OK It was just that the way you said it implied that someone did not know. Unfortunately, there are people who do not realize a lot of things regarding Judaism so people who do know should always be careful to say them explicitly. I suppose it is petty of me, but it always bothers me when someone appears to mistake the party for the actual event. Somehow saying "A person finally became bar (or bat) mitzvah at age X" rather than saying "celebrated" just rubs me the wrong way, even when I know what is really meant.

In reply to sabbahillel. I know that. And so, Sabba Hillel, did the twins. All of my students knew that. It was a subject of some envy back in the day. The boys were extremely annoyed at the unfairness of girls being considered adults a year before them. The girls, of course, smirked and said it was because girls are more mature than boys. And when they asked me why, I told them to ask the rabbi.

Of course, they really didn’t have it on the same day. They were a year apart. She had her bat mitzvah last year. Just because their parents decided to delay and make the party on the same day does not change the actual facts.
