Holocaust Memorial Day does that too, Meryl. Plenty of Jews in Iraq, the mandate of Palestine and elsewhere were lynched, murdered, plundered or left homeless during the war by the Muslim Brotherhood and other Nazi sympathizers.

I have heard the theory that when some stray Ashkenazi wandered into a Sephardic or Mizrachi community, people would refer to him as “the Ashkenazi”. The moniker would stick, the guy would settle down, marry a local woman, have kids, and in a few generations there would be a whole passel of Sephardim named “Ashkenazi”.
Dunno if it’s true, but it sounds plausible.
When names are given (like Ashkenazi) it is because the family may have originally come from an area but is not living there. Thus, Ashkenazi is a Sephardic name for a family that may have originally come from Europe. After some generations, they are indeed Sephardic but the name would stick.
I am praying the IAF can come up with effective electronic countermeasures for the Tor M-1 system. Once again we can thank the Russians for costing the lives of brave Israeli (and American) soldiers.
