IDF concludes deterrence has been achieved

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel — Tags: , , — Meryl Yourish @ 9:14 am

Ha’aretz has an analysis that says those of us who think Hamas hasn’t been cowed are wrong.

His soldiers explained that, if it boils down to choosing between their own lives and Palestinian houses, the choice is clear. Lt. Col. Cohen of Givati told Haaretz that, in his view, Hamas is at fault, for having booby-trapping populated buildings.

The IDF’s progress this week was evident mainly in the sector where the regular Paratroops brigade is operating, in northern Gaza City – the place where the forces encountered the toughest resistance. Paratroop officers described the house-to-house searches: Everywhere they turned, they found an opening to a tunnel, a Qassam launcher, an RPG (rocket-propelled grenade) launcher or a booby-trapped door.

The brigade commander is Col. Hertzi Halevy, a former Sayeret Matkal commander. When Halevy, who transferred from the Paratroops to the unit in the early 1990s, returned to the Paratroops as their commander, he was maligned by some for his rigidity and aloofness. This war has highlighted the usefulness of his cool temper and thoughtful leadership. Other brigade commanders have also cemented their leadership in Gaza.

The officers in the field see eye to eye with Military Intelligence officials: Deterrence has been achieved. This is the “Dahiya Doctrine,” which GOC Northern Command Maj. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot spoke of a few months before the war. The destruction in Gaza is reminiscent of what the air force did to Beirut’s Shi’ite Dahiya quarter two and a half years ago. Israel has made it clear that it is capable of inflicting enormous damage if provoked in such a way that it feels compelled to respond.

Read the whole thing. It’s a world of information and fascinating analysis:

The Israeli operation in Gaza was completely disproportional. But though it might not meet the criteria of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, in the tough neighborhood we live in, the message appears to have gotten across. The deterrence that has worked in Lebanon for the past two and a half years, after a failed war, may also work in Gaza, where the results have been completely different, and much better from Israel’s standpoint.

This matches what Israel Network News reports a captured terrorist said:

“Hamas took a gamble. We thought, at worst Israel will come and do something from the air – something superficial. They’ll come in and go out. We never thought that we would reach the point where fear will swallow the heart and the feet will want to flee. You [Israel] are fighting like you fought in ‘48. What got into you all of a sudden?”

It is 1948. World leaders are calling for the end of Israel, for Israel to be thrown out of the UN, and for boycotts and the delegitimization of Israel. Jews all over the world are being threatened. And the Jewish State is fighting for its existence. Hamas isn’t an existential threat? Yes it is. When a terrorist group that has launched thousands of rockets since it took over the Gaza Strip can draw the world’s sympathy instead of its opprobrium, Israel’s existence is at stake. When “protesters” all over the world call Israel an illegitimate state, Israel’s existence is at stake. When Iran rushes on to a nuclear bomb, and the world does nothing—Israel’s existence is at stake.

Hamas refuses truce, media refuses to notice

Filed under: AP Media Bias, Gaza, Hamas, Israel — Tags: , , , , — Meryl Yourish @ 9:00 am

It’s amazing how the AP can supply the Jerusalem Post with the information that Hamas will not accept the cease fire in a small item, but cannot put that same information in its main story that goes out over thousands of newswires.

Hamas’s top political chief says his movement will not accept Israel’s demands for a cease-fire and insists the siege on Gaza must be lifted before Hamas will halt rocket attacks.

Khaled Mashaal has asked a gathering of Arab leaders in the Qatari capital on Friday to back Hamas in its demands, to announce a boycott of Israel and cut off any ties with the Jewish state.

Mashaal says Hamas is sticking by its demands that a border openings into the Gaza Strip must be opened immediately before it will stop rocket attacks.

He says Hamas “will not accept Israel’s conditions” for a cease-fire. Israel has demanded a total halt to Hamas rockets and guarantees Hamas cannot rearm.

The AP can, however, include in its main story the call by the UN Secretary General for a unilateral Israeli cease fire. In fact, it titles that story “UN chief urges unilateral Israeli cease-fire.” Just in case you missed the fact that the world is calling on Israel to cease its fire, but not Hamas. And the AP also make sure that it drops the Israeli reasons for refusal down below the third paragraph, knowing full well that most local papers include only the first three to five paragraphs of an AP wire story in their “World News” sections. Take a look at the first three grafs.

The U.N. chief urged Israel Friday to declare a unilateral cease-fire in Gaza, but Israel rebuffed the idea as its diplomats headed for Egypt and the United States in what appeared to be a final push toward a truce.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon floated the idea during a visit to the West Bank on his Mideast mission to try to stop Israel’s three-week-old offensive against Hamas militants who have been firing rockets from Gaza for years.

“I strongly urge Israeli leadership and government to declare a cease-fire unilaterally,” Ban said from Ramallah, the seat of the West Bank government of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, a fierce rival of Hamas. “It’s time to think about a unilateral cease-fire from the Israeli government.”

Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev dismissed the idea.

“I don’t believe that there’s a logical expectation in the international community that Israel unilaterally cease fire while Hamas would continue to target cities, trying to kill our people,” he said.

Interestingly, the AP does not quote Ban on calling on Hamas to cease its fire unilaterally. Nor is there any report of Ban going to Syria to talk to Khaled Mashaal about stopping the rocketing of the Israeli civilian population. Not that I expect him to. The world has never really tried to stop the enemies of the Jews from destroying the Jews, and it never will. That would be why the State of Israel was established.

But the good news is: Hamas’ irredentism is going to allow the IDF to do its job properly this time around. The rockets hit more Israeli civilians today. And they show no signs of stopping. The job isn’t finished.

The Egyptian truce: Hamas wins

Israel and Hamas have supposedly agreed to a two-week truce.

According to the sources, the two sides are expected to agree on a ceasefire which will likely begin within 72 hours and last up to two weeks.

During this period of time, the parties will discuss the Israel Defense Forces’ withdrawal from Gaza and the withdrawal’s timing. Palestinian sources estimated that the pullback into Israel would be swift.

According to the sources, on the issue of the supervision mechanism it has been agreed that the international forces’ presence would be on the Palestinian side of the Philadelphi route.

If this is true, then Hamas won.

The sources said that the renewed lull will last at least a year, and is expected to last even longer. According to the sources, a “weakened” Hamas will agree to a longer lull in order to recover from the current conflict.

If the agreement is executed, the agreement is expected to provide an answer to the Israeli demands in terms of the smuggling issue, the rocket fire and a serious discussion on the Shalit issue.

Hamas will gain the reopening of the crossings, the removal of the blockade and an official role at the crossings. Abbas will receive renewed access to the Strip, only at the crossings at first, and Egypt will be able to open the Rafah crossing.

That’s everything they asked for. What was the point of the Gaza war, then? To kill a few Hamas terrorists? To make the world hate Israel even more? If this is true, if Israel is lifting the blockade and allowing Hamas to run the crossings, then it truly is the beginning of the end of the State of Israel, because her leaders have lost all heart to defend their nation against the Iranian Islamists. How can the Egyptians stop smuggling if Hamas has a role in the crossings? Why does Israel think that anything will be different when the Philadelphi corridor is controlled by international forces? That’s what happened three years ago. Hamas took it over then, and will take it over now.

Israel is defeated. All I can hope for is that this article is wrong.

Hamas: Still hurting, still needing to be destroyed

The IDF got a big fish.

Hamas’ interior minister, Said Siam, considered one of the most senior members of the Palestinian group’s leadership, was killed Thursday afternoon in an Israeli air strike on his brother’s home in Gaza City, the Israel Defense Forces said.

I’d give my kitties tuna for the Tuna for Terrorists program, but they already got some for the Gracie Went to the Vet program.

But wait, that’s not all:

The defense establishment said Siam’s brother Ayad and the head of Hamas’ security organization in Gaza, Salah Abu Sharah, were also killed in the strike. Hamas members confirmed that Siam and his brother were killed, but claimed that the third casualty was Siam’s son.

So who was this guy, and what did he do? A lot.

Siam, 50, is the most senior Hamas figure assassinated in Operation Cast Lead so far, and is the most senior Hamas figure killed by Israel since the assassination of Dr. Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi in April 2004.

Siam was the person who built Hamas’ special executive force, which was the main focus of friction and dispute between the Palestinian Authority and Hamas as the Hamas government took power, and he officially led the organization’s takeover of the Gaza Strip.

Israel should refuse a cease fire until they get the rest of the leadership. Of course, they won’t refuse.

According to diplomatic sources in Egypt, Israel gave the ceasefire offered in Cairo a “green light”, just one day after Hamas approved the plan’s principle points.

Gilad is set to brief Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni on his the visit.

Sources in Jerusalem said the briefing may yield a decision on whether to approve the Egyptian initiative and a subsequent withdrawal from Gaza, or to continue the offensive in the Strip. The security cabinet is scheduled to debate the decision Friday morning.

Stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. The IDF has the chance to do some real damage to Hamas, damage that could be permanent. Hamas is still shelling Israeli cities, and they’re still using long-range missiles. They finally got lucky and hurt a woman and child badly. There’s a picture at the link of the car that got hit. This is what a Grad rocket does. Hamas has many more—the IDF hasn’t destroyed Hamas rocket stockpiles yet.

The only good news about all this is that Hamas has managed to refuse to abide by all cease fires to date. Here’s hoping they do the same, and let the IDF go on about its business.

In the wake of a progressively materializing ceasefire, IDF commanders in Gaza told soldiers Thursday to continue to seek out their targets and destroy them with full force.

[...] Despite reports that Israel was leaning towards accepting the Egyptian ceasefire proposal in Gaza, the army appeared to be stepping up its offensive, and an officer and two soldiers were lightly injured in the operations. They were evacuated to Israel for treatment.

Too bad the IDF can’t go into the basement of the Shifa Hospital, where most senior Hamasniks are hiding. Or in tunnels, like rats in sewers. And sometimes, in their own homes. Where the IDF can get them. That was good intel. May the Gazans continue to inform on the leadership that brought this war on them.

Mark Regev responds to biased CNN anchor

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel — Tags: , , — Meryl Yourish @ 1:00 pm

Watch this video, and see how many times the CNN anchor takes as truth the Palestinian claims that the IDF deliberately targeted the UN building that was hit earlier today.

For instance, the anchor says that Israel was using white phosphorous shells. Mark Regev denies this, points out that the ICRC has documented that Israel is not using white phosphorous illegally, and that Hamas fired a white phosphorous shell at Israel. The anchor then says, “But only Israel is firing white phosphorous shells” immediately after Regev just told him Hamas is firing them.

Barak told Ban that “Hamas was using Palestinian civilians as human shields and is opening fire at IDF forces from areas that are adjacent to UN facilities.

Not that it will make a difference.

No cease fire yet

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel — Tags: , , — Meryl Yourish @ 8:00 am

The IDF has a lot more work to do, but there doesn’t seem to be a willingness from Hamas to agree to a cease fire yet.

Muhammad Nazal, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, told al-Jazeera, “We have not accepted the Egyptian ceasefire initiative, but we have not rejected it either. We presented our reservations about the proposal and if they are not taken into account – we cannot accept it.”

Nazal said that in his opinion “the talk of progress only exists in the media,” and stressed that “Hamas is unwilling to agree on a permanent ceasefire because the significance of this would be to halt the resistance.”

Good. Because the job isn’t finished.

IDF officers testified to the destruction in Gaza. Staff-Sergeant Oron Pinto said Hamas operatives “are running away, afraid to fight us face to face or have any contact with us.”

Sergeant Avi Aschal said the damage “may be excessive”, but that Hamas could only blame itself. “They booby trapped all of the houses and the yards and even their own explosive devices. For me it’s a simple dilemma: Either my soldiers or their buildings, and you can see for yourselves what the answer is.”

However, according to assessments Hamas is still far from the obliteration many had hoped for. GOC Southern Command Yoav Galant heard from various brigade commanders leading the offensive, who told him their troops were motivated and willing to continue the operation.

This is one case where Hamas’ intransigence is actually working for Israel.

Iranian ship turned back by Israel and Egypt

Filed under: AP Media Bias, Gaza, Hamas, Iran — Tags: , , — Meryl Yourish @ 9:30 am

The Israelis turned back an enemy nation’s ship from entering Gaza. Watch this get spun as an anti-humanitarian move by Israel.

An Iranian aid ship tried to break the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip for the second time Wednesday. Israel Defense Forces sources confirmed that Navy ships contacted the boat’s crew and ordered them to turn back.

Funny, the AP report doesn’t include this information at all:

The boat was making its way to Gaza through the Suez Canal. It docked at Egypt’s Port Said on Tuesday evening and the crew attempted to unload the goods on the deck, but the Egyptians turned them down. The ship then continued towards Gaza.

But the AP does spin this anti-Israel in the lead. It takes as fact the Iranian state claims that there are only “humanitarian” supplies on this ship. Uh-huh. Wonder how many Fajr missiles you can hide in a 2,000 ton cargo?

The Israeli navy intercepted an Iranian ship loaded with medicine, food and clothing destined for Gaza and forced the vessel to Egypt instead, Iran’s state television reported Wednesday.

Meanwhile, in a gesture of support with the Palestinians in Gaza, Iran’s top leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a religious opinion, or fatwa, declaring the purchase of any Israeli goods or trade with Israeli companies to be forbidden.

Israel’s offensive in Gaza, which Palestinian medical officials say has killed more than 940 Palestinians since Dec. 27, has sparked outrage in Iran and throughout the Muslim world. Israel has said it launched its campaign to stop rocket fire aimed at civilians in southern Israeli towns by the militant group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip. Iran is Hamas’ main backer, providing it political and financial support, though Tehran denies sending the organization weapons.

Right. Tehran denies it, but there is ample proof that the terrorists in Gaza use Iranian-supplied weapons to kill Israelis.

The Egyptians deny the Iranians permission to unload the cargo, but it’s Israel that’s keeping “humanitarian equipment” out of Gaza. It’s a war zone.

Israeli military officials said the ship was prevented from reaching Gaza as part of a general naval blockade meant to prevent weapons smuggling, and not due to the boat’s Iranian origins.

All right, someone’s lying there. Let’s face it. No way an Iranian ship will ever get Israeli permission to land in Gaza. Nor should it.

Hamas to CSM: We won’t stop firing rockets, even with a truce

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Media Bias, Terrorism — Tags: , , , — Meryl Yourish @ 5:00 pm

Hamas is stating flatly that they will never stop attacking Israel.

Abu Marzook: Hamas has held the same position since Israel’s aggression began. We have three conditions for any peace initiative coming from any state. First of all, the aggression of the Israelis should stop. All of the [border crossings] should be opened, including the gate of Rafah between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. Finally, Israel has to withdraw from the Gaza strip. We are not saying we will stop firing rockets from the Gaza strip to Israel. We are only talking about stopping the aggression from the Israelis against the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.

When others talk about a cease-fire, they are saying all military operations should stop. But we are sending a message [by firing rockets, which is:] “We will not surrender. We have to fight the Israelis and we will win this battle.” We know we are going to lose a lot of people from our side, but we are going to win inshallah [God willing].

If that name sounds familiar to you, it’s because the Los Angeles Times let Marzook use their op-ed page to present his lies that Hamas is an organization that Israel simply refuses to treat with. Seven days ago, Marzook wrote this:

The truce failed because Israel will not open Gaza’s borders, because Israel would rather be a jailer than a neighbor, and because its intransigent leadership forestalls Palestinian destiny and will not make peace with history.

Yesterday, he said this:

We are not saying we will stop firing rockets from the Gaza strip to Israel. We are only talking about stopping the aggression from the Israelis against the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.

Funny how the world manages to turn its eyes away from those facts.

“We are all Hamas.” That incredibly stupid slogan needs to be changed. The next time you hear it chanted, substitute “We are all stupid for supporting a terrorist, rejectionist organization” and you’ll be closer to the truth.

Report from the front

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel — Tags: , , — Meryl Yourish @ 1:00 am

This is what the IDF soldiers are dealing with in Gaza:

Lt.-Col. Cohen has good reasons to want his soldiers to focus on the enemy. In one of the recent days a battalion force encountered three terrorists emerging from a tunnel.

“We responded immediately and caused the tunnel to collapse over them,” he says. “No one was injured from the sniper fire. There was also a suicide bomber on a motorcycle, who disappeared into a house’s backyard. We encircled the house and hit him from afar.”

The IDF is doing well in every matchup with Hamas. Hamas wants to kill Israeli soldiers from afar, as they claim Israel is doing to them. And yet, there is video of close fighting at Elder of Ziyon’s blog that must be seen to be believed. Proof positive that the IDF is using human shields. Think Amnesty will get them on this one? (Really. Click the link. You’ll be glad you did.)

Hamas’ Iranian-trained fighters are no match for the IDF. That’s why they want to lure the IDF into the thicket of the inner city, where they think they have all the advantage. They do have some advantages, but not all.

Cohen has no hesitations in regards to the significant force used, the outcomes of which are seen on the ruined Palestinian homes on the sides of the roads.

“We saw house bombs here, houses booby-trapped from the inside or houses where the gas pipe was left open and all openings were sealed so that they blow up on us as we enter,” he explains. “Those who booby-trap houses should not be surprised when we detonate them from afar in order to protect our soldiers’ lives.”

As he stands on the balcony of a house, Cohen points south. “We saw them launching rockets and mortar shells from inside. When we entered the school itself, we found a weapons storeroom there. We let the civilians leave and made sure that no one hurts them.”

And Hamas is calling children to protect them from the IDF. The brave, brave mujahadeen of Hamas need children to protect them.

Despicable.

Hamas: On the run, not on the ropes

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel — Tags: , , — Meryl Yourish @ 10:48 am

Hamas is hurting, but far from down yet.

Hamas is damaged, but reluctant to concede to a ceasefire, intelligence leaders reported Sunday. The IDF’s head of intelligence and Shin Bet chief said the terror organization’s capabilities have been significantly reduced, but the organization may still launch a harsh response.

“Hamas is crying stop. They are dying to respond to the blow they received and recover from their lack of operative successes in the field. On the other hand, they don’t want to wave the white flag,” Major-General Amos Yadlin said in a press conference.

The brave mujahadeen who taunted the IDF much prefer hitting from afar.

“They didn’t expect our response (to rocket fire) or a ground invasion. The reduction in rocket fire derives from a reduction in ammunition. The ground offensive decreased Hamas capabilities. Their operatives evade friction with our forces and prefer remote controlled operations from a distance,” he explained.

They’re using civilians as cannon fodder, and stealing from humanitarian relief supplies—something the mainstream media always seems to miss.

Yadlin also demonstrated, using a number of intelligence videos, that Hamas continued to use civilians and civilian infrastructure as a shield. For example, intelligence photographs showed a booby-trapped school, with explosives in every classroom.

In a similar indictment of Hamas’ egregious treatment of Gaza civilians, Cabinet Secretary Oved Yehezkel made mention of Hamas’ looting of humanitarian trucks, saying that the aid was being stored in Hamas warehouses and distributed selectively only to Hamas members.

The civilians of Gaza may finally have had enough of Hamas.

Shin Bet Chief Yuval Diskin noted both of these phenomena. But, he said, Gaza citizens may have begun to protest. “There is clear evidence of Gaza residents refusing to have rocket launchers placed next to their homes.

This, as well as the deliberate execution of Fatah operatives under the cover of fire, suggests that Gaza residents are beginning to rethink their leadership. “Hamas is the target of criticism that they caused a tragedy in Gaza,” he said.

We’ll see.

Hamas: Now we’ll never negotiate with Israel. Israel: Awesome!

If anyone is keeping track of the number of lies coming out of Khaled Mashaal, add another few to the list.

The Gaza war has killed the last chance for settlement and negotiations with Israel, Damascus-based Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal told Al-Jazeera on Saturday.

[...] Mashaal’s comments came as Hamas teams were in Cairo to negotiate over an Egyptian-proposed ceasefire to end Israeli strikes on the organization.

Mashaal also called for an end to Israeli attacks, the removal of its forces from the Gaza Strip, and a lifting of the Gaza blockage.

Someone needs to notify this moron that his organization is losing, and that losers don’t get to make the terms.

He also seems to have destroyed the hopes and fears and all the tears of the international community:

Hamas’ Politburo Chief, Khaled Mashaal, slammed the door on all Gaza ceasefire proposals Saturday, saying his organization would treat any international peacekeeping force in Gaza as an occupying entity.

Let’s see if we can recap for our new readers out there (hi, Harry the Hater! Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.):

  1. Hamas has said about a million times that they will never, ever recognize Israel
  2. Hamas rejects the ceasefire as proposed by the UN
  3. Hamas rejects any ceasefire that does not “respect” their “right” to “resistance” (sorry for three scare quotes in one line, but, well, they all need them)
  4. Hamas rejects any external peacekeeping force
  5. Hamas rejects giving the Philadelphi corridor duties to the Palestinian Authority and, finally
  6. Hamas refuses to stop firing rockets, smuggling weapons, and trying to destroy the State of Israel.

Please, please, no matter what, Khaled old boy—never change. Because even the stupidest moron currently protesting Israel’s Gaza operation is going to eventually get the notion that gee, maybe Hamas doesn’t really want peace.

Note to my stupider readers: No, they don’t. Hamas wants the destruction of Israel. And then they want to set up an Islamic caliphate where Israel used to be. Just read their charter. It’s all there.

Taking the fight to Hamas: It’s working

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel — Tags: , , — Meryl Yourish @ 4:43 pm

Israel scored another major hit today. The IDF isn’t just cutting off the creature’s tentacles—it’s also cutting off some heads.

Senior terror commander killed: The IDF killed Amir Mansi, who was the commander of Hamas rocket cells operating in the Gaza City area.

The army said Mansi played a major role in Grad rocket attacks on Israeli communities

Mansi was killed in an aerial assault while attempting to fire mortar shells at IDF ground forces. Two other Hamas members were hurt in the strike; their condition is unknown at this time.

Hamas is getting what they wanted. They asked the IDF to come into Gaza. They asked the soldiers to fight on their turf. The IDF is on their turf. And the IDF is taking out terrorist after terrorist. Yes, Hamas is claiming an army of 15,000 fighters. But only a fraction of that army has what it takes to plan and execute the attacks against Israel. Cut off an animal’s leg, and it can still do a lot of damage. Cut off its head, and it’s dead.

Hamas is dying.

The IDF commander said the fact that Mansi was personally involved in attacking Israeli troops showed that the Hamas military wing was in a serious state of distress, as senior Hamas operatives would not ordinarily venture out into battlefields.

The IDF officer also said that entire companies of Hamas had been completely wiped out, and some Hamas fighters had gone AWOL or fled battlefields.

“They are afraid to come out and fight, that’s why Mansi went out to fire rockets on his own,” the officer said.

Meantime, PIJ is displaying Israeli garbage as spoils of war.

A statement published by Islamic Jihad’s military wing said group members were able to seize a LAW rocket, two-way radios, medicine, and clothes. Photos published by the group also feature empty packages of Israeli hotdogs left behind by IDF troops.

Okay, the radios and the rocket I understand. But hot dog wrappers? Geez.

Israel must be winning, because Hezbullah just came out with another “Don’t you dare step over this line” statement to the IDF.

Uh-huh. Between that, and the 70,000 Iranian suicide bombers, Israel better watch out. Because it’s not like they’re waging a successful war against Hamas or anything.

Oh. Wait.

W. abandons Israel again

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israeli Double Standard Time, United Nations — Tags: , , , — Meryl Yourish @ 9:56 pm

First he forced Ariel Sharon to give up the Philadelphi Corridor. Then he forced Israel to allow Hamas to run in Palestinian elections, even though Ba’athists were not allowed to run in Iraq, and Taliban were not allowed to run in Afghanistan.

Now W. is allowing the UN Security Council to try to force Israel into a cease fire.

Western and Arab foreign ministers on Thursday agreed on a compromise draft resolution calling for an immediate Gaza ceasefire and decided to put it to a UN Security Council vote, a Palestinian diplomat said.

[...] In a key concession to the Arabs, a text circulated by the British delegation earlier Thursday “calls for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire” in Gaza and “for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.”

An earlier version merely “stressed the need” for an immediate ceasefire.

The latest British draft available also “condemns all acts of hostilities and terror directed against civilians” and for “the lifting of the Israeli blockade” of Gaza.

Say, Stephen Walt: I thought the Israel lobby was too strong for something like this to happen.

I can only pray that Israel pays as much attention to Resolution 1860 as Hezbullah has paid to 1701.

Hamas targets schools, world is blind, deaf, and dumb on topic

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israeli Double Standard Time — Tags: , — Meryl Yourish @ 9:00 am

First, I researched the grad rocket. It is accurate. It can be targeted.

Then, I checked on Google maps to see how easy it is to map out a school in Israel. Satellite view. No problem.

Then I checked reports of how many kindergartens and schools have been hit by grad rockets.

One.

Earlier Thursday, a Grad rocket hit a school in Ashkelon. The rocket exploded at the school’s gym, which stood empty at the time of the attack. The building sustained damages but no one was injured.

Two.

Rocket fire continues: A Grad rocket hit an empty kindergarten in the port city of Ashdod on Monday afternoon. An air raid siren sounded in Ashdod and Ashkelon at around 3:20 pm. Several people suffered shock, but there were no injuries. The place was heavily damaged.

Three.

Beersheba joined the list of rocket-stricken communities Tuesday evening as an air raid siren sounded across the southern city, followed by several explosions. A Grad missile landed in an empty kindergarten in the city, causing damage. Thirty-four people were treated for shock at the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba.

Four. (March 2008)

Another rocket landed near a kindergarten in the city, where dozens of children were beginning their day.

As the nursery teachers wiped their tears, they told Ynet that the Color Red alert system was not heard in the kindergarten

Five. (February 2008)

On Thursday a total of 10 rockets hit the beachside city of Ashkelon leaving growing anxiety in their wake. Two long-range Grad rockets fired from the northern Strip hit the city that was previously considered out-of-range of the rockets. One of the rockets landed near a school in the center of town. A 17-year-old girl suffered light shrapnel wounds in the latest attack and several other people suffered from anxiety.

I’m sure there are more. That’s a cursory first check.

Hamas deliberately targets Israeli schools. Palestinian terrorists deliberately time their attacks for when children are walking to or from school. There has never been an outcry from any organization that normal protests human rights violations. There have been no accusations of war crimes by Hamas. There has been, in fact, utter silence from the usual suspects. Israel schools are being targeted, and yet, that gets shrugged off by everyone but Israelis.

Compare that to the world outcry of the UN school in Jabalya that got hit after terrorists used it as cover to fire mortars at IDF troops.

No, the world ignores Palestinian war crimes on a regular basis, and denies that they occur, or excuses them as the result of “occupation.” Or in revenge for Israel bombing Palestinian smuggling tunnels.

What time is it, kiddies? That’s right. It’s Israeli Double Standard Time, which only occurs on days that end with a “y.”

Israel ceases fire, Hamas bombs cities

Filed under: Gaza, Israel, Terrorism — Tags: , — Meryl Yourish @ 11:30 am

But of course.

Just 25 minutes after the “humanitarian pause” declared by the IDF came to an end Wednesday afternoon, Hamas fired two Grad rockets towards southern Israel. One landed inside Beersheba; no injuries or damage have been reported.

The rocket landed on a lawn in the city, narrowly missing a building. “We were at a pub. We ran to the shelter, which was pretty far away, and by the time we reached it we heard (the rocket) fall,” Daniel, a resident of Beersheba, told Ynet.

“The floor shook. We went out and saw that it landed near here… Just a few meters to the side and we would have had a disaste herer.”

I will anxiously await the UN and EU condemnation of Hamas.

Well, no, not really. But it was fun to write that.

UN sticks up for Hamas

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel, United Nations — Tags: , , — Meryl Yourish @ 10:30 am

Of course the UN is sure there weren’t any Hamas terrorists shooting mortars from their school. It’s not like UNRWA has been infiltrated by terrorists, ever. Or use UNRWA ambulances as getaway cars, or to transport weapons.

And it’s not like the UN ever lies about Hamas.

U.N. officials are “99.9 percent certain” there were no Palestinian militants in or on the grounds of a school that was shelled by Israeli forces, killing more than 40 people, a spokesman said Wednesday.

Chris Gunness, a spokesman for the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, disputed Israel’s account of the bombardment of the northern Gaza school. But he said that if anyone could clear up the remaining uncertainty, “We would like them to come forward and be part of an impartial investigation.”

Chris Gunness apparently did not read the AP or New York Times reports, where Palestinian witnesses confirm that Hamas terrorists were firing at Israeli troops. Of course the Times buries the information far down in the article as well, but at least it’s there.

A young witness from Jabaliya, Ibrahim Amen, 16, said that he had seen one of the militants, whom he identified as Abu Khaled Abu Asker, in the area of the school right before the attack.

Ibrahim said he saw the militant after he answered calls for volunteers to pile sand around the camp “to help protect the resistance fighters.” Ibrahim went to pile sand near the school with his brother, Iyad, 20, who was then injured by the Israeli mortar fire.

Of course, Gunness could be right if you take him literally—the terrorists may not have been physically in the school grounds, but firing from just outside it. And that’s apparently enough for the UN to say there were no terrorists firing mortars at Israeli forces. It fits completely within the UN narrative, which has been anti-Israel since shortly after the creation of the Jewish State.

AP confirms Hamas terrorists fired from UN school

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel, Media Bias — Tags: , , — Meryl Yourish @ 7:00 am

The AP buried the information after the fifth paragraph, where it would not get picked up by tomorrow’s World News sections in your local newspaper, but they have independent confirmation that Hamas terrorists were firing from the UN school that got hit by Israeli tank fire yesterday.

Israel’s military said its shelling at the school – the deadliest single episode since Israeli ground forces invaded Gaza on Saturday after a week of air bombardment – was a response to mortar fire from within the school and said Hamas militants were using civilians as cover.

Two residents of the area who spoke with The Associated Press by telephone said they saw a small group of militants firing mortar rounds from a street near the school, where 350 people had gathered to get away from the shelling. They spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal.

And then, buried waaay down in the article, is this information. The AP obviously felt this wasn’t important, what with it actually being information that proves Israel didn’t fire at civilians indiscriminately.

An Israeli military statement said it received intelligence that the dead at the girls school included Hamas operatives, among them members of a rocket-launching squad. It identified two of them as Imad Abu Askar and Hassan Abu Askar.

Two residents who spoke to an AP reporter by phone said the two brothers were known to be low-level Hamas militants. They said a group of militants – one of them said four – were firing mortar shells from near the school.

An Israeli shell targeted the men, but missed and they fled, the witnesses said. Then another three shells landed nearby, exploding among civilians, they said, refusing to allow their names to be published because they feared for their safety.

But of course they bury this information. Because it proves that Hamas is committing war crimes—and that just doesn’t fit the anti-Israel narrative.

Of course, you won’t find this on CNN. That is, you have no independent confirmation. Just a story that manages to make you think that the IDF is lying when it says they were targeting terrorists.

And the anti-Israel narrative continues.

World trying to push Israel into an early cease fire

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel — Tags: , — Meryl Yourish @ 12:00 am

Once again, the world wants Israel to stop before the job is done.

Egypt said on Tuesday it was proposing an immediate ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians in Gaza, to be followed by talks on long-term arrangements including an end to the blockade of Gaza.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak presented the proposal in a brief statement after talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

[...] Sarkozy then told Prime Minister Ehud Olmert: “You have to say that in these conditions you are ready to accept a ceasefire, which means a withdrawal from Gaza, and you have to do it now”, added the official, who asked not to be named.

“Olmert told Sarkozy: ‘If Mubarak does that then I will immediately announce a ceasefire and a withdrawal in principle, but I want to open talks with Egypt on the Philadelphi Route (along the border between Egypt and Gaza)’,” the official said.

So, Hamas gets to keep the rockets and weapons it stockpiled over the last three years since Israel gave up the Philadelphi corridor, and Israel gets—what, exactly?

The Egyptian initiative did meet Hamas’s main condition for a ceasefire – that Israel and Egypt should end the blockade they have imposed on Gaza since Hamas took control of the impoverished coastal strip in June 2007.

Ah. Israel gets to lose. Hamas gets to win. Yeah, that’s a perfect cease fire. And it appears that the Bush Administration is already behind it.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday gave US backing to a proposal by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

“We need urgently to conclude a ceasefire that can endure and that can bring real security,” Rice told the UN Security Council. “In this regard we are pleased by and wish to commend the statement of the president of Egypt and to follow up on that initiative,” she added.

Here’s where we see if Olmert really meant what he said.

“We will hold our fire under two conditions: One is an end to the arms smuggling from Sinai into Gaza, and the other is the cessation of all terror activity; not just the rocket fire,” Olmert declared.

And then there’s Tzipi Livni, who will look like an utter fool after, well, uttering this:

Livni stressed that “a necessary war on terror does not end with an agreement. We don’t sign agreements with terror; we fight terror.”

If we sign an agreement with terror we will not longer be able to advance a peace deal, she said.

That’s because signing an agreement with Hamas is advancing the cause of terror. Now. Will Israel deal?

What an utter disaster that would be.

Meantime, the Israeli public is standing behind the operation. Reservists are anxious to help stop the rockets raining down on Israel.

One reservist showed up a week after his wife gave birth to their firstborn son. Another is scheduled to get married next week and his friend took with him an orange flag which he hopes to be able to raise on the ruins of the Gush Katif settlement bloc.

On Monday, tens of thousands of reservists were at the Tze’elim training base in the Negev training ahead of possible deployment in the Gaza Strip.

“Everybody showed up for duty,” said Maj. Ido, deputy commander of a battalion in the Negev Brigade which is designated to be one of the first reservist units to be sent into Gaza if the IDF decides to send reservists into the Strip. “There are concerns, but it’s only natural and despite the concerns, everyone answered the emergency orders.”

Israelis know what’s at stake here. Will their politicians fail them again?

If there is an early cease fire, expect Bibi Netanyahu to win in a landslide.

Hamas using children as human shield

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel, Terrorism — Tags: , — Meryl Yourish @ 5:01 pm

Take a look at this video.

Now take a look at this one, which shows terrorists shooting mortars from a UN school in Gaza.

The terrorists were shooting from the school that got hit today. It’s terrible that civilians were hit, yes. But Hamas is the organization that is committing the war crimes. Hiding in civilian areas using civilians (and children no less!) as human shields, and firing from schools, are all war crimes.

Unfortunately, this is exactly what Hamas wanted to happen. They’re running from the Hezbullah playbook. Here’s hoping that the next mass casualty report we hear about is all terrorists.

Barbarism in the Congo, ignored

Filed under: Gaza, Israel, Media Bias — Tags: , , — Meryl Yourish @ 12:00 pm

Why are unintentional Palestinian civilian deaths so much more important than actual massacres that took place in Africa?

Attackers wielding machetes hacked to death dozens of people at a church in remote eastern Congo, witnesses said Monday, and the Ugandan army accused the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels of the massacre.

A European aid worker said more than 100 people are reported to have been killed in the attack the day after Christmas and that the Congolese military put the number dead at 120 to 150.

Why the obsession with the Palestinian death toll, and the utter disregard for the death toll of the deliberate massacre of Africans in the Congo?

Three African nations are deploying troops to remote eastern Congo after reports that Ugandan rebels killed more than 400 people in a series of massacres since Christmas, officials said Wednesday.

A Catholic charity, Caritas, cited reports by its staff in the region that the Ugandan rebel Lord’s Resistance Army has killed hundreds of people since Dec. 25. The rebels and the Ugandan government have accused each other of being behind recent attacks in the remote area of Congo, where the rebels have bases.

Why ignore the brutality in the Congo and concentrate only on the deaths of children in Gaza?

The rebel group has waged one of Africa’s longest and most brutal wars for the last two decades. In the past, aid and rights groups have accused the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels of cutting off the lips of civilians and forcing thousands of children to serve as soldiers or sex slaves. The conflict has spilled out of northern Uganda and into Sudan and Congo.

Why is the Israeli-Palestinian conflict weighted so much more than the many conflicts in Africa that has caused the deaths of millions civilians?

Jack’s friend has the answer.

The objective media—not

Once again, CNN shows its bias.

Death toll rises as Israel encircles Gaza City

That’s two headlines in a row that start with “Death toll rises.”

If you’re coming here from the CNN link, take a look around to get the other side of the story. Israel is fighting a group of terrorists who have been sending rockets and missiles into Israel civilians for years. Prior to 2005, the pretext was to drive Israel out of Gaza. Now that Israel is out of Gaza, what’s the pretext? Oh, that’s right. Hamas wants to get rid of the “settlers” in Israeli cities.

You may also want to read this before posting a comment. I’m not interested in reading here the same kind of boring, repetitive anti-Israel drek that I can read everywhere else. No, not all criticism of Israel is anti-Semitism. But most of it is.

Update: Terrorists were firing from the school. I don’t expect the anti-Israel crowd to read that link. But if you want to read a different side of the story, click it.

Czech FM to Israel: We’re telling you to lose

Filed under: Israeli Double Standard Time, World — Tags: , , — Meryl Yourish @ 10:30 am

Tzipi Livni gave a great press conference. Read the whole thing, and I think you’ll agree. Then, buried at the end of the article (where it belongs), is this pearl of wisdom from the Czech foreign minister:

The Czech foreign minister, whose country serves as the current EU president, said that a ceasefire must be implemented as soon as possible and must include an end to the rocket fire directed at Israel.

He added that a ceasefire must be declared before all military targets are achieved.

How do you say “Eff off” in Hebrew?

What nerve. What absolutely disregard for the safety of Israel. Declare a ceasefire before you eliminate the threat?

Asshat.

This is the guy that says he understands Israel is acting in self-defense? Looks like the Euroweenies got to him.

Firming up the narrative: Israel can’t win

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel, Media Bias — Tags: , — Meryl Yourish @ 8:00 am

The news media are falling all over themselves to conclude that no matter what happens, Israel loses. When I woke up to NPR this morning, the first thing I heard was (paraphrasing) “Israeli forces haven’t stopped the rocket fire into southern Israel, with more than 20 rockets being fired today.”

CNN’s summary of their latest Israel piece:

NEW: Hamas rocket fire into southern Israel persists despite 10-day campaign

And the headline tells you the focus of the media:

Gaza death toll rises as Israel pounds Hamas

You see? No matter what Israel does, she loses. Might as well not even bother fighting. Hamas can’t be beaten.

What a load of crap. Of course Hamas can be beaten. Israel had the terrorists on the rope before, but then they granted them a truce. Every time Hamas is seriously wounded, it sues for truce. And Israel grants it. Why? Several reasons: Israel would rather not send her sons into battle to be hurt and killed if she can accomplish the same result through negotiations. (Of course, it doesn’t really work like that with terrorist groups. If you don’t kill them, they keep coming back at you. They’re like horror movie monsters.) And because Israel hopes against hope that the terrorists are people, too, and that all they really want is peace. They may be people, but they don’t want peace. Hamas has proven that, over and over again.

But the IDF can win this war. Hamas’ biggest boast: They will kill and kidnap Israel soldiers. But when boast became reality, here’s what happened:

A Golani soldier managed to single-handedly foil an attempt to kidnap him during nocturnal operations in the Gaza Strip overnight Sunday, Israel Radio reported.

[...] Upon entering the house, the soldiers discovered entrances to several tunnels, which the Hamas terrorists holed up in the house had used to escape underground to neighboring houses. According to the report, the terrorists were shooting into the building when the soldiers entered.

One of the soldiers reportedly followed the gunmen into a tunnel and managed to contain several Hamas fighters in an underground firefight, before teaming up with his comrades again. Two IAF helicopters were scrambled to support the infantrymen, Israel Radio said.

The military assessed that the Palestinian terrorists were trying to lure the soldier to go after them alone into the tunnel in an effort to kidnap him.

The IDF is poised to go deep into Gaza City tomorrow, Israel time. It’s going to get worse before it gets better. But I don’t see how it can get any worse in the media.

Number of killed and wounded in Israel doubled under cease fire

Six months of cease fire did nothing. No, wait. Apparently, it encouraged more attacks.

Shootings, stabbings, rocket and missile fire, and a bulldozer attack by Palestinian and Arab terrorists killed 36 Israelis and tourists in Israel in 2008, compared to 12 in 2007 and 29 in 2006, according to a report by Hatzalah Judea and Samaria released over the weekend.

The organization, which provides rapid response first aid in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza border area, also reported a sharp rise in the number of injuries by Kassam rockets, Grads and mortar fire compared to the past two years.

These attacks on Jewish settlements within firing range of Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, wounded 947 in 2008. A total of 464 were wounded in 2007 and 227 in 2006.

A total of 1,683 Kassam rockets fell in Israel near Gaza and another 108 shot from Gaza fell back into Palestinian areas.

In Israel, eight people were killed in 2008 by rocket attacks, 19 were killed in shootings, one person was stabbed to death, one was killed in a suicide bombing, one in a bulldozer attack, and an additional eight soldiers were killed in battle.

There’s a statistic you’ll never see on the mainstream media sites.

When Israel shows weakness, she is attacked. Let’s see how the Gaza war plays out. If all goes well, there will be a dramatic drop in terror attacks on Israelis. There will certainly be a dramatic drop in rocket attacks from Hamas.

Israeli morale isn’t shaken at all. Listen to the words of one of the soldiers just back from Gaza:

In a smoking area outside the hospital, a Golani private, visibly shaken, said he was a member of the platoon whose men were hit by the mortar shell and that in the aftermath, his mother had revoked her permission for him to go into combat. He was an only son and army protocol required a parent’s signature. His mother, he explained, had had a change of heart.

“But I’m dying to go back in there,” the private said, sucking down the cigarette he had just lit with shaky hands. “I’m not going to tell you that it wasn’t frightening. We went in, it was all quiet, and then boom, the mortar hit and Hamas fighters started coming out. We repelled them, but it was a real balagan.”

French police bar pro-Israeli protesters from Israeli embassy

Now there’s logic for you. The French police can’t handle “youths” who burn hundreds of cars in the Parisian suburbs nightly, but they decided that a pro-Israel rally can’t be held in front of the Israeli embassy.

Several thousand demonstrators waved Israeli flags and sang Hebrew hymns in Paris Sunday to show support for Israel in its military offensive in Gaza, a day after a huge pro-Palestinian rally.

Warmly dressed to brave seasonably cold weather, about 12,000 demonstrators gathered on a street not far from the Israeli embassy, according to organizers, the CRIF, an umbrella group of French Jewish organizations.

Police said 4,000 people turned up for the demonstration held on a side street after city authorities barred them from massing directly in front of the embassy.

By the way, the difference between us and them:

Pro-Palestinian protesters Saturday burned Israeli flags, torched several cars and smashed windows of shops along the chic Hausmann Boulevard near the Paris Opera house.

Click the link. Nice pictures of a sea of Israeli flags.

In search of objective reporting

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel, Media Bias — Tags: , , — Meryl Yourish @ 11:00 am

CNN does not disappoint.

The headline: Israeli forces push deeper into Gaza; death toll rises

In the summary: NEW: At least 24 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza Sunday, sources say

The context: None.

The AP: Accepting Palestinian casualty figures blindly while pretending that they’re actually using objective sources and confirmations.

Israeli ground troops and tanks cut swaths through the Gaza Strip early Sunday, cutting the coastal territory into two and surrounding its biggest city as the new phase of a devastating offensive against Hamas militants gained momentum.

The military used overwhelming firepower from tanks, artillery and aircraft to protect the advancing soldiers, and Gaza officials said at least 31 civilians were killed in the onslaught. The military said troops killed several dozen militants, but Gaza officials could confirm only four dead — in part because rescue teams could not reach the battle zones.

Reuters: Oh, please. They’re not even pretending to be objective anymore.

Israeli troops and tanks split the Gaza Strip and ringed its main city on Sunday in an offensive against Hamas militants but civilians trapped in the Palestinian enclave suffered more bloodshed.

Bloomberg News: Finally, a somewhat objective piece.

MSNBC: The headline and subhead say it all.

Israeli forces bisect Gaza, surround biggest city
500 Palestinians killed in just over a week; Hamas rockets slay 4 Israelis

The rest of the story is AP. But the subhead is all MSNBC.

Fox News: What’s that I see? Objectivity? Can.t be. The lead:

Israeli ground troops and tanks cut swaths through the Gaza Strip early Sunday, dividing the coastal territory into three parts in an effort to prevent Hamas militants from accessing weapons.

Israeli defense officials told FOX News that an estimated 30 Hamas militants had been killed in the incursion so far, though precise numbers are difficult to pin down.

Israel’s army also announced that a soldier was killed in the fighting on Sunday — the first Israeli fatality in the ground offensive launched late Saturday

Yes, it can be. Objectivity.

Fox wins.

Update to my readers who are getting here from the CNN article: I’m trying to present the side that you never see—particularly by watching CNN. Try looking around and reading some of the other posts. There are plenty of contrasts to the stories you’ve been getting. And they’re all true. I post nothing that I can’t back up with facts.

Countering Hamas propaganda

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel — Tags: , — Meryl Yourish @ 10:10 am

Bookmark this post, people, and use it when you are defending Israel’s actions in Gaza.

The Hamas police officers were just police officers: No, they weren’t. They were members of the Hamas military wing.

Rashid Thabet, who writes regularly for a website identified with Hamas, has praised the policemen killed in Gaza, stating that they were no mere regular cops who flunked out of school and were recruited to oppress the residents on behalf of a tyrannical regime, but policemen who were the elite of Palestinian soceity.

He said that nearly all of them were ‘Izz Al-Din Al-Qassam members, who by day carried out security missions and by night engaged in jihad and attacks.

Palestinian rockets are “crude, homemade rockets” that almost never kill:
Aside from the fact that no other nation in the world is expected to accept the daily bombardment of its citizens, there are these facts (French link):

Hundreds of Hamas members were sent for training in Damascus and Tehran to learn to launch Katyusha and Grad 2 rockets, a former head of security in the Palestinian Authority in Gaza told Le Figaro.

The Gaza operation will unify Palestinians against Israel: Hamas is far too busy executing Fatah members to think about Palestinian solidarity. But I think not.

Fatah officials in Ramallah told The Jerusalem Post that Hamas militiamen had been assaulting many Fatah activists since the beginning of the operation last Saturday. They said at least 75 activists were shot in the legs while others had their hands broken.

Wisam Abu Jalhoum, a Fatah activist from the Jabalya refugee camp, was shot in the legs by Hamas militiamen for allegedly expressing joy over the IDF air strikes on Hamas targets.

The Palestinians voted for Hamas because they wanted a less corrupt government, not more terrorism: Really? I don’t think that’s going to happen..

Back then, Hamas ran in the parliamentary election under the banner of Change and Reform. Its leaders promised the Palestinians good government and an end to financial corruption. But Hamas also promised the Palestinians that it would “pursue the resistance against the Israeli enemy.” It also pledged never to recognize Israel’s right to exist in this part of the world.

To its credit, Hamas did not hide its agenda. Its leaders were very clear in the messages they sent to the Palestinian public and the international community. Hamas’s message was the same in Arabic and English.

When Hamas talked about pursuing the “resistance” against Israel, it was referring to the firing of rockets and the launching of suicide bombings.

Hamas will moderate, and can be negotiated with: No, Hamas will never moderate.

Hamas is dead set against a two-state solution, whether it joins a unity government or remains in the opposition. Indeed, Hamas deploys suicide bombers specifically aimed at derailing progress toward peace. Engaging Hamas will not help the peace process, but it will legitimize the group most violently opposed to such progress.

Muslim and Arab states will rise up as one against Israel:
They haven’t even managed to agree on a special meeting of the OIC.

A senior aide to President Ahmadinejad says only eight Islamic states had voiced their readiness to attend an emergency meeting on Gaza.

Arab nations know that Iran’s hand is behind Hamas. They fear Iranian hegemony in the Middle East.

The myth of disproportionate response: I could go into all the technicalities of international law here, but as I’m not a lawyer, I’ll simply pass along Alex Bensky’s comment on that:

I have discerned that the people claiming Israel is making a disproportionate response aren’t liars or hypocrites, they have just given “disproportionate” a new meaning–it’s now synonymous with “effective.” They don’t mind Israel doing something, just as long as it’s quiet and useless.

Told you: Bush stops anti-Israel resolution

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel, United Nations — Tags: , , — Meryl Yourish @ 9:16 am

Told you so.

The United States thwarted an effort by Libya on Sunday to persuade the UN Security Council to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza after Israel launched a ground invasion, diplomats said.

Several council diplomats told reporters that the U.S. refusal to back a Libyan-drafted demand for an immediate truce at a closed-door emergency session had killed the initiative, since council statements must be passed unanimously.

He owes Israel, and he knows it.

Then there’s the matter of Bush knowing the difference between terrorist attacks and defending yourself from terrorist attacks. Too bad he let State bash that perspective out of him where Israel was concerned.

W.’s parting gift to Israel

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel — Tags: , — Meryl Yourish @ 5:30 am

I’m quite sure President Bush is feeling guilty that he allowed State to pressure Ariel Sharon into giving up the Philadelphi corridor, which allowed Hamas to import thousands of tons of weapons and arms, and which greatly contributed to the current constant attacks on Israel.

So I think his parting gift to Israel will be to continuously block UN resolutions against Israel until this war is done.

He blocked a one-sided statement from coming out.

The United States late Saturday blocked approval of a Security Council statement calling for an immediate Israeli-Hamas cease-fire in Gaza and southern Israel and expressing serious concern at the escalation of violence.

US deputy ambassador Alejandro Wolff said the United States saw no prospect of Hamas abiding by last week’s council call for an immediate end to the violence. Therefore, he said, a new statement at this time “would not be adhered to and would have no underpinning for success; would not do credit to the council.”

Good.

Bush has nothing to lose. He’s outta here on January 20th.

As for all those idiots wondering why Obama doesn’t act, or say anything: We have a president. It’s George W. Bush until January 20th, after Obama is sworn in. Deal with it, crybabies.

One more Gaza update for the evening

Filed under: Gaza, Hamas, Israel — Tags: , — Meryl Yourish @ 10:04 pm

Dawn is a couple of hours away in Israel. I’m going to let the Israeli bloggers take it away.

Spanish FM sides with Palestinians: Shocked, shocked I am. Go click on this link to see how shocked I really am. Three years ago, the world told Israel to suck up the rocket fire. Three effing years ago.

Israeli film critical of Israel wins critics award: There’s a shocker.

Ban Ki-Moon finds a spine:
Of course, it’s only where Israel is concerned. Still waiting to hear him tell Hamas to stop firing rockets before Israel responds to the rocket fire.

According to Ban’s spokesman, the UN chief “reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of all violence, and urged regional and international partners to exert all possible influence to bring about an immediate end to the bloodshed and suffering.”

What’s diplo-speak for “Eff no”?

Keen Grasp of the Obvious Winner of the Day:
C’mon, JPost headline writers. Don’t make me come over there.

Palestinians were throwing explosive devices at IDF soldiers operating in the Jebaliya refugee camp late Saturday night, Israel Radio reported.

Clashes ensued between troops and Hamas terrorists after the military embarked on a ground operation in the evening.

Anyone out there that thought they wouldn’t do this? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Oooh! Donny and Marie, live on Larry King!
Really folks, don’t miss it! (Must switch to other station during commercials.)

Alan Dershowitz looks like a puppet. Really. Right out of Team America. (James Zogby looks like a dick. Whoops, did I type that out loud?)

Hamas slaughtering Fatah in Gaza: It’s a repeat of 2007.

JPost says Hezbullah will step in:
Iran has supposedly told its proxy that if Israel goes in on the ground, Hezbullah comes in in the air. Tomorrow will tell. Omri is convinced that Hezbullah believes the IDF when Israel said it would flatten Beirut if Hezbullah launched more missiles. Not Hezbullah-controlled Beirut. ALL of it.

James Zogby, effing liar: Just told Wolf Blitzer Gaza is the most densely populated place on earth. Lie. But then, the Palestinian side lies, lies, lies, and then lies again.

I think that’s enough for the night. Over to you, Israelis and Californians.
