Three days left

You’ve got three days left to get your charitable donations on your 2010 income taxes. Now’s a good time to choose your charities and donate your extra money.

I put my money where my mouth is and sent out checks to more than half a dozen organizations, including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and various Jewish charities. If you like reading Barry Rubin’s excellent reports, consider donating to the GLORIA Center, which sponsors him. Details on the top of Barry’s posts.

I also bought a subscription to Reason and will be picking one up for Commentary. Not tax-deductible, but I’ve been reading their blogs for free for ages, so it’s time to kick in some money. Those two magazines are an extremely welcome change from the mainstream media.

How far has Meryl come in the last nine years? I’m probably going to subscribe to NRO and the Weekly Standard, too. I subscribed to NRO years ago, when Buckley was editing it. I wanted to read the other side’s opinions. I cancelled it after about three issues. I just couldn’t take conservatives in my 20s.

Times change.

Anyway, give what you can, to whomever you think deserves it.

Have you heard? Commentary merged with Dissent – they call themselves Dysentery. (Woody Allen)

Times change indeed, Meryl. I let my decades-long subscription to The New Republic lapse and I’m now getting the Weekly Standard. Jay Goldberg quoted me in NR on line once, and whereas at one time I would have been a bit embarrassed to have anyone know I read National Review, now I was a bit miffed that he didn’t quote me by name.

And don’t get me started on what happened to The Sporting News.
