Friday briefs

Venezuela is burning, and the world doesn’t care: I just checked my Google News feed, and there’s not a single story about Venezuela in either Top News or the World categories. Meantime, the tropical basij rode motorcyles through the night, killing civilians who weren’t even protesting, the military bombarded apartment buildings with tear gas canisters, and nobody in the mainstream media cares. A friend on my FB feed commented that she gets her international news from Imgur now. Sadly, they’ve been covering the Venezuelan protests better and longer than the MSM. You know what’s high up on the “Top Stories” list? Jimmy Fallon. Because he’s SO much more important than Venezuelans being murdered by thugs.

Yeah, who didn’t see this coming? Considering that the Islamists are still calling Spain “Al-Andalus”, is anyone surprised that Muslims want in on the repatriation of Spanish citizenship that it’s giving Spain’s Jews? Pssst… here’s a hint… if you got tossed out because YOU INVADED THE COUNTRY, you don’t get to claim citizenship.

Still no 45-minute dressing-down: The prime minister of Turkey announced that there will be no deal with Israel until the “siege” of Gaza is lifted–this, after months of negotiations leading to an Israeli payoff to the families of the nine terrorists of the Mavi Marmara. Let us remember that Hillary Clinton called Benjamin Netanyahu and yelled at him for 43 minutes. Well, President Obama called his best bud Erdogan and told him he really, really should make nice with Israel.

A statement released by the White House regarding the two leaders’ conversation noted that the two spoke of “the importance of quickly concluding (Turkey’s) normalization agreement with Israel.”

Compare this to the 43 minutes Bibi had to listen to Hillary shriek over the phone–because tenders for new buildings were issued by a government office over which he had no control. During the peace process. You know, the process where Palestinian spokesliars keep on saying things like Israel is deliberately sabotaging the peace process. This goes unchallenged and unpunished. Because that’s the narrative. It’s always Israel’s fault, even though, clearly, it is not.

The Israeli Double Standard

How many times have Obama “administration officials” lectured, scolded, and otherwise harassed Israel every time an official spoke the truth (like saying John Kerry was “obsessed” with the peace talks and they were going terribly)? Well, here’s what Kerry said in response to the absolute lies Palestinians are telling about Israel.

US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed his “disappointment” to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday over anti-Israeli rhetoric.

Disappointed? Why, did the Palestinians say something mildly annoying? Let’s go look.

Last week, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told Xinhua, a state-run news organization in China, that Israel may initiate a military incursion in Gaza against Hamas to undermine Kerry’s efforts to forge peace.

Erekat had previously suggested that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu wanted Abbas assassinated.

Absolute lies. Unbelievable lies about the character of the Palestinian peace partners. Lies so bold that John Kerry finally had to say he was–disappointed.

Let us compare that to his wrath when Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon mistakenly thought he was having a private conversation and said that Kerry should leave Israel alone because the Palestinians don’t want peace. Words like “crisis” were thrown around.

But Palestinians can utterly reject U.S. peace plans, completely make stuff up about Israel, and constantly incite against Israel–and only receive a “disappointed” response.

And then there’s the lovely dual loyalty canard that an unnamed administration official launched at American Jews.

Apparently, you can only earn this administration’s opprobrium if you’re Jewish or Israeli. Lord knows Obama has never said a word about recalcitrant Palestinian behavior. Not that I would expect him to, as a friend of Rashid Khalidi and the man who just put the virulently anti-Israel Robert Malley on his National Security team. Buckle up, Israel. The next two years are going to be a bumpy ride.

The only thing I take comfort in is knowing that the Palestinians are going to utterly refuse any deal that doesn’t give them everything they want.

Shorter John Dickerson: No fair digging up dirt on Dems

Yesterday, Glenn Reynolds linked to John Dickerson’s article on CBS News saying that Republicans should not be looking into the Clinton presidential years while discussing Hillary Clinton.

We’re all very busy, so here’s a time-saver: Let’s all agree to not talk about Monica Lewinsky for at least two years. In fact, let’s not discuss any of the “events” in the Clinton marriage. You should embrace this view whether you think Hillary Clinton should be president or not.

The reasons?

Mostly, though, going down this road conveys the feeling that Republicans are obsessed.

And

You can try to convince people that Bill Clinton’s behavior is important, but while you’re doing that you’re not talking about whatever programs you support that are actually going to improve people’s lives.

This is why we should only concentrate on the last ten years, he says:

Hillary Clinton was a senator, ran a rocky but nearly successful presidential campaign, and served as secretary of state. There are at least 10 questions worth analyzing from these years that would actually bear on what kind of a president she would be.

However, here was John Dickerson in Slate (reprinted on CBS News) in May 2012 explaining why talking about Mitt Romney’s behavior as a teenager in high school was important and decidedly relevant to the presidential race.

One of the many tensions in evaluating presidential candidates is that we don’t want to disqualify them based on the stupidity of their youth. George W. Bush’s blanket denial that “when I was young and irresponsible I was young and irresponsible” seems like a good rule. On the other hand, we want to know who these candidates are who seek to lead us (especially when they spend so much time offering us synthetic versions of themselves). We are looking for some piece of evidence, some sign of what makes them who they are. Many of us prize “character above all” in a president and a lot of those hints about presidential character are located in the stories of youth. If you want to be president, your resume, accomplishments, and experience are not enough. Your origins matter.

So let me see if I have this straight. It’s fair game to dig into Republican candidates’ past as far back as high school, and insist that it’s because you need to understand the character of the man who would be president. But we’re not supposed to go back to the 1990s, when Hillary Clinton stood by her man as he was impeached for lying about having an affair with a much younger intern. Because we should concentrate only on her years as Senator and Secretary of State.

Shorter John Dickerson: Dirt only counts if it’s on Republicans.

Tuesday briefs

Liar liar pants on fire: Yeah, if you believe this, please forward me your bid for the Brooklyn Bridge. It’s been in my family for decades.

Even as a top Hamas official warned Monday against Palestinian acceptance of an American “framework” peace agreement, West Bank leaders were asserting that the Islamist rulers of the Gaza Strip would in fact back a peace deal with Israel based on “national principles.”

They’re not even willing to allow Jews on the Temple Mount. Why should we believe this bullshit?

Oh, that’s rich: Mahmoud Abbas is now in the tenth year of his four-year term as president, and he wants Hamas to hold elections before they can continue unity talks. Pot, say hello to kettle, will you?

Coward speaking from undisclosed location: We’re not afraid of Israel. In his annual Groundhog’s Day speech (full credit to Lair Simon), which means six more weeks of terrorism, Chipmunk Cheeks Nasrallah announced that he is not afraid of Israel–while in hiding for fear of his life. Have a nice life, Nazzy. The one where you keep going from one hiding place to another. So glad you’re not scared. That would really suck.

More proof Hamas wants all of Israel: They insist that if NATO forces were to patrol Israel’s borders, they’d be treated just like Hamas treats Israelis. Really, they really, REALLY want the two-state solution. Just ask the Palestinian spokesliars. But don’t worry, the media will glom ont that article and ignore the ones like this.

Yeah, it’s a little late for me: My grandfather thought that my family was descended from Spanish Jews, but I have no desire whatsoever to find out and apply for Spanish citizenship. Lots of Israeli Sephardic Jews are doing just that. Whatever. I’m pretty happy with my American citizenship, thank you.

What a fun weekend!

I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve been having a blast. The illness from two weeks ago is hanging on and it was trying its best to go for the fences, but my outfielder leaped and caught it at the last minute.

On the other hand, I did some great editing on book 2 today, and I’m still heading towards the finish line.

Plus, there’s always Meimei and Tig, ready to nap with me at any time of the day or night.

Your regularly scheduled snark will continue as I get better.

The PC(USA) anti-Israel hit piece

PC(USA) has long been anti-Israel, but their new study guide–created by the vehemently anti-Israel and anti-Semitic Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center–is nothing but a hit piece against Israel and Zionism. And oh yeah, they’re as bad as Nazis. Lazar Berman explains:

In “Zionism Unsettled,” a new study guide on Israel released in January for the PC(USA)’s 2.4 million members, the IPMN states its case clearly: Zionism is the problem, destroying both indigenous Palestinian lives and rich Jewish communities across the globe in a supremacist misinterpretation of God’s word on par with “Christian exceptionalist beliefs [that] contributed to the Nazi Holocaust, the genocide of Native Americans, and countless other instances of tragic brutality.”

Moreover, IPMN’s book argues, the American Jewish community actively stifles dissent against the Zionist narrative, taking advantage of the “ignorance and passivity of many liberal American Jews.”

In other words, there would be complete peace in the Middle East if it weren’t for those pesky Jews. (Ignore Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, all previous wars between Arab and Muslim states. They were probably all Israel’s fault, anyway.)

“Zionism Unsettled” strives to paint Zionism as an ideology foisted initially upon an unsupportive Jewish public, and increasingly outside of the authentic Jewish mainstream today. Most Jews, it claims, reject Zionism with their feet, choosing to live outside of Israel. Were it not for Zionism, Jewish life would be thriving across the Middle East. One graphic presents Jewish life in Iran as “alive and well,” a model of ancient coexistence shattered by the intrusion of Zionism into the region.

Alive and well? Sure, because Islamism’s rise in Iran would have completely ignored the Jewish population. Like it does today.

In the remaining schools, Jewish principals have been replaced by Muslims. In Tehran there are still three schools in which Jewish pupils constitute a majority. The curriculum is Islamic, and Persian is forbidden as the language of instruction for Jewish studies. Special Hebrew lessons are conducted on Fridays by the Orthodox Otzar ha-Torah organization, which is responsible for Jewish religious education. Saturday is no longer officially recognized as the Jewish sabbath, and Jewish pupils are compelled to attend school on that day. There are three synagogues in Tehran, but since 1994, there has been no rabbi in Iran, and the bet din does not function.

Of course, that is all Zionism’s fault. Changing the Sabbath, not allowing Jews to control their own religion–Zionism, you see. Clearly it’s because of Israel.

There were 100,000 Iranian Jews in 1948. There are a little mor than 10,000 today. And most of them would probably leave, but Iran does not allow Jews to bring their entire families on vacation, knowing full well they’d immigrate to Israel or the U.S. if they didn’t leave a hostage behind.

But hey, the lack of Jews in Arab lands? It’s all Zionism’s fault.

It blames the expulsion of Jews from Arab lands as “blowback” from the “perceived injustice of the enforced partition of Palestine, the creation of a Jewish state, the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in 1947-48, and the Sinai War of 1956.”

One has to wonder how Sabeel would explain the lack of Jews in Europe after WWII. Probably that they left voluntarily to go to Israel, or something.

The “study guide” is also full of deliberate misquotes.

And at times, the guide moves closer to something far worse. It claims that liberal Orthodox educator Rabbi David Hartman advocated the wholesale slaughter of Palestinians: “’Let’s really let them understand what the implication of their action is,’ he said of the Palestinians. ‘Very simply, wipe them out. Level them.’”

But a glance at the 2002 Washington Post article from which the quote was taken makes it obvious that Hartman was talking about Palestinian terrorists, not the civilian population at large, as “Zionism Unsettled” wrote.

This study guide is going to be adopted by Presbyterian churches all over the country. It’s guides like these that misinform people who trust their church to rely on impeccable sources. But these sources include deliberate lies and misinformation, as well as a healthy dose of anti-Israelism. And let’s be honest: Anti-Israelism is just a cover for anti-Semitism. I’m not talking about disagreeing with Israeli government policies. Anyone who thinks that Israel should not exist is, at bottom, a Jew-hater. Because Israel as a nation existed thousands of years ago. And somehow only Israel, of all the world’s nations, is not allowed to have its indigenous people return to their homeland.

An Israeli statesman tells an anecdote: The graffiti in Europe during the 1930s read “Jews, go to Palestine.” The graffiti in Europe today says “Jews, out of Palestine.” Clearly, PC(USA) agrees with that sentiment.

The only positive thing I have to say about this is that the congregations do not agree with the leadership. They voted down the BDS motion the last time the Sabeelists tried. I’m hoping they’ll see this hit piece for what it is, and complain enough to get it removed.

The what day is this? briefs

This is why Israel shouldn’t be paying a dime: Erdogan says there will be no normalizing of relations with Turkey unless Israel lifts the “siege” of Gaza. Sure, stop the IDF from preventing Syria, Lebanon, and Iran from transporting tons of weapons openly. Because what country doesn’t want to be part of its own destruction? By the way, it’s interesting to note that the Obama administration pressured Israel to make nice with Turkey, but there is no evidence it is doing the same with Turkey. Sure, he’s Israel greatest friend. Uh-huh.

Take that, BDSholes: This is highly amusing. An Israeli scholar is trying to get other scholars to retract or disavow references in their theses to any scholar that supports divestment from Israel.

“Obviously, my request for Penn State to allow me to remove references to her work is symbolic, really a political gesture, and I was hyperbolic and dramatic about it to make this point. But, really, even having her name associated with my writing makes me very ashamed,” Hiuni said.

Another Palestinian criticism of Kerry that will be ignored: The Palestinians are calling Kerry’s plan “useless“. There is no administration backlash or threats. Gee, it’s almost like they only pick on Israel, or something.

The horrifying Iranian naval tour: J.E. Dyer has the most amusing take on Iran’s threats to violate American territorial waters with its fearful two-boat armada. You should read it for a giggle or two.

Shirley Temple Black

The world is a little bit darker today at the passing of a former child star and ambassador who was loved by millions.

Shirley Temple Black, who as a dimpled, ringlet-haired moppet starred in a series of winsome films that lifted the spirits of millions during the hard days of the Depression, then retired from the screen at 22 and eventually went on to a diplomatic career, died surrounded by family at her home in Woodside, Calif. She was 85.

Temple was the most famous child star of her time and arguably of all time, beginning her film career at age three and becoming the symbol of upbeat family entertainment during an era when many had little to smile about.

By six, she’d received a miniature Academy Award and left her hand and footprints in cement at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

Her roles tended to follow a template: she was constantly cheerful, smiling, optimistic and pure hearted — sometimes without one parent, sometimes an orphan, but always able to bring joy to the coldest-hearted characters and love to those who yearned for it.

She was one of my favorite stars. And she seemed to be a good person off-screen. I remember hearing her relate a story about her birthdays. She would receive hundreds of presents from fans, fellow movie stars, politicians, you name it. Her parents made her give them all to charity and thank everyone for sending them. They wanted her to be as normal as she could. They succeeded.

May her memory be a blessing.

Calling BS on the mainstreaming of BDS

You know what’s keeping people from being blown to bits by terrorists at Sochi? An Israeli-made security system.

An Israeli company called NICE Systems (yes, really) has deployed a network of platforms that provide the Sochi Olympic Games with what they need most: a real-time “integration system platform” that “takes points of data — video images, radio communications, phone calls, access control alarms — and blends it all into a single operating system that interacts with all of that,” according to Bill Besse, a security specialist and Andrews International vice president, when interviewed by risk-management publication CSO Online.

NICE Systems is not usually mentioned in conjunction with bathroom spying, but in Sochi, as of 2012, one of the elements it installed was Net 2.5 IP Video Surveillance, which includes over 1,400 separate channels. What are those channels looking at, exactly? In its press release, contractors for the company said “the unique surveillance system … will provide 24-hour monitoring of the city’s main roads, buildings, and popular resort locations.”

In other words, any unconventional behavior will be noticed.

But the author finds it necessary to snipe at Israel, especially things like this:

And yes, in case you were wondering: NICE was founded by seven Israeli ex-army friends.

In Israel, a nation with mandatory army service, everyone is ex-army (except for the many religious who do not serve). This just shows the author’s ignorance. I’m betting he doesn’t know that Israel has the highest number of PhD’s in the world. That attitude abounds in the anti-Israel camp, and also from the average journalist, who does minimal or slovenly research where Israel is concerned. It took me no time at all to find the NICE Systems website. This author obviously couldn’t be bothered (although a quick look around makes me think this “news” site is rather sketchy).

Journalists like Christine Amanpour are now pushing the “mainstreaming” meme.

The campaign to divest from Israel and boycott its goods – not unlike the campaign to pull out of Apartheid South Africa more than two decades ago – has been gaining increasingly mainstream traction.

The ambassador denied that divestment was going “mainstream,” citing tech giants like Google and Microsoft “straining at the leash” to work in Israel.

They’re using the Scarlett Johansson Oxfam incident as proof of mainstream. Explain to me how her refusal to go along with BDS makes it mainstreaming?

It’s hit The Economist as well. The usual anti-Israel voices have decided that if they declare the BDS movement mainstream, it will be mainstream. What The Economist is not doing in this article is being accurate.

An American academic association is boycotting Israeli lecturers.

What The Economist fails to note is the tremendous pushback against the ASA’s Israel boycott. It is failing so hard that the BDS movement is begging for help for their pet academic society. There’s even a bill in the NY legislature aimed at removing state funds from campus organizations that boycott Israel. Boycotting Israel, by the way, is against U.S. law.

Of course, all of the usual anti-Israel suspects are trying to weigh in on the “ZOMG! BDS IS BECOMING MAINSTREAM!” narrative. The despicable Karl Vick (rhymes with “dick”) even manages to use the “greedy Jews” slam when reporting on BDS.

Anxious to hold on to their markets, Israel’s businessmen are increasingly backing the peace camp. The names on a recent advertising campaign in its favour included such luminaries as the head of Google in Israel. Hitherto they had usually preferred to stay out of politics.

Got that? Those money-grubbing Jews didn’t care about politics until it started affecting their profits. Leave it to Time magazine to keep using anti-Semitic stereotypes in place of reporting. The year I dropped my subscription was 1977, when they gave us this gem:

His first name means “comforter.”

Menachem Begin (rhymes with Fagin) has been anything but that to his numerous antagonists.

I digress, but it is with a purpose. The anti-Israel media has now decided to see if they can push the meme that the anti-Israel “Boycott, Divest, and Sanctions” movement is going mainstream. While it is definitely getting more play in Europe, and it needs to be countered, it is not going mainstream. Asia is not going to participate in an Israeli boycott. If Europeans want to stop using tech like the NICE Company is using to keep European athletes safe from terrorists–well, that’s their choice. But of course, they’ll never boycott the important things.

Updating

I’ve had a busy weekend. Four more chapters were placed into the “finished” category. I’m also just about done typesetting a friend’s novel, which will be published in a few weeks. I’ve got someone working on the cover of book two for me, and the March publishing date is looking like it’s going to happen.

I did the math and discovered that I’ve been averaging about 572 words a day since I restarted my push to finish the novel in late December. I’d like to double that average, but that’s not going to happen until I can start writing full-time. I am, however, going to push to finish book 3–if at all possible–by the end of 2014. I think it’s going to depend on my day job. If I finish the day exhausted, the writing suffers. Then again, I have leave again, and can start taking time off. I was taking every Wednesday off towards the end of book one to get it finished in time. Three day weekends work better, though. I can get a lot done if I’ve got all day to do it in.

Well, we shall see. Book two will be out soon, and I’ll see if I can’t get some buzz going this time around. If you have friends or relatives who liked the Harry Potter series, send them my way. They might enjoy The Catmage Chronicles, too.

Friday makeup briefs

Not another word about the Koch Brothers: Liberals are outspending conservatives in the race to put money into super-PACs. By how much? Nearly three times.

Oh my God, people, GET OVER IT: Americans still blame Bush for the lousy economy. Seriously? Because the housing bubble started on Clinton’s watch, and exploded during W.’s last year. In other news: The average American is an idiot.

Confirmed: Islamists have no sense of humor. Neither do the rest of the Lebanese, apparently.

With good reason: Seventy percent of Israelis don’t think the U.S. can be relied on to protect Israeli security interests. The funnier part of the poll: Sixty-seven percent agree with the recent criticism of John Kerry. However, Israel is doing damage control. Avigdor Lieberman is calling Kerry a “true friend of Israel“. Yes, because true friends do their best to dismantle the protections Israel has built up against terrorism over the years–like the Jordan Valley issue. Also, Kerry is doing the things that Democrats do best: trying to go around Netanyahu by making nice with other politicians. Kerry’s current favorite is Yair Lapid. Well, it’s better than choosing Meretz.

So incompetence is not an obvious reason? Joe Biden is living in fantasyland, thinking that he’s going to run for president. He sees “no obvious reason” not to run. I hope he does. I want him to split the Dems from anointing Her Majesty, Billary Clinton II.

Yeah, but I don’t care: Let’s see, I rarely watched Leno, I will never watch Fallon (gawd, he’s awful), and I didn’t tune in to Leno’s last show. But you have to acknowledge the irony. NBC screwed over Letterman to give Leno The Tonight Show. Now they’re screwing over Leno to give it to Fallon. Suggestion: Don’t work for NBC late night.

I can’t think of a snarky lead-in, because this man needs to die: Bashar al-Assad is publishing pictures of himself and his despicable wife looking like the humanitarians they are–visting babies while dropping barrels of explosives that murder and harm thousands of civilians. Won’t somebody please assassinate this horrible person?
