The Communists did that too. Remember the Japanese the North Koreans kidnapped to act as trainers for their spies? The Soviets had them too, including Americans. That’s the way these totalitarians behave.

If the guy is in a prison on the Iraq border and he has American citizenship, I think it would be a nice gesture if American Special Forces raided that prison, in the spirit of the Son Tay raid, and rescued him (and any other prisoners they find there). Alas, I suspect it will not be done, but it would be an excellent bit of negotiation with Syria. It might not be the way James Baker sees negotiations with his old buddies the Ba’athist fascists going, but it would send a message in the only language Baby Assad the Dorktator and his consiglieri understand.
