Some time in the late eighties Bishop Tutu was in Detroit and according to the newspaper at one of his stops he was asked about his stance on Israel, which can fairly be termed “critical.” We expect more from the Jews because they have suffered, he said.

Interesting. His own people have suffered but he doesn’t hold them to a higher standard. American blacks have indisputablysuffered but he doesn’t seem to hold them to a higher standard. Just Israel. I wonder why…all right, I don’t wonder.

Yet again I am reminded of Eric Hoffer’s remark that, “Alone among the peoples of the world, Jews are expected to act like Christians.”
