When the world is filled with almost nothing but bad news, post cat pictures.

Tig and Gracie on the AC unit

This was taken about a week ago, a rare twofer of the pair of them on the air conditioning unit. The unit is off. They don’t like it when it rumbles. Actually, Gracie was there first, and I got Tig to jump up in the hopes of getting the two of them together. She doesn’t like being near Tig, because he’s usually a jerk to her. This is a picture of Gracie moments afterward:

She’d rather be by herself. And yes, that’s her slightly ticked-off look. Tig was trying to get on her AC unit, you see. Plus, she’s smart enough to know that when I take her picture, there’s a flash. But not smart enough to know that I don’t use it in the daytime.

Attention, techies

Okay. This is partly because of my obsessive-compulsive thing and my refusal to simply forward the messages to my gmail account, but I’m trying to get the last few emails that seem unable to resolve the new DNS and are landing in my old hosting service’s mailbox. What I need to do is download these emails and then blow away that mailbox. Or not—the DNS has apparently not fully resolved, if emails are landing there still.

Anyway, normally, I just put “yourish.com” and port 110 in the server account settings, but obviously I can’t do that as it’s resolved to my new host. So I tried the IP address of the old host, but I’m not quite sure whether or not to add the :2082 to the IP address, or what I need to do in order to download the emails to my Thunderbird account.

Does anyone out there know the answers? Or can you point me to a page on the internet where I can find them?

Baby Assad’s a Republican

According to Reuters, the Dorktator is a Republican.

(Update: Okay, a lot of people think that (R) means “right”. And it probably does. But it’s still funny.)

Seriously. And since that link will ultimately break, there’s a screenshot.

East is east, and west is west, and never the twain shall meet.

Don’t try this at home, Nancy Pelosi

So, Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker who would be King President, totally blew her little Middle East peacemaking trip. Turns out she couldn’t even pass along a simple message correctly.

The Prime Minister’s Office has strongly denied that Israel relayed a message to Syria, accepting its calls to renew peace negotiations.

The bureau responded to questions raised yesterday by a statement made by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, following a meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad. Pelosi said she had relayed a message from Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, to the effect that Israel was ready for peace talks with Syria.

The Prime Minister’s Office was quick to issue a denial, stating that “what was discussed with the House speaker did not include any change in Israel’s policy, as it has been presented to international parties involved in the matter.”

In a special statement of clarification, the bureau stressed that Olmert had told Pelosi that Israel continued to regard Syria as “part of the axis of evil and a party encouraging terrorism in the entire Middle East.”

According to sources at the Prime Minister’s Office, “Pelosi took part of the things that were said in the meeting, and used what suited her.”

When even the WaPo says you’re a maroon, you have to think that maybe, just maybe, Pelosi screwed up.

Ms. Pelosi was criticized by President Bush for visiting Damascus at a time when the administration — rightly or wrongly — has frozen high-level contacts with Syria. Mr. Bush said that thanks to the speaker’s freelancing Mr. Assad was getting mixed messages from the United States. Ms. Pelosi responded by pointing out that Republican congressmen had visited Syria without drawing presidential censure. That’s true enough — but those other congressmen didn’t try to introduce a new U.S. diplomatic initiative in the Middle East. “We came in friendship, hope, and determined that the road to Damascus is a road to peace,” Ms. Pelosi grandly declared.

Never mind that that statement is ludicrous: As any diplomat with knowledge of the region could have told Ms. Pelosi, Mr. Assad is a corrupt thug whose overriding priority at the moment is not peace with Israel but heading off U.N. charges that he orchestrated the murder of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri. The really striking development here is the attempt by a Democratic congressional leader to substitute her own foreign policy for that of a sitting Republican president. Two weeks ago Ms. Pelosi rammed legislation through the House of Representatives that would strip Mr. Bush of his authority as commander in chief to manage troop movements in Iraq. Now she is attempting to introduce a new Middle East policy that directly conflicts with that of the president. We have found much to criticize in Mr. Bush’s military strategy and regional diplomacy. But Ms. Pelosi’s attempt to establish a shadow presidency is not only counterproductive, it is foolish.

As for Baby Assad, the Dorktator: He’ll be milking this one for the next ten years. I have but one final comment to make, Speaker Pelosi: Presidential powers.

He shall have power, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, to make treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur

That’s PRESIDENT. PRES-I-DENT.

It’s from the Constitution. You should read it sometime.

Passover links

First, the funny videos:

Manischewitzville, thanks to Janet

And then, a two-minute film on the many uses of matzoh.

Now, for the newbie, Judaism 101’s page on Passover (known as Pesach in Hebrew).

An article on why even unaffiliated Jews celebrate Passover. It’s actually a rather depressing article, be forewarned. Jews complaining that Judaism is hard. Well, yeah. If it was easy, the world would be Jewish.

An article in Slate that discusses how Passover is meaningful without being, well, a meaningful article. (They really don’t do religion well at Slate.)

Also on Slate: The two-minute Haggadah. My grandfather would not approve.

94 percent of Israeli Jews keep Passover. More than 80% of Jews around the world at least attend a Seder, a higher level than the number of affiliated Jews (see above).

Via Judith, Passover with the Barry Sisters. Chag Sameach, a happy and meaningful Pesach to all of my readers who celebrate Pesach.

IDF Dave sent me this: A Japanese video on how to break a matzoh in half. Huh. And to think, a Ginsu knife won’t do it.

Red, white, and Gracie

My mother has been visiting since last Thursday, and one of the consequences was that Gracie’s tissue-paper nest was tossed out (it was old, anyway), and there was no replacement for the last week.

Until tonight, after Mom left, when I looked over at the empty sofa and realized that it needed something on it. Something—orange. So I went in search of some new tissue paper for Gracie, found a little bit of color, put it on the sofa, and called her over. She leaped up, rolled a few times, got a bellyrub, and mrowed happily before purring mightily and settling down.

And here is what she looked like a little later, after a nap. (She’s rustling happily around in the paper as I type this.)

Gracie is a very happy girl tonight.
