POTUS vs. POTUS

It seems that Carter’s (almost) trouble-free sailing with his “Palestine: Peace or Apartheid” opus is coming to an end. Here is what another POTUS has to say about this attempt to be universally liked (by the Arab street):

Former President Bill Clinton, in a handwritten letter to AJC Executive Director David Harris, voiced appreciation for his efforts to expose the inaccuracies in President Jimmy Carter’s book on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “Thanks so much for your articles about President Carter’s book. I don’t know where his information (or conclusions) came from …” said Clinton. “I’m grateful.”

Soldiers and their nemeses

The U.S. Army and the IDF have many things in common, and one of them is traitors and moonbats.

First, Citizen Smash went undercover at the anti-war rally last weekend, and has four extremely interesting and amusing reports. It’s Smash at his best, writing a first-person record of events. I highly recommend all four parts. The pictures alone are worth it.

Finally clear of the newspaper hawkers and conspiracy mongers, I make my way to the entrance of the ball fields where the ANSWER hordes are assembling. I slip through the outer layers of protesters, and…

…the field is empty. A hollow shell. Like a fried mozzarella stick, where all the cheese has leaked out. I hear the voice of Johnny Rotten snarling in my head, “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?”

In a careful bit of stage management, the ANSWER organizers have lined up many of their people, armed with their distinctive yellow signs, along the fences opposite the counter-protesters. It creates the impression of a much larger crowd, but the bulk of the mob is crammed into the southern apex of the triangular field, closest to the Lincoln Memorial (I would later learn that CJ Grisham had captured audio of the plea from ANSWER for everyone to gather along the south end).

Part 1: Marching with Moonbats
Part 2: Part II: Eagles Up!
Part 3: Part III: Infiltration
Part 4: Part IV: A Tsunami of Stupid

Next, over at Kesher Talk, Judith Weiss runs a letter from over 1100 IDF soldiers protesting the members of “Breaking the Silence,” which purports to portray the IDF as brutal, abusive occupiers. This one’s a Read-in-full recommendation as well. Pay special attention the links: No post by Judith is complete without half a ton of backup information. Before she was a blogger, she was one of my best sources of information. No, I think she was the best. How that woman finds time to do anything but read I can’t tell you.

We have served with our lives to protect our country, the State of Israel, to protect the rights of our people to be safe—the Druze, the Israeli Arabs, the Bedouin, Christians, Muslims and Jews–and to protect the humanistic ethics we learned from our parents and forebears. Yet your movement tries to disgrace us before the world.

So this is our reply to you—our signatures to show that you, a handful of misguided individuals, are not telling the real story, that you magnify the few exceptions to our standard behavior and miss the total picture which is far greater than your collective experiences and imaginations. We are replying to your misguided words with far more than the 140 politically-motivated academics who signed your letter. We, the people of this land, come to you out of the great tapestry that is Israel—young soldiers, reservists in their thirties and forties, who are people of color, Christians, Arabs and Druze—who believe that Israel has a right to live in peace and security. We come from across the political spectrum but all of us care deeply and have lost and wept and yearned for a peace that we have tried to usher in with dignity, respect and honesty.

For us and for our children, we ask you to cease your destructive and misleading activities.

Read it all.

Al Gore and the Moore principle - riding the wave

The whole story circulates too widely to comment on it, after all everyone and his mother in law already spent a few sleepless night waiting for the wall of seawater swallowing his dwelling. And everyone has already discussed with his mother in law the derision of some people (especially of Republican persuasion in US of A) about this famous water wall.

But it seems that, after getting that Oscar, Al Gore is not content with his cinematic achievements, trying to use the momentum for political advancement.

Even though he has stated he does not intend to run again, polls suggest Mr Gore would be one of the favoured candidates among Democrats, challenging the popularity of Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

The first part of this quote is a consolation, the second a warning: it may happen. And the big question is whether the public will hand the job to the person who… how to say it mildly… reinvents more than just himself.

It has become rather an accepted practice in some “progressive” circles to counter the lies of the other side by even bigger lies and exaggerations, all “for the cause” (let’s call it The Moore Principle). When some leftist journalists say that the truth does not matter anymore, when some documentary makers produce fairy tales, it seems only logical that a person with presidential aspirations and similar political leanings will pick up and use the same method. Look what some sober people are saying about Al Gore and his ride on the wave.

Some of Mr. Gore’s centrist detractors point to a report last month by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations body that studies global warming. The panel went further than ever before in saying that humans were the main cause of the globe’s warming since 1950, part of Mr. Gore’s message that few scientists dispute. But it also portrayed climate change as a slow-motion process.

It estimated that the world’s seas in this century would rise a maximum of 23 inches — down from earlier estimates. Mr. Gore, citing no particular time frame, envisions rises of up to 20 feet and depicts parts of New York, Florida and other heavily populated areas as sinking beneath the waves, implying, at least visually, that inundation is imminent.

I am not too good in non-metric units of measure, but I guess that a difference between 23 inches and 20 feet is a bit more than a centimetre or two. I would also guess that fear, even when not coupled with greed, is a very good brain stimulator and makes crowds much more receptive to the message and the messenger. And the messenger is right here, looming larger than life, waving his Oscar (what symbol stronger than this one was invented in US?) and, while not explicitly promising salvation, at least broadly hinting that he (of course) is the savior. The Moore principle at its finest.

As Terry Glavin says:

Climate change alarmism is every bit as corrosive to public debates and public policy as climate change denial. Inattention to the truth, inconvenient or otherwise, is no better than propaganda.

But Al Gore seems to be undisturbed by the people who, belonging to his camp, are worried about the price of “inattention to truth” (That’s Terry Glavin, being more British than a Brit in this case - as far as understatement is concerned). This is the answer Gore offers his critics:

I am trying to communicate the essence of it in the lay language that I understand.

So - maybe there is an opportunity here for the man? Like, for example, to improve his understanding and to start with purchasing a measuring tape to get an inkling of the difference between an inch and a foot.

And as for the title of the above linked article: ” Reinvented Gore returns to Capitol Hill”: reinvention seems to be a strong feature of Gore, after all he has already (re)invented the Internet…

The apartheid canard: The floodgates are open

Posted on March 23rd, 2007 at 10:00 am by Meryl Yourish.

Thanks to Jimmy Carter, the world is going to push the “apartheid” canard onto Israel as often and as loudly as possible, starting with the UN Human Wrongs Council, the group which has managed to do almost nothing but condemn Israel since its inception.

An independent expert told the U.N. human rights council on Thursday that Israel’s treatment of Palestinians is comparable to apartheid.

John Dugard, a South African investigator on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, said that “anyone who experienced apartheid has a sense of deja vu when visiting the OPT (Occupied Palestinian Territories).”

Dugard, a lawyer who campaigned against apartheid in the 1980s, presented his findings on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories to the 47-nation council, which commissioned the report last year.

The AP does mention that the Human Wrongs Council is a joke that only seems to criticize Israel, but not until after the three to five paragraphs that show up in most newspapers “World” sections. This is paragraph six:

The one-year-old council has so far only passed resolutions critical of one country Israel. Muslim countries have proposed three further resolutions for the current session of the council that condemn the actions of the Jewish state.

And later in the article, we have the Jimmy Carter defense for using the word “apartheid.”

Dugard’s account of Israel’s treatment of Palestinians echoes that of former President Carter’s most recent book, “Palestine: Peace not Apartheid.” The work drew widespread condemnation in Israel and the United States and prompted 14 advisory board members of Carter’s foundation to resign.

Dugard said that he had previously refrained from using the term apartheid “on account of the sensitivity of the issue.”

But the uproar over Carter’s book “and the serious attempts to impugn his integrity, particularly in the United States, has led me to reconsider this decision,” Dugard said.

Of course, this is exactly what Jimmy Carter had hoped for.

“Can it seriously be denied that such acts are committed for the purpose of establishing and maintaining domination by one racial group of persons over another racial group,” Dugard said.

Yes, you effing moron, because Jews are not a racial group. Neither are palestinians. But please, don’t let facts get in the way of your JewIsrael-hatred.

British soccer fans: Israel’s all right

A bunch of British soccer fans went to Israel and found that it wasn’t the haven of demons and monsters that the BBC’s been telling them about for decades:

English soccer fans in Tel Aviv said they felt more welcome in Israel than in any country they have travelled to so far when following their national team.

One group of fans sitting and drinking into the late hours on the Tel Aviv beachfront said that in their short time in the country, they have developed a very positive view of Israel.

“I came over yesterday, and I can’t get over how relaxed it feels,” said Tony from Swindon. “The Israeli people I met were all really friendly and welcoming. This is a lovely, lovely country. It’s got great beaches too,” he added.

“If you go to France, everyone pretends they don’t speak in English, but here in Israel, everyone speaks English to you,” Tim from Derby said. “I’m astonished by how quickly we go through the airport,” he added.

“I would never think to come to Israel, but now that I’ve experienced it, I am thinking differently. I would like to return here with my family,” Tim said. “I’ve told my wife on the phone that we should come back here together.”

Another fan drinking one of many beers at the Mike’s Place bar, said: “I’ve only met people here with good intentions. This is a fantastic country.”

Of course, this was a group of fans imbibing many beers the night before the game. There’s no telling what they’ll say if their team loses. But it’s nice to see a bunch of drunken soccer fans who aren’t chanting “Jews to the gas” or trying to kill them.
