Gary, you'e got it. In dealing with Israel and for that matter threats to Jews anywhere, everything is clear if you understand that "disproportionate" is a synonym for "effective."

What I would have liked to seefrom the Goldstone report is a clear definition of what in the circumstances prevailing Goldstone would have considered proportionate force. The lack thereof is just another indication--I assume no one reading this blog needs one--that the purpose of the report was to castigate Israel, not to suggest what it should have done.

The quickest and easiest way to prove "disproportionate force" is BS, is to ask the idiot, "If I can only kill the same amount of people my enemy kills, how does the war ever end? How do you win?"

Hamas has the goals of the destruction of Israel and the genocide of its Jewish inhabitants. What proportional force should be used to prevent that? To my mind, Israel used disproportionately weak force against Hamas. Israel should have killed every Hamas militant or other member in Gaza, lest Hamas find the means to carry out its evil goals sometime in the future. It would be no different than killing the militants of a resurgent Nazi movement that made war on Israel from someplace.

As for the Arabs of Gaza, Hamas is their chosen ruler and they are complicit in its criminal war against Israel. If they object to suffering for its war against Israel, as Hamas militants hide among them or uses their homes, schools, and mosques as fighting positions, they should get rid of Hamas. The responsibility for any damage and casualties resulting from Hamas using such buildings as fighting positions lies with Hamas. Look it up in the Fourth Geneva Conventions. Use of such buildings removes their protection, and hiding military personnel among civilians means the side doing that is responsible for any casualties the other side inflicts on those civilians in trying to hit the military targets among them.

I read that Goldstone has his eye on becoming UN Sec Gen. Ah Richard, it profiteth a man not to sell his soul for the world, but for the Sec Gen's corner office?
