The first of the quotations above from Isaac Bashevis Singer is indeed from one of his stories. But the second one is from a foreword he wrote to “Vegetarianism: A Way of Life”, by Dudley Giehl. It seems Singer believed there was a legitimate parallel to be drawn between the way we typically treat animals raised for food and the treatment of people in concentration camps. Singer said he was a vegetarian for reasons of health — the health of the animals. He believed that compassion for the weak and vulnerable was not something that could be restricted in its application to other humans.

I ate meat in honor of the day, and skritched a few hard-core carnivores (with whiskers, fur and paws) for good measure. Actually, I think we should add that to IEATAPETA Day: eat meat, and skritch carnivores.

And here come the PETA lies. Singer never uttered those quotes. He wrote them in a novel. His fictional character said them. And you know, my eating meat isn't showing contempt for Singer. It's my choice to live as I please.

I don’t know, Volcano. I certainly approve of as much meat-eating as possible tomorrow, but wild animals–they sort of expect to get killed and eaten. I think the true spirit of EATAPETA Day is expressed by “the more adorable, the more likely it should be on your menu.”

And as I’ve said elsewhere, people like Newkirk tend to have a certain constellation of political ideas, and just to show where I stand with respect to those ideas, I’m having lunch at McDonald’s.

I stopped by Exotic Meats ( http://www.exoticmeats.com/home.aspx ) in San Antonio today and picked up some wild boar bacon, a buffalo roast, and some ostrich patties. Looks like it’s going to be a beautiful day for grilling tomorrow.
