew or Christian decides to bomb the shop or to dispose of a seller or two.

Have to check with some Brits or Yanks on this one.

Oh, and it will be educational to hear the response from the Church of England’s chief…

“Crude, homemade rockets” still landing in Israel

The daily rocket and mortar fire—which somehow doesn’t get nearly as much notice by the media as the daily “humiliations” of checkpoints—continues to fall on Israel.

Eight mortar shells and four Qassam rockets landed in the Negev Sunday morning, as residents continued to suffer the brunt of Palestinian munitions fired at the country.

The eight mortar shells, which were launched from the northern Gaza Strip, landed in the Eshkol Regional Council kibbutz of Keren Shalom. One of the shells hit a house, causing a fire. Fire fighters rushed to the scene; no one was injured.

“Luckily for us, the kibbutz dwellings are fortified, and the open areas of the kibbutz are also fortified. I really hope something is done to stop the shooting,” said Eli Aharon, deputy head of the Eshkol Regional Council.

The rockets are falling because the rocketeers aren’t suffering many consequences. It’s rare that the IDF manages to actually get the ones firing the rockets, and when they do, there are always more ready to take their places. And oh, yeah—those “crude, homemade rockets”—not so much.

The Salah-al-Din Brigades, the armed wing of the Popular Resistance Committees, claimed responsibility for the mortar shell attack, and said the rocket that landed near the Netivot cemetery was a new and improved type of mortar shell.

According to findings by the Negev police explosives lab, the rocket was in fact a Katyusha rocket.

Sources in the IDF claimed it was a long-range Grad missile. Further testing of the missile is still underway.

Imagine, if you would, that this man lived in San Diego, and suffered continuouous rocket fire from Mexican terrorists who were trying to “liberate” California from the U.S. and return it to the indigenous people (in spite of the fact that the real indigenous people would be, gee, the Mexican Indian tribes that were massacred by the Spaniards centuries ago). Let’s do that for a moment:

San Diego manager Ilan Regev told Ynet that mortar shells frequently landed in the town. “It’s scary, but we live with it. This is the first time a house was directly hit. Before, windowpanes were broken, but never something like this,” Regev said.

Now, what it really looks like:

Really. The concept of rockets and mortars falling on your town on a regular basis? “It’s scary, but we live with it.”

Why? Because Olmert is not a leader. Because the world will rise up in unrighteous indignation if Israel sends in the IDF to clean out the nests of terrorists firing rockets at civilians, though they will not rise up in protest of the Palestinians trying to murder Israeli schoolchildren in Sderot. Because the world thinks that if the Palestinians only get their own state, the terrorists will stop trying to make Sderot a ghost town.

Why would they stop? The rocket fire is working. Not even Israel cares enough to make it stop.

The Syria strike: It was nukes

ABC News has an exclusive today that says the Syria strike was a nuclear facility, and that the U.S. stopped Israel from striking earlier.

The September Israeli airstrike on a suspected nuclear site in Syria had been in the works for months, ABC News has learned, and was delayed only at the strong urging of the United States.

In early July the Israelis presented the United States with satellite imagery that they said showed a nuclear facility in Syria. They had additional evidence that they said showed that some of the technology was supplied by North Korea.

One U.S. official told ABC’s Martha Raddatz the material was “jaw dropping” because it raised questions as to why U.S. intelligence had not previously picked up on the facility.

Yeah, that would be the same intelligence that didn’t pick up on al Qaeda and 9/11. Good to know they’re just as crappy now as they were then. I feel so safe. Not.

Officials said that the facility had likely been there for months if not years.

“Israel tends to be very thorough about its intelligence coverage, particularly when it takes a major military step, so they would not have acted without data from several sources,” said ABC military consultant Tony Cordesman.

A senior U.S. official said the Israelis planned to strike during the week of July 14 and in secret high-level meetings American officials argued over how to respond to the intelligence.

Some in the administration supported the Israeli action, but others, notably Sect. of State Condoleeza Rice did not. One senior official said the U.S. convinced the Israelis to “confront Syria before attacking.”

Officials said they were concerned about the impact an attack on Syria would have on the region. And given the profound consequences of the flawed intelligence in Iraq, the U.S. wanted to be absolutely certain the intelligence was accurate.

Gee, good idea. Let Syria know you know about their secret nuclear weapons site, so they can move it and hide it somewhere else.

All of the military analysis is predicated on the fact that the Syrians would use conventional weapons, as well as possibly chemical and biological agents. In the meantime, Syria is working with North Korea (doubtless funded by Iran) to hopscotch over the little details of developing scientific knowledge yourself—which takes decades—to simply buy instant Israeli destruction. Thanks so much, effing Pakistan, and France, for helping spread nuclear technology beyond the original five nations. Now Russia is working with Iran to do the same, and Iran is working on an ICBM that can reach the U.S. Europe is already within reach.

And watch: From the left and from the Israel-haters, they will insist that Israel’s intelligence was cooked. This, in spite of North Korea’s reaction, and in spite of the fact that Syria has had nothing to say, and has not demanded a UN investigation, or a Security Council or General Assembly resolution condemning the raid.

That silence speaks volumes.

It was nukes.

PA to Israel: Do what we say and shut up

Yet another demand from the Palestinians who, when last I checked, were the vanquished, not the victors, in the Intifada.

Ahmed Qureia, head of the Palestinian team to negotiate a peace agreement with Israel said on Saturday that there was no way Palestinians would attend the upcoming international peace conference unless a declaration of principles was formed.

In an interview to Saudi newspaper al-Watan, Qureia was asked what the Palestinians’ stance would be if a declaration of principles was not reached before the November conference to be held in Annapolis.

“If that happens, the situation won’t be good, and we will have to decide between two alternatives: To go or not to go (to the conference). The content of the document is the important thing. If the document contains vague statements – it should not be composed at all”, Qureia said.

The former PA prime minister added that a Palestinian state without Jerusalem or the Gaza Strip would not be considered a state to Palestinians.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Gaza is an internal matter, not one that Israel has any say over.

Truly unbelievable chutzpah, but hey, the world has indulged the Palestinian fantasy that they deserve everything they want, and so, it is not surprising. Nor is this:

In Friday’s meeting, Abbas told his guests that a solution for Jerusalem would be key to any peace deal. Israelis and Palestinians both claim the city as a capital.

“Jerusalem has always been in our hearts, and the hope that we have been looking at,” Abbas was quoted as saying. “There is no independent Palestinian state without Jerusalem as its capital. It is a concern in the coming, difficult days.”

It’s always been in their hearts, except it wasn’t from the years 1948 to 1967, when Jordan controlled it. Funny, that. And it’s not even mentioned in the Koran. Only when the Jews managed to take control over what used to be the Jewish part of Jerusalem did the Muslim world suddenly care. Temple Mount. There first. There last. They’ll never get it back. Not even Olmert is that stupid.
