"If you just landed from Mars, you might think that Israel is the only country that has killed civilians in war — never Hamas, never Hezbollah, never Turkey, never Iran, never Syria, never America."

Never America? Has Friedman been living on Mars since 2001? America gets just as much flack about accidental killing of civilians in war as Israel does. As an example, look at the popularity of that lie about "one million Iraqia killed by America since 2003." The reason for such outre, mendacious criticism of America is the same as outre, mendacious criticism of Israel, an attempt to delegitemize the country and its efforts to fight against the jihadists. And a lot of our leftist/liberal elites are neck deep in both attempts.

Anti-Americanism and antisemitism have become two sides of the same coin in today's world. With rare exceptions, if you scratch an antisemite you'll find an anti-American as well, and vice versa. We shall stand or fall together.

Sadly, the only difference Friedman suggests between constructive and destructive criticism seems to be that you preface your destructive comments with expressions of understanding -- an understanding that need not inform the criticism at all. But a constructive criticism must first follow a simple rule: don't be destructive. And that is what he seems to miss completely.
