Johnny Mac’s going to Israel

John McCain is going to Israel next week, hoping it will help Jewish voters realize that he’s been pro-Israel for a very, very long time. I will point out that he never played kissy-face with Suha Arafat, or sat by in stone-faced silence while she lied about Israelis poisoning Palestinian children. Instead, he just—supported Israel.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain will arrive in Israel on March 18 as part of a delegation of senators visiting the region.

The schedule for the trip has not been released yet, but it is expected to be a brief, one-day visit during which McCain will meet with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

According to US sources, the trip is aimed at boosting support for McCain among Jewish voters in the US.

And here’s the best part:

McCain has already declared that he plans to attend Israel’s 60th anniversary celebrations this year. The republican candidate is considered a staunch supporter of Israel, and his visit to the country is expected to further boost his pro-Israeli image.

I think I can say with some certainty that I’ll be voting for Johnny Mac come fall. And not because of his views on Israel. It’s for many of the rest of his views, particularly in regard to the Long War—the one that the Dems refuse to acknowledge exists.

You’d probably like brother, Joe McCain too.

  2. John M says:

I do think this is encouraging news, but I would not go so far as to think his true feelings are any more pro-Israel than Bush. His calculations may just prioritize the Jewish electorate higher, for whatever reason.

That being said, better to have active support, heartfelt or not.

  3. Rahel says:

If he shows sympathy for the enormous traffic jams we have to put up with here in the capital whenever a dignitary comes to visit, I’ll vote for him twice.

  4. Alex Bensky says:

I expect to be voting for McCain too, and not just because of his stand on Israel. Or more to the point, I’d support Israel even if Vietnamese lived there.

  5. Eric J says:

Is it wrong to hope that he postpones the trip because the IDF is in the middle of pounding the hell out of Gaza and the West Bank, and the Secret Service balks?

  6. Soccerdad says:

    Eric,

The Secret service didn’t balk about having the President go to Ramallah and be protected by Abbas’s thugs police.
