PETA kills animals

Looks like PETA’s kill rate is higher than any animal shelter in the country. One caveat: I need to see the original report. The Center for Consumer Freedom is a group with an anti-PETA agenda that gets its money from interest groups whose interest is generally the opposite of the subject of its articles. That said, if this is true, PETA has a 97% kill rate. Yes, ninety-seven percent.

In official report filed by PETA itself shows that the animal rights group put to death nearly every dog, cat, and other pet it took in for adoption in 2006. During that year, the well-known animal rights group managed to find adoptive homes for just 12 animals. Not counting pets brought to PETA for spaying or neutering, the organization killed 2,981 of the 3,061 “companion animals” it took in. According to VDACS, the average euthanasia rate for humane societies in Virginia was 34.7 percent in 2006. PETA’s “kill rate” was 97.4 percent.

I don’t have the time today, but I’ll try to find the actual report and see how much of the above is true.

  1. It’s hard to find a more misguided class of people than militant animal rights activists. Unfortunately I doubt that anyone really deep into PETA and associated groups will ever hear anything remotely like that headline.

  2. This is the most recent article in a long long series. Consumer Freedom also runs PetaKillsAnimals.com, which has been documenting their antics for years. Some of PETA’s activities made the national news last year.

PETA is interested in turning the human population of the US into vegetarians, and outlawing pet ownership, but they are doing it for their own political reasons, not out of any actual concern for animal welfare.

(Oh, and while we’re on the subject, it’s also worth noting that the Humane Society of the United States is an animal-rights group closely tied to PETA. They are in no way associated with the American Humane Society, a legitimate and well-respected animal welfare organization. Unfortunately, quite a lot of well-meaning contributors don’t realize that these two different groups have radically different goals.)

  3. Tracy says:

If you were to contact Peta, you would discover that they don’t have an animal shelter and do not do animal adoptions.

The high kill rate is due to accepting old, sick and injured animals from people who can’t afford to have them euthanized at a vet’s office and from animal shelters in North Carolina that use inhumane means to euthanize their animals.

The CCF’s motives are to try to destroy the credibility of their opponents in any underhanded way possible.

The bottom line is that animal organizations, such as Peta, do care about animals. In fact, many (if not all) of Peta’s employees are vegan.

    Really?

Are you telling me that over 90 percent of the animals they are given are old/sick/injured?

    I SERIOUSLY doubt that.

And given that PETA members have been CAUGHT in the past removing pet tags so owners could never be found for lost pets, AND disposing of recently “saved” animals that they adopted out of shelters, and immediately KILLED, I SERIOUSLY doubt they PETA “Cares” about pets at all.

Your own comment shows what you “think” about everyone else.

I never knew that to REALLY care about animals you have to be a vegan….

The REAL bottom line is that PETA wants not just their employees but EVERYONE to be vegan, and that dog just ain’t gonna hunt.

  5. Alex Bensky says:

This should remind us all that Meryl’s annual EATAPETA day is fast approaching. Mmm, I can almost taste the veal already…or lamb, depending on whether at the moment I think fluffy little lambs or sad-eyed little calves are cuter.

  6. Cameron says:

Given that the CCF has used documented statements from PETA to back up their arguments, I’m more inclined to listen to them.

Also, if PETA can explain why their President uses insulin made from animal products and not see that as hypocritical, I might be more inclined to listen to them.

And I agree with Long_Rifle: I have doubts that the animals they destroyed were all old or infirm.

  7. David says:

Original reports filed by PETA with the Virginia government:

    http://www.petakillsanimals.com/downloads/PetaKillsAnimals.pdf

Subtract out the spay-neuter animals (“returned to owner”) and you’ll reach the same conclusion as the Center for Consumer Freedom.

  8. BadKarma says:

PETA and the HSUS are the propaganda arms of the Veganist Jihad. None – I repeat – NONE of these wingnuts give a fat damn about animals. Their sole goal is the forcible veganziation of the entire world, followed by the extinction of the entire human race (exept themselves, of course…) by hunger and famine.

  9. Cameron says:

And yet when you point out the deaths of wild animals that are caused by agriculture, you get these blank looks from PETA…

  10. Jerry says:

The local animal shelter, Angels for Animals, in Columbiana, OH has a unique policy. They seem to like cats more than dogs, so they take each dog that they take in and place it with a mean cat.(Their description) If the dog exhibits “any”,aggressive behavior in response to this provocation, it is euthanasized. Hardly seems fair, but they say the dog could not be trusted in a family setting.

  11. Peter says:

A front group that defends veal, foie gras, fur, hunting, trapping and vivisection is against humanely euthanizing unwanted pets. Isn’t THAT hypocritical? What the “Center for Consumer Freedom” doesn’t mention is that PETA stepped in because rural North Carolina shelters were gassing and shooting these animals.

“No-kill” shelters sound like a nice alternative, but they’re very selective and fill up very quickly. PETA doesn’t even run a shelter, it just gets called in to do everyone else’s dirty work.

Why don’t you meat-eaters start your own group: “Meat Eaters Against Pet Euthanasia and Hypocrisy.”

  12. Pat says:

Everybody needs to get this info into the mainstream press so all can hear and understand what peta and hsus is all about. They have so many little kids and ignorant people donating to their so called noble cause. Peta has said it is cheaper for them to kill the animals and not have to house them or feed them so they have more money for advertising like putting up billboards and handing out flyers to little kids at school.

  13. Chris R. says:

Would the deaths of these animals be less offensive if they were turned into fur coats, or meals for people who choose to eat cats and dogs, or if they were used in lab experiments? Would it be better if they died of old age in an animal shelter’s cage? The people who are really to blame are irresponsible pet owners who don’t spay and neuter, and people who buy from breeders. It’s a fantasy to believe that all stray animals – even the cute, healthy ones – will find a happy home.
