First of all, at least three of the articles were not from the regular Dead Tree Version. So it's a little less than 18, plus I'm not certain that Chappatte's cartoon appeared in the American version or just the IHT. Still, I'd grant that 14 articles in one month is a lot for a non-domestic issue.
What was driving things this month was Obama's visit to Israel. (In months with a significant news event there will be more opinion pieces. October and November of 2012 come to mind. October because of the lead up to the election. November because of Pillar of Defense.)
Honest Reporting made an apt observation:
While the New York Times had 75 editorials, columns, and op-eds concerning Israel in 2012, the Washington Post only ran about one-third as many. This smaller number of opinion pieces was much more representative of diverse views of the conflict than those of the Times. Several opinion pieces, unlike in the New York Times, either expressed support or at the very least, understanding for the Israeli position. Several were even critical of Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian Authority.
Maybe the Times is obsessed. The original Sulzberger was a founder of the American Council for Judaism. I'd suggest that - with a few exceptions - his spirit informs the editorial (and reportorial) positions of the Times.

There's a larger point to be made here. With all the issues in the world, why does Israel so dominate the New York Times editorial pages?

What's the tally on Syria and North Korea, I wonder?
