I imagine that in the early 1930’s the reform Jews of Germany that had worked so hard to assimilate and be accepted by their “fatherland” were shocked at what was about to happen to them.

Every generation seems to believe that the age old disease of Anti-Semitism is something that happened before their nation’s enlightenment, and cannot, and will not happen to them.
