My AR has a “red dot” sight not a laser. Common mistake.
The difference?
A laser actually projects a beam of light onto the target.
A red dot superimposes a dot (or other reticle) on a transparent screen through which the shooter looks. The dot “floats” in the field of view and allows for quick aiming.
