Germans to Israel: Shut up if you want Gilad Shalit to come home. To be fair, he wants all parties involved to shut up, but really—this is what the mediator thinks is a necessary ingredient to getting Hamas to release their hostage for hundreds of convicted terrorists? A press blackout? Yeah, that’s what’s important.

Abbas to Obama: Stick it in your very big ears. Wow, look at what all those preconditions Obama demanded did for the peace process. It worked! The Palestinians now think they don’t have to do anything and Israel will be handed to them by the U.S. Great job, Obama! (Is it racist to say that he has big ears?)

If it’s Quds Day, this must be Holocaust Denial: And not just Holocaust denial from Ahmadinejad—his thugs attacked ex-president Khatami. Hey, if they kill Khatami, will Iranians rise up and not stop this time? Here’s what they chanted:

“Death to the dictators,” and “Not Gaza, Not Lebanon, We are ready to die for Iran,” chanted protesters.

The normal chant, if you have forgotten, is “Death to Israel” or “Death to America.”

If this is a holiday, it must be high terror alert in Israel: But gee, Obama told me that the Palestinians want peace. So did the Saudis. So do the Egyptians. Huh. Go figure. And 75,000 Muslims attended Ramadan prayers, unmolested, in Jerusalem—in their mosque deliberately built on the Temple grounds—that was not destroyed when Israel took control of Jerusalem. Exactly which of us is the Religion of Peace, do you think?

Hamas getting confident; shelling Israel again: More shells into Israel. But when mortars are fired from Gaza into Israel, the mainstream media doesn’t pick it up until Israel fires back.

Hamas’ pre-emptive strike at the UN See if you can follow this: Hamas is protesting to the UN that it can’t teach about the Holocaust in UN-sponsored classes in Gaza. The UN is saying, “Huh? We’re not teaching it.” Hamas then says, “Well, you’re about to, so don’t.” The UN says, “No comment.” Um—what? Of course, the UN will cave. Watch for it.

Reap what you sow dept.: A Saudi prince was injured by a terrorist who blew himself up on his way to meet with him. Don’t you just love how the AP talks about the prince spearheading the “aggressive” Saudi anti-terrorism campaign? Because it’s not like Saudi money is funding terrorism anywhere in the world or anything.

Am Yisrael Chai: The Jewish people live. That’s what the Benjamin Netanyahu said in Wannsee yesterday. That’s the place where the Nazis planned the destruction of the world’s Jews.

Ew! Jew cooties! Hamas is denying having participated in European workshops with Israelis. Because, you know, Jew cooties.

Note to self: No more putting purse on the back of chairs in restaurants. Ben Bernanke’s wife’s purse was stolen from the back of her chair at a Starbuck’s, begging the question: Didn’t she feel the thief take it? The media’s making this out to be a major ID theft case, but the details being given out make it seem like, uh, the thief stole her checkbook and tried to cash a check. Unless there’s more to the story, it’s typical media overhype.

Um, what’s the point of an Israeli suing a Swedish paper in a New York court? An Israeli lawyer (not one of the brighter ones if you ask me) is suing the Aftonbladet for libel in a New York court. Why not in Sweden? Am I the only one that thinks this is moronic?

Must-read blog post of the week

Rachel Lucas’ visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau.

I think this is something people really do forget about the extermination camps. The main image we all have of the camps is of the starving inmates at liberation in 1945, the piles of starved bodies. Always adults. We forget that at least hundreds of thousands of children were brought to camps like Auschwitz and were not ever photographed again, such as at liberation, because they were taken (usually with their mothers) straight from the train to the gas chamber.

But not before the Nazis took their little clothes off them and shipped those clothes back to German civilians to keep Frau Housewife happy while Herr Hubby was gone to war.

The long-term damage of the Holocaust

Filed under: Anti-Semitism, Holocaust, United Nations — Meryl Yourish @ 7:00 am

How many Jews would there be in the world today if Hitler had not destroyed two-thirds of Europe’s Jews?

Thirty-two million.

If not for the Holocaust, there would be as many as 32 million Jews worldwide, instead of the current 13 million, demographer Professor Sergio Della Pergola has written in a soon-to-be published article.

[...] The Holocaust ’struck a mortal blow particularly at the Jews of Eastern Europe because of their especially young age structure,’ and particularly the number of children. This led to significant long-term demographic damage. The quantitative ramifications are far beyond what we think,” he writes.

[...] Della Pergola says another demographic outcome of the Holocaust is the lower relative number of Jews in the world. “At present, the percentage of Jews in the world is constantly in decline. Before the Holocaust, the rate was eight Jews per thousand people in the world; today it is two per thousand.

Today, on the anniversary of the birthday of the architect of the destruction of Europe’s Jews, the United Nations gathers to see what it can do about making those demographics even worse—by continuing the demonization of Israel, and ignoring the threats to Israel and the world by countries like Iran. Watch for a repeat of Ahmadinejad’s anti-Semitic speech to the UN.

The ad that launched EATAPETA Day: PETA’s still lying about it

Filed under: EATAPETA, Holocaust — Meryl Yourish @ 7:00 am

Six years ago, on March 15th, we celebrated our first-ever Eat a Tasty Animal for PETA Day, in response to the offensive “Holocaust on Your Plate” ad campaign by PETA.

If you haven’t heard by now, PETA has started yet another offensive ad campaign. This one really reaches bottom—they are using Holocaust terminology, quotes, and pictures to liken the “slaughter” of animals to the slaughter of the Jews by the Nazis.

I’ve already received a letter from a child of Holocaust survivors who is, of course, extraordinarily offended. But here’s the thing: PETA is known for this kind of outrageous publicity stunt—and that’s what it is, an outrageous publicity stunt—and while I am also offended and outraged, there is absolutely nothing we can do that will make PETA change their ad campaign. I’m sure they knew exactly what they were doing, have a plan in mind, and, if they withdraw the campaign, will do it according to their deadlines and their decisions.

So let’s make up our own outrageous publicity stunt. Let’s designate Saturday, March 15th, as International Eat an Animal for PETA Day. Everybody set the date on your calendar, and either go out and enjoy a great steak, or cook one at home. Or cook up some chicken or fish or anything else that PETA wouldn’t want you to eat. And let’s let PETA know how their ad campaign has affected us.

Now, Germany’s highest court has agreed with us. It’s official: PETA runs offensive ad campaigns.

Germany’s highest court has ruled that a PETA ad campaign comparing animal slaughterhouses to the Holocaust is an offense against human dignity.

The 2003 campaign used eight, 60-square-foot (5.6-sq. meter) panels depicting images of factory farms next to Jewish concentration camp inmates and the slogan “Holocaust on your plate.”

The Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe on Thursday ruled that the ad campaign was not protected under freedom of speech laws.

PETA issued a statement that sounds awfully familiar to me:

“‘Holocaust on Your Plate’ was the idea of a Jewish PETA member, was funded by a Jewish PETA member, and is supported by people who believe that the original Holocaust was an atrocity that never would have happened if members of society had realized that discrimination based on any difference between living beings is supremacism.

And here’s why it sounded so familiar: Because PETA is still lying about the ad campaign. Six years ago, they made it seem like Isaac Bashevis Singer, who had been dead for eight years, was behind the campaign.

The concept of our campaign originated with Nobel Prize-winning Yiddish author and vegetarian Isaac Bashevis Singer, who said, “In relation to [animals], all people are Nazis; for [them], it is an eternal Treblinka.” As you may know, Singer fled Europe as the Nazis were coming into power and lost most of his family in the Holocaust. He became a vegetarian as a result of what he lived through and what he saw. He spoke out in favor of vegetarianism until his death in 1991. His argument was that it doesn’t matter who the victims are-we must speak out against all atrocities and cruelties and help to stop them.

PETA also lied to get the rights or outright stole copyrighted Holocaust photos used in the campaign.

The Holocaust Council was doubly angered because it was the primary source of the Holocaust images used in the campaign. The PETA Web site offers a glimpse of the display; at the end, it said “Holocaust photos courtesy of USHMM.”

But Museum officials say they never gave permission for its images to be used in such a display. PETA’s use of them “improperly and incorrectly implies that the Museum, a federal government establishment, endorses PETA’s project,” the Council’s lawyer wrote.

On Tuesday, the animal rights group responded, insisting that use of the photographs is “consistent with the Museum’s mission statement,” and claimed that an anonymous Jewish philanthropist funds the project.

The group also said it “requested, received and paid for the use of the photographs”— a claim Museum officials vehemently deny.

Arthur Berger, communications director for the Museum, said that a representative of the group sought the materials without indicating his PETA connection or how the material would be used.

“It was clearly a misrepresentation, at minimum, of what [the photographs] would be used for, he said. “There was no indication it would be used in a comparison with animals. Once we learned of this obscene connection, we sent a cease and desist letter.”

Six years later, PETA is still lying. Well, at least they’re consistent.

Long live EATAPETA Day.

No denying

Ynet and the Jerusalem Post reported on the recently found plans for Auschwitz.

Elder of Ziyon emphasizes what it implies about the Germans.

These are utterly ordinary architectural drawings, complete with cross-hatchings to symbolize where brickwork would be. People drew up these plans, consulted with their superiors about details, asked questions about the dimensions and uses of the buildings so they could be designed more efficiently and modified the blueprints accordingly. They were meticulously drawn with pride and a sense of accomplishment.

The draftsmen went home to their families after a day of drawing exacting representations of gas chambers and crematoria, they ate hearty meals and told jokes about their workday.

These are only a small number of the many who knew quite well what was happening during the Holocaust, and they all deserve a special place in hell.

Meryl notes that this shows the mendacity of “respectable” Holocaust denial.

This evidence contradicts directly Patrick Buchanan’s claims that it was the intervention of Britain that caused the Germans to start murdering the Jews.

Israel on Level Ground remembers Kristallnacht. The NYT mockup is priceless. Smooth Stone notes that German libraries still hold stolen books.

Plans for Auschwitz discovered; Pat Buchanan in shock

Original plans for the Auschwitz death camps have been discovered in Germany.

Original plans for the construction of the Nazi extermination camp of Auschwitz, including a gas chamber and crematorium, have been found in a Berlin apartment, a newspaper reported Saturday.

The daily Bild published copies of some of the 28 plans, which the head of Germany’s federal archives, Hans-Dieter Krekamp, called “authentic proof of the systematically planned genocide of the Jews of Europe.”

There are dates on the plans:

It said they were dated between 1941 and 1943 and stamped, “Waffen-SS and Police Construction Directorate.” Some were signed by senior SS officials and one initialed by the head of the Nazi ideological corps, Heinrich Himmler.

Kreikamp told the newspaper the documents were “extraordinarily important.”

One plan, drawn by a detainee as early as November 1941, when experiments in eliminating prisoners were already under way, had a gas chamber clearly labeled, Bild said.

Another showed a crematorium with places for ovens marked, and storage space for bodies.

This evidence contradicts directly Patrick Buchanan’s claims that it was the intervention of Britain that caused the Germans to start murdering the Jews.

That Hitler was a rabid anti-Semite is undeniable. “Mein Kampf” is saturated in anti-Semitism. The Nuremberg Laws confirm it. But for the six years before Britain declared war, there was no Holocaust, and for two years after the war began, there was no Holocaust.

Not until midwinter 1942 was the Wannsee Conference held, where the Final Solution was on the table.

That conference was not convened until Hitler had been halted in Russia, was at war with America and sensed doom was inevitable. Then the trains began to roll.

And why did Hitler invade Russia? This writer quotes Hitler 10 times as saying that only by knocking out Russia could he convince Britain it could not win and must end the war.

Of course, Buchanan’s insistence on ignoring evidence that proves otherwise will probably come into play. He’s a liar and a Holocaust minimizer, if not a denier, and he’s definitely an anti-Semite. He goes on neo-Nazi radio stations to promote his book, and isn’t even really bothering to hide his Jew-hatred any more. But there’s even more evidence than before that Buchanan is a lying, Jew-hating scum who should be bounced from MSNBC. Then again, MSNBC is a complete joke. It’s not like we expect real journalism out of them.

Comics stars get serious

Filed under: Holocaust, Pop Culture — Tags: — Soccerdad @ 9:00 am

Comic giants, Stan Lee, Joe Kubert and Neal Addams have turned their attention to getting a woman’s paintings back from the Auschwitz museum.

As all-star comic-book team-ups go, this one beats the first meeting of Superman and Spider-Man. Three of the elder statesmen of comic books — Neal Adams, Joe Kubert and Stan Lee — have joined forces to combat what they see as a real-world injustice.

The men are lending their talents to tell the tale of Dina Gottliebova Babbitt, who survived two years at the Auschwitz concentration camp by painting watercolor portraits for the infamous Nazi Dr. Josef Mengele. Some of the artwork also survived, but it is in the possession of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in Poland. Now 85 and living in California, Mrs. Babbitt wants the artwork back, but the museum has steadfastly refused to return it.

This is what they’ve done:

Now Mrs. Babbitt’s story has been captured in a six-page comic-book story illustrated by Mr. Adams, who helped take Batman back to his dark roots after the ’60s television show made him seem campy; inked partly by Mr. Kubert, whose comics career stretches back to the 1940s and who has drawn everyone from Hawkman to Sergeant Rock; and featuring an introduction by Mr. Lee, a co-creator of the Fantastic Four, the X-Men and many other Marvel heroes.

The text was written by Rafael Medoff, director of the David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies, which has championed Mrs. Babbitt’s cause. Mr. Medoff and Mr. Adams have offered the story to DC Comics and Marvel Entertainment in the hopes of getting it published, but no deal is yet in place.

I can’t say that I’m totally unsympathetic to the museum’s point of view:

Auschwitz museum officials, in a statement issued in 2001, indicated that they had bought six of Mrs. Babbitt’s watercolors in 1963 from an Auschwitz survivor and acquired a seventh in 1977. In 1973 the museum asked her to verify her work but did not offer to return the items. The museum has argued that the artwork is important evidence of the Nazi genocide and part of the cultural heritage of the world. (The museum did not respond to telephone calls and an e-mail message requesting comment.)

However Mrs. Babbitt did paint the pictures in question. And, more remarkably, her artistry saved her life and the life of her mother.

Surely the Auschwitz museum could work out a deal to return the artwork to Mrs. Babbitt for some time and then seek to get on loan after a specified period of time. Perhaps the museum could even display replicas and allow Mrs. Babbitt to have control of the art that she created under inhuman conditions.

The Times has made Mrs. Babbitt’s story available. (pdf)

Obama and the Holocaust myth

Filed under: Holocaust, Politics — Tags: , — Meryl Yourish @ 10:00 am

Obama is using the Holocaust to score rhetorical points. Mind you, he’s not the only person ever to have done so, but I’m calling bullshit on this quote:

“I am always taken back to sort of the core question of humanity that the Holocaust raises. That is, on the one hand, man’s great capacity for evil, and on the other hand, our ability to come together to stop evil.”

Stopping the Holocaust had absolutely nothing to do with the Allies coming together to stop Hitler. People who think that WWII happened to stop the Holocaust are either fools or liars. Allied leaders had the reports. They knew what was happening. They did nothing. No, wait. Some encouraged it, by refusing to take in Jewish refugees from Hitler’s advances (we’re looking at you, Britain).

STFU, Obama. This Jew isn’t buying your bull. Especially when you said you’d rather bring our troops home from Iraq and let the Iraqis suffer the consequences, instead of keeping them there to finish the job and prevent more civilian deaths.

Nobody stopped the Holocaust. It ended because Germany was defeated, and even in defeat, Germany managed to murder hundreds of thousands more (cf: Death marches).

Ordinary evil

Rochus Misch is nostalgic about his former boss.

Misch recalls:
“He had a deep and quiet voice. There was no need to be scared if you made a mistake”

His boss

particularly enjoyed the parties thrown by his wife

and the boss was something of an egalitarian:

Nobody saluted their higher-ranking colleagues within the building.

And given that he worked for his boss in Berlin during the Nazi era, well, his boss was quite open minded. One of his boss’s

favorite songs was composed by a Jew, and revealed that his personal cook was not a “real Aryan”

His boss even “had a small fund of jokes,”

His boss though wasn’t a terribly sensitive sort as he

“… cracked jokes about concentration camp inmates.”

Actually Rochus Misch’s boss was Hitler, who was evil incarnate. By presenting these impressions through Mr.Misch’s eyes news organizations are minimizing the enormity of Hitler’s crimes.

And no, the sentence:

The war crimes that occurred under Hitler’s leadership, including the Holocaust, go almost unmentioned in the book.

doesn’t sufficiently detract from the narrative of an old man reliving the glory of his youth.

Back in 1983, Commentary magazine published “Interrogating Eichmann” taken from a book by Avner Less, who’s job it was to build the case against Eichmann.

The book itself was reviewed by the New York Times. Two paragraphs in the review stick out in particular. First there’s Less’s description of Eichmann.

”My first reaction when the prisoner finally stood facing us in the khaki shirt and trousers and open sandals was one of disappointment. I no longer know what I had expected -probably the sort of Nazi you see in the movies: tall, blond, with piercing blue eyes and brutual features expressive of domineering arrogance. Whereas this rather thin, balding man not much taller than myself looked utterly ordinary. The very normality of his appearance gave his dispassionate testimony an even more depressing impact than I had expected.”

Then there’s this incident which still boggles my mind:

There is unexpected drama in the relationship between the police captain and his prisoner. Eichmann respected his interrogator while trying to save his own neck. He felt that one uniform was speaking to another, that rank had its privileges, even for a prisoner. The reader watches for the cat-and-mouse interplay. When Captain Less tells him that his father had been deported to Auschwitz by Eichmann’s own headquarters, Eichmann opens his eyes wide and cries out: ”But that’s horrible, Herr Captain! That’s horrible!”

So the Nazis did not come out of central casting. If anything their appearances seemed to have inspired Hannah Arendt’s “banality of evil” observation. But in Avner Less’s telling, the ordinariness of Eichmann served to underscore the enormous evil he had committed. In the recollections of Rochus Misch, the ordinariness he describes allows him and the reporters covering him to put a soft focus around the Holocaust. They are sentimentalizing genocide.

Pat Buchanan: Hitler’s Willing Prevaricator

Pat Buchanan is now blaming the Holocaust on Great Britain, indirectly at least. He says that yes, Hitler hated Jews, but no, he wasn’t going to destroy them. Britain made him do it.

There’s a pretty big problem here for Pat. Well, there are a lot of problems with this logic. But we can start with a pretty clear indication that Hitler intended to murder the Jews. There was a group of Nazis known as the Einsatzgruppen, whose job it was to kill all of what the Nazis considered “undesirables.” They were murdering Jews before the Wannsee Conference was held.

After the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, the Einsatzgruppen’s main assignment was to kill Communist officers and Jews on a much larger scale than in Poland[3]. These Einsatzgruppen were under the control of the Reichssicherheitshauptamt (RSHA) (Reich Security Main Office); i.e., under Reinhard Heydrich and his successor Ernst Kaltenbrunner. The original mandate set by Heydrich for the four Einsatzgruppen sent into the Soviet Union as part of Operation Barbarossa was to secure the offices and papers of the Soviet state and Communist Party; to liquidate all of the higher cadres of the Soviet state; and to instigate and encourage pogroms against all local Jewish populations. The orders that Heydrich drafted on July 2, 1941 stated that the Einsatzgruppen were to execute all Soviet officials of higher and medium rank; members of the Comintern; “extremist” Communist Party members; members of the central, provincial and district committees of the Communist Party; Red Army commissars; and all Communist Party members of Jewish origin[4]. In regards to Jewish populations in general, “No steps will be taken to interfere with any purges that may be initialed by anti-Communist or anti-Jewish elements in the newly occupied territories. On the contrary, these are to be secretly encouraged”[5].

There is much more about them at the Jewish Virtual Library. Here’s a document from 1941 that lists the numbers of Jews murdered by the Nazis—before the Wannsee conference.

EK 3 detachment in Minsk from 28.9-17.10.41:

Today I can confirm that our objective, to solve the Jewish problem for Lithuania, has been achieved by EK 3. In Lithuania there are no more Jews, apart from Jewish workers and their families.

The distance between from the assembly point to the graves was on average 4 to 5 Km.

I consider the Jewish action more or less terminated as far as Einsatzkommando 3 is concerned. Those working Jews and Jewesses still available are needed urgently and I can envisage that after the winter this workforce will be required even moe urgently. I am of the view that the strelization programme of the male worker Jews should be started immediately so that reproduction is prevented. If despite sterlization a Jewess becomes pregnant she will be liquidated.

Buchanan ignores facts like the above, and massacres like Babi Yar, which also occurred before the Wannsee Conference.

Kiev … contained a Jewish population of 175,000 on the eve of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. The Nazi forces captured the city in mid-September; within less than a fortnight, on the 29th and 30th, nearly 34,000 Jews of the ghetto were brought to a suburban ravine known as Babi Yar, near the Jewish Cemetary, where men, women, and children were systematically machine-gunned in a two-day orgy of execution. In subsequent months, most of the remaining population was exterminated.

And then there’s the sick, twisted logic to Buchanan’s claims. Hitler intended to rid Germany of all of its Jews. Here was his plan from the Wannsee Conference that Buchanan implies wouldn’t have happened without Britain’s entering the war in defense of Poland:

The purpose of the conference was to inform heads of German Government Departments that had responsibility for various policies relating to Jews of Reinhard Heydrich’s appointment as the sole executor of the “Final solution to the Jewish question”, and to obtain their agreement to subordinate their policies to him. In the course of the meeting, Heydrich presented a plan, approved by Hitler, for the deportation of the Jewish population of Europe to German-occupied areas of the Soviet Union, and the use of the Jews fit for labour on road-building projects; that plan was never fully implemented, owing to the failure to achieve final victory over the Soviet Union, and most of the Jews of German-occupied Europe were sent to extermination or concentration camps, or killed where they lived.

Let’s take Buchanan at his word. Let’s imagine that Britain never got into the war, that Germany fought Russia, and even beat Stalin. What do you think would have happened to the Jews of Europe, who were now in concentration camps, awaiting their fate? Slave labor camps at best, a quick execution at the worst? The Wannsee Conference was convened to discuss “The Jewish Question,” not to discuss “What Do We Do With the Jews Now That We Lost Russia?” Question. And “The Jewish Question” was a theme throughout Hitler’s reign. To pretend that he would not have murdered the six million if only Britain hadn’t started fighting him is the lowest Buchanan has gone yet.

Buchanan is a liar and a dissembler, who ignores inconvenient facts when they get in the way of his Hitler adoration. The fact is that with or without Britain, Germany would have run rampant over Europe, and murdered Europe’s Jews. The Nazis were already setting the plan in motion. Jews were being gassed in 1941, before the Wannsee Conference took place.

At another, later gassing — also in autumn 1941 — Grabner* ordered me to pour Zyklon B into the opening because only one medical orderly had shown up. During a gassing Zyklon B had to be poured through both openings of the gas-chamber room at the same time. This gassing was also a transport of 200-250 Jews, once again men, women and children. As the Zyklon B — as already mentioned — was in granular form, it trickled down over the people as it was being poured in.

The facts are there. Buchanan ignores them.

Buchanan is a liar, a purveyor of Jew-hatred and an admirer of Adolph Hitler. The man disgusts me more now than he has ever done before. That NBC continues to employ him is reprehensible. That Fox News brings him on as a commentator is reprehensible. That anyone pays this man a salary for anything repulses me. I used to say he was a more subtle David Duke. But he has brought himself down to Duke’s level with this latest book.

LBJ: A righteous Gentile

I didn’t know LBJ rescued Jews from the Holocaust.

Unwilling to stand by idly while Nazi henchmen murdered the “People of the Book,” Johnson met with Jewish leaders and said simply, “We [must] do something to get Jews out of Europe.”16

Straightaway, the congressman enlarged the scope of “Operation Texas.” Using methods sometimes legal, sometimes illegal, and cash supplied by men like Jim Novy, Johnson smuggled hundreds of Jews into Texas, using Galveston as the entry port. Enough money could buy false passports and fake visas in Cuba, Mexico, and other Latin American countries. After getting to such places, Jews would then make Galveston Island their only port of call.

Johnson smuggled boatloads and planeloads of Jews into Texas. He hid them in the Texas National Youth Administration [NYA], a task made easier because LBJ’s longtime friend Jesse Kellum was the Texas State Director of the NYA. Although it was illegal to harbor and train noncitizens in the NYA programs, the refugees were nevertheless temporarily housed in various sites scattered around the Lone Star State.

Novy bankrolled the effort, reimbursing the NYA for all expenses, including room and board. He also covered the cost of classes for those who did not speak English and classes to retrain the Jews so that they could meld into American life. Johnson funneled many men into NYA welding schools because welders were in high demand both during the war-preparedness campaign of 1940-1941 and during the war itself. Johnson saved at least four or five hundred Jews, possibly more.17

They hate me! They really hate me!

The Jew-hating bastards on yet another Holocaust denial site (based in the U.K., there’s a surprise) have linked to one of my old teaching posts (and not in a good way). And they don’t like my No Israel-Bashing Zone policy, either. Aww. My heart bleeds. Jew-haters are unhappy because I won’t let them pour out their filth on my blog.

The Purim mentality is not confined to Zionist opinion formers, but would seem to be shared (and passed on) by many ordinary Jews such as teacher and blogger Meryl Yourish, who under the heading Teaching Little Jews to be Big Jews, tells us:

I’m a Jew-hater’s worst nightmare: I teach little Jews to be big Jews. I may not have children of my own, but I’m doing my part to propagate the Jewish nation. That knowledge gives me great satisfaction.
…I pass it on to my students. I’ve taught them that one way to piss off a Jew-hater is to chant “Am Yisrael Chai” (”The people of Israel live”). I’ve noticed that if you start that chant at an anti-Israel protest, it really torks off the anti-Israel protesters. This always leads my students into chanting the phrase for a minute or two in class, which they love. They also like it when I say things like “Purim is the holiday where the Jews kicked the crap out of the Persians.”

Don’t even think about debating with the like of Ms Yourish, since she tells us that her website is a No-Israel Bashing Zone.

I’ve no doubt that she and her students will be cheering on the bombs and missiles, if and when they start falling on Tehran.

So, should I consider it an honor that I’m on the front page of a Holocaust-denying, Jew-hating site? Or should I just laugh at them and continue to do what I’m doing, as it’s obviously working.

I think I’ll just laugh. Poor, pitiful people. Their feelings of inadequacy are so large, they have to blame someone for their failures. And hey, why not blame the people who have the largest per capita representation in Nobel prizes, in the arts, literature, and science in the world? Why not blame the people who have invented the cure for polio, instant messaging, drip-irrigation technology, and a thousand other things that helps humanity thrive? Why not blame the people who have defied the odds to remain not just in existence, but thriving in every nation they comprise a significant population?

Clearly, the Jew-haters have issues. Psychiatry might help. But their hatred is so deep, I suspect it’s incurable.

Like I teach my children: They tried to kill us. They failed. Let’s eat.

Am Yisrael chai.

Or, to put a more modern turn on it: In your face, assholes.

A woman of valour

Filed under: Holocaust — Tags: — Meryl Yourish @ 11:30 am

May her name be remembered.

Irena Sendler, a Polish social worker who organized the rescue of some 2,500 Jewish children from the Nazis and was later honored by Yad Vashem memorial, has died.

Sendler’s daughter, Janina Zgrzembska, told The Associated Press her mother died at a Warsaw hospital Monday morning. She was 98.

Records show Sendler’s team of some 20 people saved almost 2,500 children from the Warsaw Ghetto between October 1940 and April 1943, when the Nazis burned the ghetto, shooting the residents or sending them to death camps.

In 1965, Sendler became one of the first so-called Righteous Gentiles that the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem honored for wartime heroics. Poland’s communist leaders at that time would not allow her to travel to Israel, and she collected the award only in 1983.

Despite the Yad Vashem honor, Sendler largely remained forgotten in her homeland. Only in her final years, confined to a nursing home, did she finally become one of Poland’s most respected figures, with President Lech Kaczynski and other politicians backing a campaign that put her name forward for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Funny, isn’t it, how the Nobel Peace Prize goes to thugs like Arafat and smugs like Carter, but not to true heroes of humanity like Irena Sendler?

Never Again, defined by the Mossad

Filed under: Anti-Semitism, Holocaust, Israel — Meryl Yourish @ 12:00 pm

Uzi Arad, a former director of intelligence for the Mossad, has an op-ed in Ynet today that states exactly what I’ve been saying for decades: When Jews say “Never again,” we don’t mean that never again will the world commit genocide, or that we won’t let it happen. That’s a given. We have no control over the world, nor over mankind’s basest instincts (which is why there is Darfur and was Cambodia and will be somewhere else in another few years). But we do have control over what happens to Jews.

“Never again” means never again will we go down without a fight. “Never again” means never again will the world be able to nearly exterminate the Jewish population of nation after nation, indiscriminately, without any real punishment. “Never again” means never again will Jews rely on the kindness of others to save us from the genocidal maniacs that roam the earth.

It is clear that the threats hurled at us frequently by Iran’s leaders and their emissaries (Hamas, Hizbullah, etc.) are no less than a call – or pledge – for genocide. Some of them deny the Holocaust, yet at the same time justify their war against us by claiming that Israel was forced upon the region by those who perpetrated the Holocaust – and this entire twisted argument is meant to pave the way for the holocaust that would befall Israel.

The world hears the voices and sees the deeds, yet aside from a few (but important) friends it watches idly and adopts a complacent attitude. In fact, predictions regarding Israel’s possible demise are becoming increasingly fashionable among some elements worldwide: Within governments, at university campuses, and in intellectual magazines. Apocalyptic terms have gained a foothold even in Israel.

[...] However, on Holocaust Memorial Day, we are permitted to – and in fact, obligated to – make it clear to others that there will be no situation whereby the State of Israel will be harmed without those who perpetrate this, including their collaborators, paying the full price for it. The decree “Never Again” does not only mean that no longer will we be defenseless, but also that those who harm us will not be spared.

Peres and Ben-Eliezer made it clear – and they were telling the truth. Recognizing this would ensure the realization of the “Never Again” decree’s original meaning – there will no longer be anyone who will dare rise against us.

Shimon Peres is not known as a hawk, and yet, he told the world that attempts to destroy Israel are a two-way street that would result in the destruction of the aggressor. God forbid that it should be so, because I don’t want to see a nuclear device go off in Israel. But seventy years after the onset of the Holocaust, it’s only right that Israel should be pointing out that Jews today are a lot better armed than we were in 1938. Harm us at your peril, this time.

Holocaust Remembrance Day

Filed under: Holocaust, Jews — Meryl Yourish @ 11:00 am

Today is the day that Jews all over the world remember the victims of the Holocaust. Even as we do this, the Palestinians and their Arab and Muslim allies once again try to expropriate the language and images of the murder of Jews, and apply it to Palestinians. The word “Holocaust” is being used a lot to describe Gaza. Well, let’s take a look at the difference between the real Holocaust, and the utter misuse of that word to describe Palestinian deaths in a war with Israel.

The real Holocaust deaths (a partial list):

Country Jews Killed % of Country’s Jews Killed
Austria 50,000 36
Belgium 25,000 60
Belorussia 245,000 65
Bohemia/Moravia 80,000 89
Bulgaria 11,400 14
Estonia 1500 35
France 90,000 26
Greece 65,000 80
Hungary 450,000 70
Italy 7500 20
Latvia 70,000 77
Lithuania 220,000 94
Luxembourg 1950 50
The Netherlands 106,000 76
Norway 870 55
Poland 2,900,000 88
Russia 107,000 11
Romania 270,000 33
Slovakia 71,000 80
Ukraine 900,000 60
Yugoslavia 60,000 80

The total number of Palestinians killed in the territories since the start of the second intifada: 4,609.

The Palestinian population today (disputed):

Gaza: 1,482,405
West Bank: 2,611,904

The Palestinian population in 1967:

Gaza:380,800
West Bank: 604,494

Someone else can figure out percentage of population growth and the number of Palestinian deaths. I’m not going to waste the time on an obviously spurious comparison. I’m just going to continue to point out the attempt to expropriate all of the language used to describe the world’s crimes against the Jews by the Palestinians, who would have you believe they are also victims of anti-Semitism. This needs to be stopped.

Never forget. There is no Palestinian “Holocaust.” There was only one Holocaust, that of the Jews by the Nazis, with the willing help of Europeans and Arabs, including the ones who lived in what was then known as Palestine—and whose descendants live in the territories today.

The descendants of the victims of the Holocaust? Well, there are none for the true victims. Only for the survivors.

Am Yisrael Chai. The people of Israel live. Long live the people of Israel.

Endgame

Remember how smug, insufferable, know-it-all David Ignatius informed us that the NIE showed that our policies towards Iran were all wrong? Here’s how he put it in a Post-Global forum:

Sometimes events create space for diplomacy where none existed before. I want to think that this might be the case with the new National Intelligence Estimate on Iran. What matters about the NIE is less the details than the atmospherics. The details themselves are hard to parse: Yes, we now believe that in 2003 Iran halted a previously unknown covert military program to build a bomb; but no, that doesn’t mean Iran has stopped its threatening nuclear activity or that it has given up its ambition to be a nuclear power. When you boil it all down, the United States has aimed its intelligence rifle at Tehran–and shot itself in the foot. It has undercut its old policy and embarrassed itself and its allies. So what’s the advantage in that, you ask? Simply this: The NIE creates a way for both parties to come to the negotiating table without losing face. Both sides can start a new narrative, in place of the old one that led to an impasse. It is this serendipitous aspect–this unexpected reversal of the parameters of the game–that interests me most.

Shortly after its release my Watcher’s Council colleague Wolf Howling wrote:

Our intelligence agencies have done our nation a tremendous disservice. It will, inn the long run, likely cost us bitterly since it puts off any reckoning with the single most destabilizing force in this world. Every day that reckoning is put off will increase the cost we will pay and gold and blood. And if Iran achieves a nuclear arsenal, that cost we will pay will rise exponentially.

Charles Krauthammer points out in today’s column, the Holocaust Declaration (or here) that this week’s announcement that Iran was installing 6000 new centrifuges demonstrates that we have reached a point of no return.

It is time to admit the truth: The Bush administration’s attempt to halt Iran’s nuclear program has failed. Utterly. The latest round of U.N. Security Council sanctions, which took a year to achieve, is comically weak. It represents the end of the sanctions road.At home, the president’s efforts to stop Iran’s nuclear program were irreparably undermined by November’s National Intelligence Estimate, whose “moderate confidence” that Iran has not restarted nuclear weaponization — the least important of three elements of any nuclear program — has promoted the illusion that Iran has given up the pursuit of nuclear weapons. Yet uranium enrichment, the most difficult step, proceeds apace, as does the development of nuclear-capable ballistic missiles.

The president is going to hand over to his successor an Iran on the verge of going nuclear. This will deeply destabilize the Middle East, threaten the moderate Arabs with Iranian hegemony and leave Israel on hair-trigger alert.

This failure can, however, be mitigated. Since there will apparently be no disarming of Iran by pre-emption or by sanctions, we shall have to rely on deterrence to prevent the mullahs, some of whom are apocalyptic and messianic, from using nuclear weapons.

(Keep in mind the second paragraph when you read Ignatius’s praise for Thomas Fingar from a couple of years ago. What Fingar and those involved in the NIE exercised was not caution. It was recklessness to create an illusion of complacency.)

At this point then, what does Krauthammer counsel?

How to create deterrence? The way John Kennedy did during the Cuban missile crisis. President Bush’s greatest contribution to nuclear peace would be to issue the following declaration, adopting Kennedy’s language while changing the names of the miscreants:“It shall be the policy of this nation to regard any nuclear attack upon Israel by Iran, or originating in Iran, as an attack by Iran on the United States, requiring a full retaliatory response upon Iran.”

This should be followed with a simple explanation: “As a beacon of tolerance and as leader of the free world, the United States will not permit a second Holocaust to be perpetrated upon the Jewish people.”

This policy — the Holocaust Declaration — would establish a firm benchmark that would outlive this administration. Every future president — and every serious presidential candidate — would have to publicly state whether or not he supports the Holocaust Declaration.

Krauthammer then acknowledges that such a policy may not deter the likes of Ahmadinejad, but it would likely (or maybe just hopefully) spur rational actors in Iran to take charge and restrain or depose him.

Krauthammer further argues that such a policy isn’t just necessary to save the Jews of the world (see his 10 year old essay At Last Zion for a fuller treatment of this topic), but to confirm America’s role in the world as a beacon of freedom.

For the first time since the time of Jesus, Israel is the home of the world’s largest Jewish community. An implacable enemy has openly declared genocidal intentions against it — in clear violation of the U.N. charter — and is pursuing the means to carry out that intent. The world does nothing. Some, like the Russians, are literally providing fuel for the fire. For those who believe that America stands for something in the world — that the nation that has liberated more peoples than any other has even the most minimal moral vocation — there can be no more pressing cause than preventing the nuclear annihilation of an allied democracy, the last refuge and hope of an ancient people openly threatened with the final Final Solution.

UPDATE: If this report in the Times of London is accurate, the recklessness of the NIE is even more apparent.

A previously unknown missile location, the site, about 230km southeast of Tehran, and the link with Iran’s long-range programme, was revealed by Jane’s Intelligence Review after a study of the imagery by a former Iraq weapons inspector. A close examination of the photographs has indicated that the Iranians are following the same path as North Korea, pursuing a space programme that enables Tehran to acquire expertise in long-range missile technology.Geoffrey Forden, a research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said that there was a recently constructed building on the site, about 40 metres in length, which was similar in form and size to the Taepodong long-range missile assembly facility in North Korea.

Avital Johanan, the editor of Jane’s Proliferation, said that the analysis of the Iranian site indicated that Tehran may be about five years away from developing a 6,000km ballistic missile. This would tie in with American intelligence estimates and underlines why President Bush wants the Polish and Czech components of the US missile defence system to be up and running by 2013.

So as Tehran reaches the point of completing its quest for the requisite fuel, it is working on a delivery system too. Not exactly the pause that the NIE proclaimed in its summary.

Jihad Watch mentions that this isn’t just about “filthy bacteria,” it’s also about “corrupt powers.”

Note the resonance that this kind of talk will have with the American Left, which sees the U.S. as the chief of the “corrupt powers.” And remember: this man was applauded at Columbia University.”Iran: President wants to ‘annihilate corrupt powers,’” from AKI (thanks to Insubria).

Israel Matzav cautions:

Will this wake the world up to the fact that Iran’s nuclear aspirations are not just Israel’s problem? Don’t hold your breath. In the meantime, expect countries like Germany to continue to undermine sanctions in the pursuit of the Almighty Euro.

Gina Cobb reminds us that this emphasizes the importance of missile defense, a position that I imagine with which Poligazette wholeheartedly agrees.(via memeorandum)

German in the Knesset

Filed under: Holocaust, Israel — Meryl Yourish @ 7:00 am

History is being made in Israel with Angela Merkel’s visit. On Tuesday afternoon, Israeli time, she’ll address the Israeli govenment. She’s already visited Yad Vashem and other sites. A few MK’s are boycotting her speech.

However, not everyone at the Knesset is interested in hearing a German-language speech at Israel’s parliament. One of them is MK Arieh Eldad (National Union-NRP.) Fellow party member Yitzhak Levy also told Ynet that he will not be entering the plenum to begin with.

“It is very very difficult to hear the German language at the Knesset. We want to remind people that even though Germany certainly displays friendship towards Israel these days, we still remember what happened,” he said. “I do not want to come in and then leave, because there is no reason to hurt her personally. Therefore, I won’t come in at all.”

Likud Knesset Member Yisrael Katz said he also intends to stay away from the special session.

“I have no intention to take part in an event in the presence of German figures in light of their responsibility for the massacre of the Jewish people,” he said. “I do not intend to forgive or forget. I do not take part in any ceremony that includes the participation of a German figure.”

Another Likud MK, Limor Livnat, will also stay away from the Knesset.

One MK is a Holocaust survivor, who isn’t boycotting:

“It does not bother me at all that Merkel chose to deliver her speech in German,” Marom Shalev said. She added that she will not be present at the Knesset because of previous obligations, but said that the objection to a German-language speech is “no more than populism.”

I think that the MK’s who are boycotting are missing the real point: Angela Merkel represents the current incarnation of the nation that Hitler tried, in every way possible, to use to eliminate the Jews. He’s long since turned to ash and dust.

We’re still here.

And we have a nation.

If Hitler were in a grave, he’d be setting the record for most number of spins in a single week.

One other note: The enemy isn’t in Germany. It’s right next door, with the Holocaust-denying heirs of the Nazis in the Arab and Muslim world. Perhaps the MK’s should stop pissing around boycotting Angela Merkel’s speech, and instead, work on the current leadership to stop kowtowing to the terrorists. That would be a much more worthwhile project.

The noble house of Propper de Callejon

Filed under: Holocaust, Israel, Movies, Pop Culture — Soccerdad @ 11:00 am

What did the Spanish diplomat, Eduardo Propper de Callejon have in common with Raoul Wallenberg, Frank Foley and Aristades De Sousa Mendes? Like the others, Propper de Callejon risked his life and career to issue visas to Jews to escape the Nazis.

As German troops marched into France in the summer of 1940, Propper de Callejon, then first secretary in the Spanish Embassy in Paris, stamped and signed passports for four days nearly nonstop to allow refugees to escape to Spain, and from there to the relative safety of Portugal.Propper de Callejon, a Franco loyalist, defied Spanish Foreign Ministry instructions not to issue such visas. In 1941, he was demoted, and never promoted to be an ambassador. He retired in 1965 and died in 1972. The exact number of visas Propper de Callejon issued remains unknown, but Yad Vashem Director Avner Shalev said it was believed to be at least 1,500, both Jewish and non-Jewish. ”He was signing papers with both his hands. He signed so many that his hands hurt so much, my mother had to bandage them at the end of the day,” said Elena Bonham Carter, his daughter. ”It was extraordinary. He said those were the most important days of his life.”

Like De Sousa Mendes he paid for his heroism with his career.

Wallenberg came from one of the wealthiest families in Sweden. (And it’s still quite wealthy.) Propper de Callejon, though, also has a famous relative, his granddaughter.

Israel’s Holocaust memorial on Wednesday posthumously recognized a prominent Spanish diplomat, who was actress Helena Bonham Carter’s grandfather, for his role in saving hundreds of Jews during World War II.

(Yes, her name differs from that of her mother by one letter.)Not entirely related, you might remember that two other Harry Potter cast members have contributed to a Holocaust memorial event.

LGF noticed something about the Hezbollah salute. (via memeorandum)
It’s Almost Supernatural noticed the same thing about “Palestinian Security Forces” and the “Fatah militia.”
Elder of Ziyon noticed it about “supporters of the Fatah movement” Hezbollah’s 10 year old recruits and a Gaza rally for Hamas.
Israelly Cool notices it among Palestinian security forces near Tulkarem.

Repeat after me, “We have nothing against Jews, it’s the Zionists we hate.”

I guess that this bit of history from Bernard Lewis can’t be ignored.

In 1940, the government of France surrendered to Nazi Germany. A new collaborationist government was formed and established in a watering place called Vichy, and General Charles de Gaulle moved to London and set up a Free French committee. The French empire was beyond the reach of the Germans at that point, and the governors of the French colonies and dependencies were free to decide: they could stay with Vichy or rally to de Gaulle. Vichy was the choice of most of them, and in particular the rulers of the French-mandated territory of Syria-Lebanon, in the heart of the Arab East. This meant that Syria-Lebanon was wide open to the Nazis, who moved in and made it the main base of their propaganda and activity in the Arab world. It was at that time that the ideological foundations of what later became the Baath Party were laid, with the adaptation of Nazi ideas and methods to the Middle Eastern situation. The nascent party’s ideology emphasized pan-Arabism, nationalism, and a form of socialism. The party was not officially founded until April 1947, but memoirs of the time and other sources show that the Nazi interlude is where it began. From Syria, the Germans and the proto-Baathists also set up a pro-Nazi regime in Iraq, led by the famous, and notorious, Rashid Ali al-Gailani.

UPDATE: Solomonia observes:

They’re not the only guys who use that kind of salute in the region. It attests to the direct influence of European Fascism on some of the trappings that these area groups have taken on. Fertile ground.

Status quo ante

Elaine Sciolino reported late last week, By Making Holocaust Personal to Pupils, Sarkozy Stirs Anger (Somehow the Times makes a stand on principle seem like a bad thing.)

President Nicolas Sarkozy dropped an intellectual bombshell this week, surprising the nation and touching off waves of protest with his revision of the school curriculum: beginning next fall, he said, every fifth grader will have to learn the life story of one of the 11,000 French children killed by the Nazis in the Holocaust.“Nothing is more moving, for a child, than the story of a child his own age, who has the same games, the same joys and the same hopes as he, but who, in the dawn of the 1940s, had the bad fortune to be defined as a Jew,” Mr. Sarkozy said at the end of a dinner speech to France’s Jewish community on Wednesday night. He added that every French child should be “entrusted with the memory of a French child-victim of the Holocaust.”

Adding to the national fracas over the announcement, Mr. Sarkozy wrapped his plan in the cloak of religion, placing blame for the wars and violence of the last century on an “absence of God” and calling the Nazi belief in a hierarchy of races “radically incompatible with Judeo-Christian monotheism.”

Crunchy Con applauds the effort but wonders if it will help

France has a massive problem with these Muslim ghettoes and the children within them who are being raised as veritable Hitler Youth, and if Sarkozy thinks expanding Holocaust education is going to solve the problem, he’s dreaming. On the other hand — and this is why I support what he’s doing, with the same reservations that offend Simone Veil — I believe it is imperative to reach the hearts of the French majority, and inculcate within them from a young age an emotional identification with the victims of the Shoah.

He goes on to describe how the mini-series “Holocaust” affected him and hopes that President Sarkozy’s plan will have on the majority of the French population.

Contentions.Noah Pollak shows that this episode isn’t isolated, it’s part of a pattern with the new French President.

Have you heard what the French President has been saying lately? On Wednesday, he declared that “I won’t shake hands with people who refuse to recognize Israel,” a snub directed at Muslim leaders. On the same day he warned that France may join the U.S. and Canada in boycotting the UN’s anti-Israel hatefest (known officially as an “anti-racism conference”) in Durban, South Africa: “France will not allow a repetition of the excesses and abuses of 2001.”

He has pledged to attend Israel’s 60th anniversary celebrations in May, and after the recent suicide bombing in Dimona, sent a condolence letter to Shimon Peres in which he went out of his way to declare that he will always stand with Israel against terrorism.

His rhetoric on Iran of late has surpassed President Bush’s in its spirit of determination: “Proliferation is a grave threat to international security. We cannot sit by and do nothing while Iran develops technologies which are in violation of international law.”

Sarkozy made some of the above comments at the annual dinner of the CRIF, the umbrella organization of the French Jewish community — it was the first time a French president had ever attended.

I can think of at least 3 ironies with the new French President.

1) His new wife comes from a world where Palestinian revolutionary chic is quite in fashion.
2) In another year or so it might be conservatives who are wishing that the American President was more like the French President, mirroring the distress of the Left over the past 8 years.
3) Depending on who’s elected President in November, France might return to its pre-1967 role as Israel’s chief ally in the West.

Torahs in the navy

Breaking: Tom Lantos to retire

Filed under: Holocaust, Politics — Meryl Yourish @ 2:43 pm

Tom Lantos, the only Holocaust survivor elected to Congress, is retiring due to illness.

U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), the only Holocaust survivor elected to the U.S. Congress, is retiring because he is suffering from cancer.

Lantos, one of the most powerful members of Congress and the chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, said in a statement Wednesday he will serve out his term, which ends at the end of this year.

“Routine medical tests have revealed that I have cancer of the esophagus,” he said. “In view of this development and the treatment it will require, I will not seek re-election.”

Lantos most recently led the battle to substantially expand sanctions against Iran, a bill that passed overwhelmingly in the House and is under consideration in the Senate. Considered a go-to lawmaker on many Jewish issues, he also is a strong advocate of reaching out to rogue states, even Israel’s most dire enemies. He played a role in swaying Libya to give up its own weapons of mass destruction program in 2003 and has said he is willing to meet Iran’s leadership.

The last Nazis

Filed under: Holocaust, Israel — Soccerdad @ 7:00 am

As they get older the chances that old Nazi war criminals will escape earthly justice increase. The Simon Wiesenthal center is making efforts to find some of the surviving few to bring them to justice, especially in South America.

In recent decades the rate of such discoveries has slowed, though there are still sporadic sightings. The Wiesenthal Center hopes one of the next to be found will be Aribert Heim, an Austrian-born doctor wanted for killing hundreds of prisoners at the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria by performing lethal operations without anesthesia.Heim has a daughter in Chile and is believed by Zuroff and others to be alive in either Chile or Argentina. Although Heim’s family has said he is dead, German authorities have discovered a bank account with more than $1.5 million that could be claimed by his children if they were to offer proof of his death. They haven’t, and now, believing that the account might still be financing Heim, Germany has created a special task force to track him.

“There’s now a prize of 310,000 euros on his head — 130,000 offered by the German government, another 130,000 offered by us, and this July the Austrians added another 50,000 euros,” Zuroff said.

But even if Heim is found, trying him in court could prove difficult, if not impossible. The extradition process can take years. The Wiesenthal Center’s leaders met last week with government officials in Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Uruguay to plead for cooperation if any war criminals are found.

While old Nazis are still protected by governments, it is especially perverse that now Israelis like Avi Dichter have to fear traveling abroad lest they be arrested as war criminals.

If the Geneva conventions were being observed, the blame for the civilian deaths when Salah Shehada was killed rested with Shehada. As Ralph Peters wrote 5 years ago:

Earlier this week, Israel succeeded in killing Salah Shehada, a savage Hamas mastermind, and one of his top aides. A dozen Palestinian civilians died in the attack, including members of Shehada’s family. The civilian deaths may be lamentable, but they also were justifiable. A terrorist leader used his relatives and neighbors as shields, and they died with him. Their deaths were Shehada’s fault, not Israel’s.

The Geneva conventions specifically address a case where a combatant hides among non-combatants. Hiding in that fashion does not render the combatant immune from attack. Yet there are those who would twist the meaning of the conventions and argue that Dichter, involved in killing someone who targeted non-combatants is a war criminal.

Meanwhile some old Nazis continue to go free.

The good news story of the day

Filed under: Holocaust — Meryl Yourish @ 12:00 pm

There’s a site online for the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous that has stories of Righteous Gentiles who saved Jews from the Holocaust. I think these stories will make an excellent counterpart to the incredibly depressing news of the day. And so, I bring you Alena Divisova, a young woman in the Czech Republic who provided false IDs to save her friends from the Nazis, and protected Jews throughout the war at great risk to herself.

Prague, Czechoslovakia…1942 – After finishing school, Alena Divisova and Charlotte Bloch-Kostenbaum worked as apprentices in a dressmaker’s shop. Charlotte was planning on emigrating to Palestine and was active in a Zionist youth group. Through Charlotte, Alena became friends with many young Jewish people. In 1942, nine of her Jewish friends decided not to report for deportations, but rather to go into hiding or pass as Christians.

Alena provided false identity documents to Charlotte and her friends so that they would be able to walk freely, work “legally,” and be eligible to receive food rations. On several occasions, Alena snuck into the Terezin ghetto to deliver food.

In the fall of 1943, Ernst Kruh, one of the nine who did not report for deportation, returned to Prague from Berlin. He brought Josef Matejicek, a friend that he had met in Berlin, whom the Gestapo had been looking for since 1939. Alena hid the two men for several months. Somehow the authorities learned of Alena’s aid to Josef and arrested her on March 28, 1944. She was imprisoned until May 1945.

Meanwhile, Erna Friesova, another of Alena’s nine friends, and three other Jewish girls, escaped a death transport and traveled back to Prague. Alena’s parents hid the four girls in their weekend hut on the outskirts of Prague.

Of the nine Jewish friends, two died in Auschwitz. The other seven survived the war. Alena is in her 80s and continues to live in Prague.

Honoring the righteous

Filed under: Holocaust — Meryl Yourish @ 1:00 pm

Another good news story for us all.

A Dutch couple posthumously received the highest honor for non-Jews from Israel’s Holocaust center Thursday for their bravery in sheltering a Jewish family from the Nazis during World War II.

Hendrikus and Martha Snapper were named “Righteous Among the Nations” at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem.

[...] As a labor official in the town of Naaldwijk, Hendrikus Snapper was confronted early on with the registration of Jews, the appropriation of Jewish property and the expulsion of Jewish children from public schools, Yad Vashem officials said.

In the summer of 1942, he became active in a local underground group and was put in contact with a Jewish couple, Rosa and Levy de Hartog.

The de Hartogs had received a deportation notice and were frantically searching for a hiding place. The Snappers decided to open their home to Rosa de Hartog, whom they presented as their housekeeper. They found hiding places for Levy de Hartog and their five children, according to Yad Vashem officials.

[...] “Most houses (in the Netherlands) were too small for hiding spaces. People had to take in strangers in clear view and concoct a reason for their presence,” said Johan Snapper, the Snappers’ son, now a professor of German and Dutch studies at the University of California, Berkeley.

The penalty for hiding Jews was a concentration camp or death, Snapper said, speaking at the ceremony. “Our parents understood that.”

In May 1943, a massive recruitment of Dutch men for forced labor in Germany began. Snapper used his position at the labor exchange to forge documents and falsify information for the de Hartogs.

[...] The entire de Hartog family survived the war and was reunited afterward. A photograph of the two families together after liberation was on display during the ceremony.

More than 30 members of the extended Snapper family traveled to Israel for the ceremony. Surviving children of the de Hartogs – Truus de Hartog of the Netherlands, and Salomon de Hartog of Israel – were also present.

“Nothing has ever made a bigger impact on me, as young as I was,” Johan Snapper said of witnessing his parents’ heroism.

Shabbat Shalom.

Faces of evil

Dara Mandle in Contentions

Today, the New York Times makes available photographs obtained by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum from the other side of Auschwitz: not the familiar images of starving prisoners, but new shots of vivacious German officers. It churns the stomach to envision the high life these Germans enjoyed while participating in the murder of over one million people.Karl Höcker, the adjutant to the camp commandant, compiled the scrapbook. The photos, which include the first authenticated images of the notorious Dr. Josef Mengele at the camp, feature Höcker lighting a towering Christmas tree and a singalong of SS men at their Alpine retreat.

In the Times article the writer observes:

For example, one of the Höcker pictures, shot on July 22, 1944, shows a group of cheerful young women who worked as SS communications specialists eating bowls of fresh blueberries. One turns her bowl upside down and makes a mock frown because she has finished her portion. On that day, said Judith Cohen, a historian at the Holocaust museum in Washington, 150 new prisoners arrived at the Birkenau site. Of that group, 21 men and 12 women were selected for work, the rest transported immediately to the gas chambers.

The contrast between the recreational actions of the Germans and their murderous enterprise demonstrates, I guess, the “banality of evil.” It reminds me of Avner Less’s account of interrogating Eichmann.

Adolf Eichmann was captured in Argentina 23 years ago, placed on trial for seven months in Jerusalem and then hanged. He was interrogated by Capt. Avner W. Less for 275 hours. The book is interesting for its solid police work as well as its portrait of Eichmann. Even Captain Less, a Berliner who emigrated to Palestine, uses ”ordinary” and ”normal” to describe Eichmann:”My first reaction when the prisoner finally stood facing us in the khaki shirt and trousers and open sandals was one of disappointment.

The transcripts reveal that this ”ordinary” man was clever without being intelligent. Knowing that his life is at stake, he clings to the tactics of the major defendants at the Nuremberg trials. He lies – until defeated by documentary evidence showing his signature or a record of his presence in concentration camps. When this doesn’t work, he presents himself as a small cog and puts all the blame on others, subordinates as well as superiors. Most often, Eichmann pleads: ”Orders from above.”

Like the Germans at Aucshwitz, Eichmann was seemingly able to switch off his emotions. He could compartmentalize. He could be human. Or he could be the architect of millions of murders.

When I originally read that account I hadn’t thought that his expression of sympathy for Less’s father was a pretense as much as cluelessness, an inability to connect his own actions with their consequences. He was devoid of conscience.

What these pictures remind us is that in Nazi Germany the business of murder wasn’t just acceptable. It was, to the Nazis, just another day at the office. Or worse. Another day at a resort.

A Holocaust tale, 1

Filed under: Anti-Semitism, Holocaust, Iran — Meryl Yourish @ 1:42 pm

Hey there, Andrew Sullivan readers. This story is turning out to be bogus. Read to the end of this post. And check out the main page while you’re here.

Iran is running a TV series about the Iranian ambassadors in France who helped save 500 Jews during the Holocaust.

It is Iran’s version of “Schindler’s List,” a miniseries telling the tale of an Iranian diplomat in Paris who helps Jews escape the Holocaust — and people around the country are riveted, tuning in every week to catch the latest episode.

That’s surprising enough in a country where hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has questioned whether the Holocaust even took place. What’s even more surprising is that government media produced the series, and is airing it on state-run television.

Even without Ahmadinejad’s past comments, the series would be a surprise. The Holocaust is rarely mentioned in state media in Iran, school textbooks don’t discuss it and Iranians have little information about it.

Yet the series, titled “Zero Degree Turn,” is clearly sympathetic to the Jews’ plight during World War II. Scenes show men, women and children with yellow stars on their clothes being taken forcibly out of their homes and loaded into trucks by Nazi soldiers.

The series could not have aired without being condoned by Iran’s clerical leadership. The state broadcaster is under the control of the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khomenei, who has final say in all matters inside Iran.

[...] The show’s appearance now may reflect an attempt by Iran’s leadership to moderate its image as anti-Semitic and to underline a distinction that Iranian officials often make — that their conflict is with Israel, not with the Jewish people.

I can’t quite figure out why the mullahs did this, either. If they’re doing it to prove that Iran is not anti-Semitic, they’ve unwittingly done just about the best thing they could possibly have done to make Jews more sympathetic in Israel. And that seems to be how the series is affecting Iranians.

“Once, I wept when I learned through the film what a dreadful destiny the small nation had during the World War, in the heart of so-called civilized Europe,” said Mahboubeh Rahamati, a Tehran bank teller.

Kazem Gharibi said he watches the series every Monday on a TV in his grocery store.

“Through this film, I understood that Jews had a hard time in the war — helpless and desperate, as we were when Iraq imposed war on us,” he said, referring to the 8-year Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.

The series began in April with a love story between Parsa, the Embassy employee, and a French Jew, Sara Stroke, in the early 1940s — and many viewers say the love story pulls them as much as any history.

This is great. An Iranian “Roots” moment. Please allow me to step into Snoopy the Goon mode and thank our Zionist agents in Iranian state TV for making this happen.

Apparently, the AP got everything wrong. A Hot Air reader updates us:

* the major point of the series is that it was allegedly the German Jews themselves who collaborated with Hitler to kill those Jews who opposed the re-settlement of Palestine
* for example, a plot line shows that a Jewish researcher is in possession of documents that prove the connection between Hitler and Zionists
* the credits of each episode feature the work of anti-Semite Roger Garaudy as a “historical source”
* “historical adviser” to the series is Holocaust denier Abdollah Shahbazi who openly admits in his blog that he’s a denier
* director and screenwriter Hassan Fatthi alleged to SPIEGEL that according to “historical evidence” a majority of Hitler’s victims were those who opposed the re-settlement of Palestine

Well, that solves the mystery. The AP probably bought the Iranian propaganda line and didn’t have a Farsi translator check out the show.

Effing morons.
