UN follies

File this under “How could they tell?” (I missed it two weeks ago, but it must now be told.) The UN was evacuated due to a foul stench.

U.N. security officials evacuated the buildings where the Security Council and the General Assembly were to meet Tuesday because of a strong odor caused by a sewage problem.

This assumes that there are people with brains at the UN: I swear I’m not making up the name of this holiday. It’s the Third Annual Brain Education Day. And it’s a Mike Bloomberg idea! Woot! The guy can’t get New York City streets plowed, but he’s declaring Brain Education Day. Because we totally have to educate those brains, man.

Lebanon to UN: Israel found the gas field, but it’s OURS! OURS! OURS! Of course they’re complaining to the UN. Do you expect them to actually let Israel profit from its own work when by throwing a tantrum they can get the UN to declare an investigation to make sure that Israel isn’t stealing “Lebanese” resources?

War is peace; bad is good: Another AP mis-analysis

The AP lowers the bar and calls out the Orwellian language for this profile of how Mohammed Dahlan, terrorist, has become Mohammed Dahlan, the last, best hope for the PA. In the article, we learn that a) Mahmoud Abbas is thin-skinned; b) the West ignores the quaint Arab tradition of “one man, one vote, one time” in the interests of “the peace process”; c) Abbas is less tolerant because the peace process has stalled (thereby implicitly blaming Israel for Abbas’ intransigence); and d) the world has a really bad understanding of corruption and nonviolence:

And while Abbas is not nearly as popular or authoritative as his predecessor Yasser Arafat, he has considerable support worldwide because he is seen as running a much cleaner government and is more convincingly committed to nonviolence.

And by the way, that’s Israel’s fault, too.

In a reflection of the complex wider considerations at play, Abbas has cracked down most publicly on those who – unlike Dahlan – criticize his decision to negotiate with Israel.

In August, dozens of men believed to be plainclothes security officers broke up a gathering of activists who opposed his decision to enter peace talks, which began the following month and have since stalled. Uniformed officers also waited outside to question the activists as they left.

Later, a when a smaller Palestinian faction stopped attending meetings of the Palestine Liberation Organization to protest Abbas’ decision to enter talks, he cut off the group’s monthly stipend.

Missing from this analysis: The fact that while Abbas negotiates, or pretends to negotiate with Israel, he receives billions of dollars from the suckers in the EU and U.S. (among others). If his rivals truly stopped him from negotiating at all, the money would ultimately dry up—at least until he could blame it on Israel (cf.: Settlement freeze, Obama Administration).

It still astonishes me—although it really shouldn’t—at how low the bar is set for thugs, dictators, kleptocrats, human rights abusers, thieves, and tyrants—who happen to be Arab or Muslim leaders. Compare that with, say, the standard for Republican leaders.

Shyeah.

Your morning briefs

Gaza/Hamastan ERA watch: The women in Gaza are not allowed to dance with men, but they’re allowed to blow themselves up in mixed company. Now that’s progress!

Yes, and that’s the purpose of a blockade: Wikileaks released cables of Israel telling U.S. diplomats that Israel was planning to bring Gaza’s economy to the brink of ruin in order to starve out Hamas. This, of course, is what passes for “news” in the anti-Israel crowd. Um. Keen grasp of the obvious award, I think.

What have they got against Paul McCartney? Israeli leftist groups are up in arms against a proposed bill that would investigate where their funding comes from. They’re calling it “McCarthyism.” Here’s the thing: There actually were Communists in America, working against American interests, during the McCarthy era. So are the lefty groups in Israel saying that they’re taking foreign money for anti-Israel purposes?

Yet another unreported attack on Israel: It is not news when Arabs fire rockets from Gaza into Israel. It is only news when Israel fires back. Just as it isn’t news when Israelis are hurt, but 1500 wire stories go out if an IDF soldier causes a Palestinian to stub a toe. Israeli Double Standard Time rules are in effect.

Tuesday NorVA briefs

Those wascally Iswaelies! Say, you know the suicide bombing that murdered 22 Christians Copts and wounded dozens more? Guess who a group of Egyptian lawyers blames for the bombing? That’s right: The Mossad. Sure. Because the world has seen hundreds and hundreds of Jewish suicide bombers, who have murdered thousands of people. Oh. Wait. Those are Muslim suicide bombers. My bad. Effing. Batshit. Crazy. That is what these lawyers are. How scary is it that these are the more educated among the Egyptians, and they’re putting out crap like this?

Holy Leviathan, Batman! Ha’aretz is reporting that the Leviathan gas field may be worth $90 billion. The last I heard, it was half that. This thing keeps growing, and growing, and may I say: Mazel tov! May Leviathan double in size again and again! This is the best news Israel has had in decades, and it may make some major changes in the way other nations treat the Jewish state.

Oh, stop it. Everyone knows it’s Islamophobia that’s on the rise, not anti-Semitism! New York hate crime statistics are out, and who’s the star of the show? Why, that would be us Jews. Let’s compare the anti-Muslim attack numbers with the ones against Jews: There were eleven anti-Muslim attacks—up from eight last year. The number for Jews? 251, up from 219 last year. That’s one less than the total for attacks on blacks, whites, gays, and Muslims. So yeah, the next time the Ground Zero Imam cries “Islamophobia,” feel free to burst into laughter. He deserves it.

Brits supplying more terrorists to Israel: Okay, maybe it’s a trifle unfair to blame Britain for two more Israeli Arabs arrested in the plot to send a missile into a soccer match, and yet—these are not the first British-affiliated terrorists in Israel. Unfortunately, the one that blew up Mike’s Place wasn’t stopped. These British Consulate workers were. Way to screen your employees, dudes!

CSM: Freedom of religion equals lack of democracy

The Christian Science Monitor, never a friend to Israel, is contributing to the delegitimization of Israel by asking whether or not Israel is a democracy. The premise for this article, which is included in the CSM’s year-end list section, uses spurious examples of actions by individuals and one proposed law to present a provably false case that Israel is cracking down on Arab citizens’ rights. Note the scary headline and subhead:

Is Israel a democracy?
Five actions in 2010 that fueled the debate.

The CSM starts with a false premise: That letters and opinions by religious Jews are affecting Arab rights. The article doesn’t actuallly state what rights are being “challenged,” nor does it come up with a single concrete instance of Arabs’ rights being violated, but that didn’t stop them from running a five-part list of how we must question Israel’s value as a democratic state. This is extremely important, because it is another chip in the wall of Israel’s legitimacy by a mainstream media publication.

Recent actions by Israel’s religious and right-wing communities have challenged the rights of the country’s growing Arab minority.

Using this false premise, the CSM presents religious rulings as something that affect Israel’s democratic nature. The tie-in? Well, some religious Jews don’t want their daughters to date Arabs, or their neighbors to rent or sell to Arabs. Clearly, the democratic character of Israel is at stake, because it’s not like any other Israelis objected to the above, and there was a broad outcry to turn these letters and religious rulings into law.

Oh. Wait. They did.

Still, the CSM breathlessly proclaims that actions such as a letter signed by some rabbis’ wives telling Jewish girls not to date Arabs, is a reason to question whether Israeli is a democracy. The fact that they contradict themselves right in their explanation didn’t stop this article from being published:

The people responsible for the letter say that its goal is to prevent assimilation and romantic relationships between Jewish women and Arab men, according to Ynet News. The letter was distributed by an organization named Lehava, which works against intermarriage between Jews and non-Jews.

The problem is religious, not racist. If my son were to decide to marry an Arab woman who converted, I wouldn’t have a problem with that,” said Bentzi Gopstein, a senior member of Lehava, according to Ynet.

In sum, we have a religious group freely expressing a religious opinion—the very bedrock of a democratic state—used as evidence that Israel is leaning undemocratic.

Next:

Earlier this month, dozens of rabbis from all over Israel signed a religious ruling that forbids Jews from renting or selling real estate to Arabs.

This letter was widely condemned in Israel. These rabbis are not members of the Israeli parliament and have no ability to affect the laws of the nation. But to the CSM, this is another sign that Israel’s democracy must be questioned. And just in case you think that they’re exaggerating the rabbinic influence, well, they’ve got that covered. They minimize the condemnations and exaggerate the rabbis’ influence:

Although several Jewish and Israeli institutions have come out against the letter – such as Yad Vashem, the Israeli Holocaust museum authority – the number of prominent rabbis in Israel who have condemned it has been comparatively small. Many of the rabbis that signed the letter are state-employed municipal chief rabbis.

Wow, “state-employed municipal chief rabbis”—oooh, that sounds really official. You know who else is a state-employed municipal official? The guy from VDOT who plows the highway in my county. I sure hope he doesn’t start issuing letters about white Virginians not renting to black Virginians, or vice-versa, because that would totally prove that Virginia is a racist state.

None of the “state-employed municipal chief rabbis” is a member of the Knesset, and none has the ability to affect Israeli law. Nevertheless, the CSM insists this is another reason to question Israel’s commitment to democracy.

Case number three:

In Safed, a religious town in northern Israel, Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu called on residents not to rent or sell real estate to Arab students studying at the local college. The request was later formalized into a religious ruling, the Monitor reported.

So, have we come up with a government edict restricting Arabs rights yet?

Nope. Strike three. So far, we have nothing more than a bunch of religious Jews making rulings that people can (and have) ignore, mock, criticize, follow, or tune out. One of the rabbis is being investigated by the government for incitement. Clearly, Israel’s democracy is wavering, and its Arab minority is in grave danger.

But wait! The CSM has found a case that actually involves the Israeli government!

In October, the Israeli cabinet approved a bill that will require even non-Jews who wish to become Israeli citizens to pledge allegiance to Israel as a Jewish state. There was already a mandatory oath of loyalty – as is the norm in many countries – but now it will be amended to include the phrase “Jewish and democratic state,” the Monitor reported.

The proposed law would have little practical impact, because there are few non-Jews seeking citizenship, but it is symbolic of an effort to delegitimize Arab Israeli citizens, some say.

We have a law that is in the bill stage. But even if it does become law, having new citizens of the state of Israel declare loyalty to a “Jewish and democratic state”—not current citizens, not Arabs only, but immigrants who want to become citizens of the state of Israel—is not anti-democratic. The law is not forcing non-Jews to convert. It is stating that they must declare their loyalty to the State of Israel, the only Jewish-majority state in the entire world, as a Jewish state. The horrors!

Strike four. Go for five? Hold onto your hats for this evidence that Israel is becoming less of a democracy: The government banned textbooks teaching the Palestinian version of Israel’s independence (known by them as the “nakba,” or catastrophe).

I was wrong. Israel is so totally heading down the road to authoritarianism, or something dark, dank, and dangerous. Holy cow, call out the UN Human Rights Committee! Someone get Richard Goldstone on the phone! OMG, Israel’s no longer a democracy!

You know, if you’re going to accuse Israel of losing its democratic values, you really need to include examples of government oppression, laws restricting rights, and officials cracking down on individual freedoms. If you can supply none of the above, you’re just blowing smoke. And making yourself a laughingstock here at Yourish.com.

But all mockery aside: This is how delegitimization works—one stupid article at a time, that people will cut and paste and quote for years to come as proof that Israel is taking away Arab citizens’ rights, even though the article proves no such thing—because people will take the article at face value, and do no critical thinking, no investigation, and no further research.

So I’ll do it for them. And you can link to this when some moron tries to tell you that Israel is cracking down on minority rights because a few religious Jews made their opinions known on Jewish religious matters.

Human rights for me, but not for thee

In a pretty sickening post in Comment is Free, Stephen Kinzer, a former journalist, is decrying human rights organizations for being—get this—imperialists. (Via Hot Air.) Why? Because we insist there is a universal definition of human rights. And because this is a “Western” opinion.

Human Rights Watch is hardly the only offender. There are a host of others, ranging from Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders to the Carr Centre for Human Rights at Harvard and the pitifully misled “anti-genocide” movement. All promote an absolutist view of human rights permeated by modern western ideas that westerners mistakenly call “universal”. In some cases, their work, far from saving lives, actually causes more death, more repression, more brutality and an absolute weakening of human rights.

Note the bolded sentence. Kinzer delineates that theory, using Darfur as his example. It is the most despicable argument I have ever heard.

The actions of human rights do-gooders is craziest in Darfur, where they show themselves not only dangerously naive but also unwilling to learn lessons from their past misjudgments. By their well-intentioned activism, they have given murderous rebel militias – not only in Darfur but around the world – the idea that even if they have no hope of military victory, they can mobilise useful idiots around the world to take up their cause, and thereby win in the court of public opinion what they cannot win on the battlefield. The best way to do this is to provoke massacres by the other side, which Darfur rebels have dome[sic] quite successfully and remorselessly.

Got it? The massacres are no longer the fault of those who are murdering people by the thousands. They are on the heads of the “rebels” who are causing their enemies to slaughter them—all so that they can attract human rights activists to their cause and get what they want. The Islamic angle? Non-existent. The mass rapes and murders of black Africans by Arabs? Inconsequential. The entire problem in Darfur can be placed on the backs of those causing the Janjaweed to rape and murder.

This is a man of no morals whatsoever. Comment is free, all right, and his opinion isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on.

And then there’s this:

For many years as a foreign correspondent, I not only worked alongside human rights advocates, but considered myself one of them. To defend the rights of those who have none was the reason I became a journalist in the first place.

Can we please stop pretending that there is any such thing as an objective media? At the very least, can we stop pretending that only Fox New holds a bias?

Of course not. The narrative is written by—that’s right—the biased media, of which this tool used to be a part.

If it’s Friday, this must be the anti-Israel narrative in Bilin

Palestinians, Israeli peaceniks, and various anti-Israel internationals attended their weekly riot against the separation barrier in Bilin. Tear gas was used. A Palestinian woman died a day later, and the media are using this as yet another example of the horrible, horrible Israelis who ruthlessly and aimlessly use overwhelming amounts of force on “peaceful” protesters, and kill them. At least, that’s the narrative. Watch AP slant the story so much as to make it look like Israel is making shit up, even when supplying photographic evidence of the violence of the “protesters”.

The military described Friday’s protest as a “violent and illegal riot” and released photographs it identified as being from the demonstration showing Palestinian youths using slingshots and a firebomb against troops. The military said it was investigating Abu Rahmeh’s death but had not been allowed to see the Palestinian medical reports.

Why the words “it identfied as being”? Why not just “released photographs from the demonstration”? Because this way, the AP narrative continues that evidence from Israel is not to be trusted. Whose evidence do they trust? Guess.

Michael Sfard, the Israeli lawyer representing the woman’s family, said troops used “incredible quantities of gas” at the protest, a weekly event that often deteriorates into violent clashes between protesters and soldiers.

Right. Quote uncritically the anti-Israel side. Put all kinds of qualifiers when describing Israel evidence that there was, indeed, a violent riot, just as there is every week–not “often.” And, of course, let’s tally up the Palestinian deaths, and ignore all Israeli casualties that come out of the riots. A border guard was blinded by a “protester”? BFD, he should have ducked from the rocks that are “often” thrown. Let’s see, broken leg, broken arm, injuries, injuries, injuries… no, I don’t see any reason whatsoever why the IDF always has to use force during the weekly Bilin “protests.” And here is a picture of the stones used to injure the soldiers. (Also charges that Palestinians were harmed by the tear gas.)

Abu Rahmeh’s brother, Bassem Abu Rahmeh, was killed at a similar demonstration in 2009 after being hit by an Israeli tear gas canister, becoming the 17th Palestinian to die at barrier protests since 2004.

They aren’t protests, and they aren’t peaceful. They are weekly riots against Israeli soldiers, disguised as riots against the security fence. But of course, the narrative must continue its mission: Demonize, demonize, demonize Israel.

A new year, a new boilerplate

After the latest attacks on Egypt’s Coptic Christians, the AP has decided that the old boilerplate no longer holds.

Coptic Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt’s population of 80 million. They complain frequently of discrimination, though they generally live in peace with the Muslim majority despite occasional flare-ups of violence, especially over limits on church building.

I guess a suicide bombing killing 21 and wounding 80 after a New Year’s mass made them decided that the “occasional flare-ups of violence” needs to be retired.

Egypt has seen a string of attacks on Christians in recent years, most notably, in January 2009, when seven Christians were killed in a drive-by shooting on a church in southern Egypt during celebrations for the Orthodox Coptic Christmas.

Christians, mainly Orthodox Copts, are believed to make up about 10 percent of Egypt’s mainly Muslim population of nearly 80 million people, and they have grown increasingly vocal in complaints about discrimination.

But of course, this being the AP, they have to “balance” the constant stream of Muslim attacks on Christians with tales of Christian violence.

In November, hundreds of Christians rioted in the capital, Cairo, smashing cars and windows after police violently stopped the construction of a church. The rare outbreak of Christian unrest in the capital left one person dead.

So, what, Christians rioted and murdered Muslims over the canceling of a church? Uh, no.

One person died and 68 others were injured when security forces halted construction on a church citing violations of building permits.

Angry Christians hurled stones while riot police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets near the church and later in clashes outside the governor’s office.

Oh, the cops killed the Christian, not the other way around. Yeah, that makes them just as violent as the Muslims murdering them by the dozens. In church.

It’s all about the balance, you see. The AP starts the new year off the same way it ended the old: Not objective, telling its own narrative, not really informing. Happy new year, AP!

Silly end-of-revolution briefs

Whew! Western movies dodged the bullet: Governor Bill Richardson will not pardon Billy the Kid, so we can continue to have westerns made about him that have him shootin’ and killin’ and being an all-around bad guy. I’d tell you what crimes he committed, but then I would have had to read the article, and frankly, I don’t care enough. I just thought it was hilarious that a governor was actually considering pardoning him. (Cue the outraged historian explaining my ignorance to me in 3, 2….)

British tabloids are awesome: Click here and scroll down to see the side-by-side picture of who the editors think Kim Kardashian looks like with her new hairdo. And I got here by following a Hot Air link to this story about a 94-year-old father. Good to know the kid will lose his daddy before he hits double digits. Selfish bastard. (By the way, I have no freaking clue who Kardashian is. Something about a TV show that I’ve never watched, and will never watch.)

It’s come to this: CNN has an article that gives you a how-to guide for New Year’s Eve—via apps for your phone. Insert standard intergenerational rant here.

Run for your life! An actress who was injured in the accident-plagued Spider-Man musical on Broadway (um—what?) is quitting. Yeah, I’d quit, too, because it sure seems like the people who put that show together hired the Three Stooges to direct their stunts. ($292.50 a pop for some seats? And they wonder why nobody goes to Broadway shows anymore? Geez.)

The completion of a revolution around the sun briefs

The Palestinians, encouraged by Obama’s ridiculous emphasis on settlement freezes for the past two years, are now saying they’re tailoring the UN Security Council Resolution specifically to U.S. demands on Israel.

“We drafted it using the same words that Secretary Clinton is using and so we don’t see why the U.S. would veto it,” Abbas said.

Execllent work, Obama! You’re really bringing the two sides closer than ever to forging a true peace in the middle east! Too bad you can’t put that genie back in the bottle, hey? Of course, the real question is: Will Obama screw Israel? The State Department says the resolution is a no-go—for now.

Israeli deterrence: It works. 2010 has the fewest number of deaths by terrorism in a decade. The barrier is working. Operation Cast Lead worked. The IDF arresting terrorists is working. Enlisting Palestinian spies is working. You know what’s not working? The anti-Israel side trying to stop Israel from protecting her citizens. And here’s a number you never see in an AP boilerplate:

According to the data, terror attacks have claimed the lives of 1,187 Israelis in the past decade; 8,050 Israelis were injured in terror attacks over the past 10 years.

The overwhelming majority were civilians.

Cry me a river: Former president Moshe Katsav is depressed over his rape conviction. Let’s see, he shamed himself and his country, gave the Jew-haters another story to tarnish all Jews with (the Israel-haters are already referring to it in comments threads on newspapers, using it as an example of corrupt Israeli politicians), and, oh yeah, he raped at least one woman. Hey, Katsav: Suck it up, shut up, go to jail, and make amends, and in ten years, maybe we’ll care if you’re depressed or not. Well, actually, no, I won’t care in ten years, either.

New Year’s Eve eve brief briefs

(I had fun making up that title.)

It isn’t racism if it’s anti-Semitism: I must have missed this a couple of weeks ago, but once again, proof that Europe isn’t interested in protecting Jews (so why should we believe the EU when they say that they’ll protect Israel?). At least this time, they’re just telling Jews to leave instead of stuffing them into cattle cars and sending them to death camps. And why should Jews leave? Because Dutch Muslims will continue to persecute them and the government won’t protect them. And why won’t the government protect them? Because they’re being stirred up by anti-Israel sentiments and, of course, the false narrative of Evil Israel vs. Pali Pureheart. All Jews are responsible for Israel’s actions, but only terrorists are responsible for Muslim terrorism. Say, kids, what time is it? That’s right, it’s Israeli Double Standard Time! But don’t worry, it only occurs on days that end with a “y.”

Obama foreign policy: Dumb, dumber, dumbest. President Obama has restored diplomatic relations with Syria, in effect, by appointing an ambassador after a six-year absence. Why was there no ambassador? Hm, let’s think. Syria has actively aided Iraqi terrorists against American forces, is allying with Iran, arming Hamas and Hezbollah, and built an illicit nuclear plant to make nuclear weapons. Yep, we should totally reward them by restoring an ambassadorship. Because it’s not like they’re a terrorist state or anything like that. Oh. Wait. To the argument that we can affect Syria more now because we’ll have an ambassador, I respond: BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Yes, and they’re also going to stop wearing stupid masks in pictures: Ha’aretz says that PIJ will stop firing rockets into Israel. Meryl says: Seriously? Ha’aretz knows that every one of these “promises” has a shorter expiration date than cotton candy in the rain.

However, he said, the agreement to halt the rocket attacks was only “temporary” and was “linked to the situation on the ground.”

Translation: “Look! A Zionist soldier is glaring at me! Ahmed, launch a rocket!”

It’s the Mad Mahmoudmobile! Let’s buy it! Seriously? Ahmadinejad is putting his 33-year-old Peugot up for auction. Because so many people care about his car? Egotist much? (Oh, if he’d only put it up on eBay. The comments he’d bring.)

Wednesday briefs

But it’s not Israel, so no one cares: The human rights group, EveryOne, has documented the kidnapping, ransom, and torture by Hamas of Eritrean refugees fleeing to Israel. This will be yet another human rights atrocity overlooked by the UNHRC, since Israelis aren’t involved.

Did you know? Three out of four Israelis are Jewish. How cool would it be to be in Israel for a major Jewish holiday? One of these days I’m going to make it for just that. I think I’ll try to come for one of the happy ones, though. Forget Yom Kippur.

Way to go, Stuxnet! The Iranian nuclear threat has receded somewhat, according to new data from Israel. They’re now three years away from getting a bomb. That’s the good news. The bad news? They’re still trying. And gee, the AP boilerplate has changed to reflect reality, at least in this article:

Israel considers Iran a strategic threat because of its nuclear program, missile capability and frequent references by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the destruction of Israel.

But wait! What’s this? The last paragraph in the same article:

Israel considers Iran its most dangerous enemy because of its nuclear program, missiles and calls for Israel’s destruction. Iran also supports the anti-Israel Hamas and Hezbollah militant groups.

Two boilerplates for the price of one!

Awesome if true: A Syrian arrested as an Israeli spy says the senior officer in charge of Syria’s nuclear program was a spy for the Mossad. Ah, the culture of bribery—way to make it work for you! Of course, that would explain how Israel knew so much about the Syrian nuclear plant before it was bombed.

More members of Religion of Peace™ peacefully plotting to kill infidels: Five terrorists were arrested before they could murder staffers at a Danish newspaper, probably the one that published the Mohammed cartoons. And they were drawn from a wide variety of Islamists: Tunisia, Iraq, and Lebanon were represented.

Israeli Double Standard Time: Funny, I don’t remember international coverage of the Palestinians declaring the death penalty for anyone who sells land to Jews. I don’t remember the international coverage of the Palestinians constantly insisting that not a single Jew will be allowed to live in the future state of Palestine. And yet, we now have international coverage of a letter from a group of rabbis’ wives urging Israeli women not to date Arabs. Yep. If it’s Jews, it’s news.

Three days left

You’ve got three days left to get your charitable donations on your 2010 income taxes. Now’s a good time to choose your charities and donate your extra money.

I put my money where my mouth is and sent out checks to more than half a dozen organizations, including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and various Jewish charities. If you like reading Barry Rubin’s excellent reports, consider donating to the GLORIA Center, which sponsors him. Details on the top of Barry’s posts.

I also bought a subscription to Reason and will be picking one up for Commentary. Not tax-deductible, but I’ve been reading their blogs for free for ages, so it’s time to kick in some money. Those two magazines are an extremely welcome change from the mainstream media.

How far has Meryl come in the last nine years? I’m probably going to subscribe to NRO and the Weekly Standard, too. I subscribed to NRO years ago, when Buckley was editing it. I wanted to read the other side’s opinions. I cancelled it after about three issues. I just couldn’t take conservatives in my 20s.

Times change.

Anyway, give what you can, to whomever you think deserves it.
