US Opposes International Probe

While I have certainly been critical of the way that the Obama administration has dealt with Israel related issues in the past, I must say that the administration’s response to this crisis has been largely on the mark. If I’m going to criticize, when criticism is due, I should praise when praise is due. So first of all, no one spoke off the cuff and condemned Israel without waiting for the facts. Second, while seemingly everyone else was jumping on the “let’s slam Israel” bandwagon, the US stood by for hours. I can only imagine the ferocity of pressure from a multiplicity of sources that was aimed at the administration today to act, much less to speak harshly, against Israel. With that in mind, the US calm and measured response to proposals at the UN is all the more appreciated.

As reported by the JPost http://www.jpost.com/Headlines/Article.aspx?id=177062:

US deputy ambassador to the UN Alejandro Wolff did not support the Turkish and Arab demand for an independent international probe at the special UN Security Council session Monday overnight, saying: “We expect a credible and transparent investigation and strongly urge the Israeli government to investigate the incident fully.”

In other words, “We believe Israel and support Israel.” The statement didn’t say that in so many words, but, with this problematic of a situation, opposing UNSC condemnation was significant as was opposition to an “independent international probe” which certainly would have found Israel guilty regardless of the facts and evidence. In this case, the Obama administration responded as a friend of Israel. Now, as for the investigation, might Israel inquire of itself why it had no better plan to deal with hostile protesters? If it were not for expertly trained commandos, there could easily have been dead or captured IDF soldiers in addition to many more dead violent protesters. More, a question from Meryl, why doesn’t Israel have all of its soldiers wear helmet cams during this type of raid when the media is watching? We can only have grainy helicopter video?

Passion and instinct vs. reason and wisdom

I gotta say that “passion and instinct” should win every time. (Besides, “passion and instinct” always gets the girl.)

I also think that the “reason and wisdom” is overrated. I mean in middle of battle Capt. Reason and Wisdom shouts, “Fire at Will.” Huh? Why’d he take out his first officer at critical moments?

Tikkun and World Media

Shalom All,

I find it simply outrageous that Tikkun and other peace organizations have the gall to call those bloodthirsty attempted murderers who launched into the Israeli soldiers with metal clubs and knives “peace activists.” They truly should be termed “Turkish radical Pro-Palestinian activists attempting to aid and abet Hamas in its ongoing war against Israel and the Jews,” but how much sympathy would that get them from the world media? Then again, most of the international media would not find it problematic if Israeli soldiers were killed and a ship laden with weaponry designed to murder Israeli civilians landed in Gaza freely.

Summary of the Events on the Free Gaza Flotilla

Here’s the summary of the Flotilla situation that I have pieced together:

Please watch the video of the soldiers being attacked IMMEDIATELY upon boarding Mavi Marmara by “non-violent” protesters.

1. The Free Gaza Movement organized the flotilla but did not control all of the ships and it could not vouch for the contents of the ships or necessarily the activists on board each ship. The ostensible leader of the flotilla said that Israel would have to stop them by force.

2. The flotilla was supposed to be a non-violent protest and its passengers non-violent protesters. This proved horribly untrue on ONE of the ships, the Mavi Marmara. NO SIMILAR VIOLENCE TOOK PLACE ON ANY OTHER VESSEL.

3. The Mavi Marmara was controlled by the IHH, a Turkish organization that is known for outspoken support of Hamas and terrorism against Israel.

4. At least several passengers on the Marmara were NOT non-violent protesters but VIOLENT ones and PLANNED TO USE VIOLENCE if boarded. Significant amounts of weaponry were readied on the ship designed to attempt to repel an assault at a minimum or to capture or kill members of an IDF boarding party.

5. The moment IDF soldiers boarded the Marmara, if not before, they came under attack by numerous people with metal bars, boards, and evidently knives as seen clearly in the video at the link provided above. IDF soldiers did NOT “immediately open fire with bullets on civilians” as reported by the Free Gaza movement, though they may have used the paint ball guns they carried.

6. No similar violence occurred on any other ship boarded by the Israelis which may have been the result of the effectiveness of the use of anti-piracy techniques.

7. It appears that at least some of the vessels may have employed anti-piracy techniques against the Israelis which escalated the situation significantly as I wrote about here. The video of the use of anti-piracy techniques by at least one ship is telling.
The use of anti-piracy techniques resulted in the incapacitation of at least two soldiers on the Mavi Marmara and turned the seizure of the ship into a rescue mission with soldiers in a life threatening situation in which the use of stronger force unfortunately became necessary.

8. The IDF soldiers had riot suppression gear including paint guns as their primary means of response. They also carried handguns, but no heavier weaponry.

9. With at least two soldiers incapacitated by the mob on the Marmara immediately and at least one handgun taken from a soldier and turned against other soldiers, the situation escalated and soldiers were given permission to use live fire if necessary, but to shoot to incapacitate, to target legs. The IDF says that two soldiers were shot PRIOR to the approval of the use of live fire in defense by the IDF possibly with a gun seized from one of the incapacitated soldiers.

10. There was no chance to withdraw to de-escalate the situation because IDF soldiers were in mortal danger and at the time possibly on the verge of death, “lynching,” as one authority reported.

11. It is unclear exactly how the deaths of those who died occurred. They could have been killed deliberately in self defense, accidentally by stray fire in close quarters, or accidentally by the activists themselves attempting to fire on Israeli soldiers. The IDF reports the accurate death total as NINE, mostly from Turkey.

12. It is clear that the IDF had no intention of using more than a minimal level of violence, crowd control, against the flotilla and that the major violence was instigated by the passengers on board the Marmara who used anti-piracy techniques that escalated the situation.

13. It is possible that the passengers anticipated the IDF assault on the ship by relatively weakly armed soldiers and intended to capture and hold Israeli soldiers as hostages. Regardless, whatever was intended by the level of resistance on board the Marmara failed because of the training of the IDF soldiers who unfortunately for the protesters responded appropriately and immediately.

14. All of the ships involved in the flotilla were forewarned that Israel would be stopping the ships. That the timing of the interdiction was earlier than expected cannot possibly have resulted in a radical alteration of the plan of the activists to switch from non-violent resistance to violent resistance. It seems that anti-piracy efforts were intended to prevent the seizure of the ships.

15. There are those who argue that the raid took place in international waters and therefore violated international law. The relevant international law, however, supports Israel’s position. According to The San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea, 12 June 1994

SECTION V : NEUTRAL MERCHANT VESSELS AND CIVIL AIRCRAFT
Neutral merchant vessels
67. Merchant vessels flying the flag of neutral States may not be attacked unless they:
(a) are believed on reasonable grounds to be carrying contraband or breaching a blockade, and after prior warning they intentionally and clearly refuse to stop, or intentionally and clearly resist visit, search or capture;

16. There is no little bit of international condemnation of Israel on this issue. Much of it is to appease Turkey and the Arab League. However, should the United States fail to defend Israel on its actions during this event, it will encourage future and much more dangerous encounters in the future.
17. The US should say, “Upon obtaining a clear understanding of what occurred on board the Marmara, the United States feels that the response of Israeli soldiers to a life threatening situation was both appropriate and proportional and that had it not been so many more lives would have been lost. The extreme violence on board the ship theoretically carrying non-violent protesters was instigated by the passengers, not by the soldiers who boarded out of a legitimate concern for Israel’s security. The history of weapons smuggling by Hamas gave Israel every necessary concern to prevent these ships from reaching land. Without peace, both sides face a bleak future.”

More on the flotilla attack

On the day before the IDF boarded the ship, the “peace activists” on board the Marmara chanted the jihadi slogan to kill all Jews.

“[Remember] Khaibar, Khaibar, oh Jews! The army of Muhammad will return!”

Khaibar is the name of the last Jewish village defeated by Muhammad’s army in 628. Many Jews were killed in that battle, which marked the end of Jewish presence in Arabia. There are Muslims who see that as a precursor to future wars against Jews. At gatherings and rallies of extremists, this chant is often heard as a threat to Jews to expect to be defeated and killed again by Muslims.

Al-Jazeera also interviewed a woman who said that the flotilla participants’ goal was “one of two happy endings: either Martyrdom or reaching Gaza.”

These were not “peace activists.” These were not even civilians. These were terrorists with a purpose. And they achieved it. Israel is suffering its worst public relations disaster since the supposed bombing of a family on a Gaza beach—which turned out to be a Hamas-caused explosion, but the world never, ever updated its information on that.

The delegitimization of Israel continues at breakneck speed.

More video of the IDF being attacked by the “peaceful” protestors.

Jameel is live-blogging. He reports word that there are Hamas terrorists hiding on the ship that attacked the IDF. Gee. What a surprise.

JPost reports that the “activists” were lynch mobs trying to kill soldiers. So does Ha’aretz.

An eyewitness account of “A Brutal Ambush at Sea.”

Seven soldiers and 34 “activists” are in Israeli hospitals. One of the wounded (not in hospital) was Sheikh Raed Salah, a known fomentor of riots. Gee, such a shock that he was wounded. Such a peaceful man.

Israeli report on the flotilla attack

An Israeli reporter on the attack by the “activists” the AP probably won’t give you:

Our Navy commandoes fell right into the hands of the Gaza mission members. A few minutes before the takeover attempt aboard the Marmara got underway, the operation commander was told that 20 people were waiting on the deck where a helicopter was to deploy the first team of the elite Flotilla 13 unit. The original plan was to disembark on the top deck, and from there rush to the vessel’s bridge and order the Marmara’s captain to stop.

Officials estimated that passengers will show slight resistance, and possibly minor violence; for that reason, the operation’s commander decided to bring the helicopter directly above the top deck. The first rope that soldiers used in order to descend down to the ship was wrested away by activists, most of them Turks, and tied to an antenna with the hopes of bringing the chopper down. However, Flotilla 13 fighters decided to carry on.

Navy commandoes slid down to the vessel one by one, yet then the unexpected occurred: The passengers that awaited them on the deck pulled out bats, clubs, and slingshots with glass marbles, assaulting each soldier as he disembarked. The fighters were nabbed one by one and were beaten up badly, yet they attempted to fight back.

However, to their misfortune, they were only equipped with paintball rifles used to disperse minor protests, such as the ones held in Bilin. The paintballs obviously made no impression on the activists, who kept on beating the troops up and even attempted to wrest away their weapons.

One soldier who came to the aid of a comrade was captured by the rioters and sustained severe blows. The commandoes were equipped with handguns but were told they should only use them in the face of life-threatening situations. When they came down from the chopper, they kept on shouting to each other “don’t shoot, don’t shoot,” even though they sustained numerous blows.

Read it all.

Behind the “peace” flotilla attack

The anti-Israel narrative is working furiously in the aftermath of the fight on the Turkish ferry Mavi Marmara. Soldiers rappelling down were immediately beaten and attacked by the “peace protesters” (video at the link). “Activists” grabbed arms from the soldiers and fired at them. The soldiers fired back. Ten of the people on that ship are dead. Five other ships were seized without injury. But nobody, of course, focuses on that fact—only on the fact that Israel seized the ship in international waters (a bonehead move, in my opinion) and killed ten passengers.

Is anyone surprised at this outcome? All along, the flotilla representatives threatened that they would respond with force.

“We fully intend to go to Gaza regardless of any intimidation or threats of violence against us,” Arraf said. “They are going to have to forcefully stop us.”

They weren’t empty promises. Watch that video. The soldier was attacked by a mob wielding metal pipes the second his feet reached the deck. From Ynet:

“In light of the life-threatening situation, the soldiers were forced to use crowd dispersal means and firearms,” he said, adding that some of the casualties were killed by firearms. According to Barak, 10 soldiers were injured in the incident, some from firearms and some from cold arms.

Of course, the anti-Israel media narrative downplays the threats by the organization, the violence against Israelis, and slaps the label “civilian” on the attackers, even though we don’t know if they were civilians or members of Hamas whose job was to be on the ship and do exactly what they did—cause an international incident to make Israel look horrible. This is part of the AP lead. the downplaying of the violence against the soldiers and the

Israel said the forces encountered unexpected resistance as they boarded the vessels. Dozens of passengers and at least five Israeli soldiers were wounded in the confrontation in international waters.

The lead changed as the story unfolded. AP dropped this from an earlier version:

The army says the soldiers were attacked with knives and clubs as they boarded the six vessels Monday.

And buried the information halfway through the main report now making its way across the world media:

The Israeli military said troops only opened fire after encountering unexpected resistance from the activists. Activists attacked troops with knives and iron rods, and opened fire with two pistols seized from the forces.

A total of five soldiers were wounded, two seriously, including at least one hit by live fire, the army said. Two of the dead activists had fired at soldiers with pistols, the army said.

“They planned this attack,” said Israeli military spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovitch. “Our soldiers were injured from these knives and sharp metal objects … as well as from live fire.”

The video proves it. Soldiers were attacked the moment they boarded the ship. These were not innocent “civilians.” This was a planned attack.

Who was behind that ship? The Turkish organization IHH, which has ties with terrorists. The Wikipedia entry says that only one source has claimed this, and yet, the ship itself left to a rousing chant of “Kill the Jews” and calls for “intifada” while waving Palestinian flags. Habibi at Harry’s Place found more evidence of the IHH support for terrorism (I can’t get the Turkish site to load). This is the sort of “news” piece you find on the so-called human rights aid society site:

Israeli attempts to destroy al-Aqsa Mosque were protested in Istanbul following the Friday prayers at Beyazıt Mosque. Groups of people gathered at Beyazıt Square chanting slogans and takbir after the prayers. They staged a mock-up of Masjid al-Aqsa and carried banners and posters reading “Masjid al-Aqsa is Our Honor, A Thousand Greeting to al-Aqsa, Cut Relations with Zionist Gangs, Cooperation with Israel is a Crime.” The protestors carried Palestinian flags and chanted slogans like “Hail to Hamas, Carry on Resistance, Shoot, shoot at Israel, Hamas, Down with Israel.”

Yep, that’s just the kind of news angle we expect from a human rights aid organization.

More from Harry’s Place shows the Facebook Wall photo of the U.K. Free Gaza group bearing the words “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” That’s certainly the slogan we expect from “peace” activists who claim to be for human rights. Human rights for Palestinians, I suppose, but not Israelis.

There is much, much more to this story than you will read in the mainstream media. Stay tuned.

Israeli Navy boards Fool Flotilla

I’ll wait on confirmation before I buy these reports. Turkish media says that three are dead and fifty wounded, and that Israeli commandos came on board shooting. There is so far no other source, and as I’m off to bed, I’ll find out in the morning.

“Activists” attack IDF with knives, pipes

The “activists” on the Free Gaza flotilla were armed with knives, lead pipes, and wearing gas masks.

There was an organized and planned action of attack against the soldiers by some of the activists, who were armed with knives, lead pipes and gas masks, according to the report.

Something tells me the “peaceful” protesters had a large number of Hamasniks in their passenger manifests.

Ynet has more:

An Israel Defense Forces soldier was moderately injured after being stabbed in the stomach as the Navy attacked aid ships sailing to the Gaza Strip. He was evacuated by helicopter to the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.

According to IDF sources, “The sail’s participants were not innocent and used violence against the soldiers. They were waiting for the forces’ arrival.”

Funny how the initial outraged reports of the Turkish media and Free Gaza propagandists of the IDF coming in shooting end the same way that most propaganda reports about the IDF end: With Israel defending itself.

Why did the “peaceful” protesters have knives and pipes? Hm. Let’s think.

Annals of smart diplomacy – NPT edition

President Obama has done much to distance himself and his administration from the Bush administration. However In some ways he has persisted. And when he has chosen a different path, it hasn’t always been successful. President Obama summarizes his approach to international relations like this:

Obama acknowledged that the U.S. is “clear-eyed” about the shortcoming of the international system, but he said America had not ever been successful by “stepping out of the currents of cooperation.”

“We have succeeded by steering those currents in the direction of liberty and justice, so nations thrive by meeting their responsibilities and face the consequences when they don’t,” the president said.

Surely President Obama considers the recent conclusion of discussions of the NPT as an example of his approach. The New York Times reports:

While rejecting a deadline, for the first time the main five nuclear weapons states accepted vague language referring to a new, stronger international convention on eliminating nuclear weapons, and the idea of a “timeline” was introduced.

Despite differences over the pace of disarmament and proliferation concerns, the document breathes new life into a treaty seen as under threat, analysts said. “That is the positive, there is much more attention on future action and new benchmarks,” said Prof. William C. Potter, the director of the center for nonproliferation at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

The Washington Post offers a few more details in its conclusion:

The U.S. delegation at the NPT review in New York had fought to excise all mentions of Israel in the final document. But on Thursday evening, as delegations prepared for a last round of talks, the conference president informed them that the latest draft of the text was a take-it-or-leave-it document, officials said. Final NPT documents require a consensus.

Many diplomats had expected U.S. officials to withhold approval of the final document because of the mention of Israel. But the U.S. government was apparently reluctant to be viewed as the spoiler at a conference that focused on one of Obama’s priorities.

National security adviser James L. Jones said Friday that the U.S. government “deplores” the decision to single out Israel and would “not permit a conference or actions that could jeopardize Israel’s national security.”

And this mention of Israel, of course, is why the NPT was controversial.

A good merchant – unlike Gen. Jones – knows the value of what he’s trying to sell and what he’s trying to get in exchange. As the Post observes, a final version of the NPT document was the highest priority of the administration. It’s ridiculous for Jones to “deplore” the singling out of Israel. That was the cost of getting what the administration wanted. If it had placed a greater value on protecting Israel, the administration wouldn’t have minded seeing the conference end without an agreement. The merchants who offered the administration the “take it or leave it deal” correctly read the values both of what the administration wanted and what it was willing to agree to, to achieve its goal.

How did Iran, currently seeking to join the nuclear club, view this?

The final statement of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference has called for the establishment of a nuclear weapons-free zone in the Middle East.

The 28-page document, which was agreed upon on Friday by all 189 NPT signatories after a month-long round of talks at UN Headquarters in New York, called for a conference to be held in 2012 “to be attended by all states of the Middle East, leading to the establishment” of a nuclear weapons-free zone in the Middle East.

Western diplomats said the United States finally agreed to a deal at the UN that would pressure Israel to join the NPT, Al Jazeera.net reported.

In this case the administration didn’t steer anything, it was steered. Here’s how Meryl put it:

The Obama administration threw Israel under the bus again. The NPT conference ended with all 189 countries—the U.S. included—issuing a statement that names Israel, and only Israel, when calling for a nuclear-free Middle East. It does not name Iran or Syria, two nations that were on the nuclear weapons track. It calls on Israel, and only Israel, to join the NPT, which Israel has never signed. Iran is a signatory. The document does not call on Iran to stop pursuing nuclear weapons.

Meryl emphasizes that if the United States reallly opposed the language singling out Israel, it had an option: not to sign.

Henry Sokolski concludes:

Bottom line: With the possible exception of Iran, it is difficult to see how Obama or anyone got anything out of this exercise but regret.
