I find myself agreeing more and more with those who say we should end foreign military aid. Perhaps Israel and the U.S. should just continue to help each other militarily. Because dropping aid to Israel’s enemies would be worth it.

Free the terrorist! The newly-elected so-called moderate Islamist leader of Egypt, who just ensured himself the power of a dictator, wants the U.S. to free the blind sheik. Remember him? Omar Abdel-Rahman? He’s the one who planned the 1993 World Trade Center bombing that resulted in American deaths. He’s also the one who used his despicable lawyer to pass messages to his followers to perform terrorist acts. So sure, listen to Morsi about how much more humane it would be if Abdel-Rahman would be allowed visits by friends and family. Because it’s not like he used people before to bring messages of terror out of prison.

At the end of November, Politico published an article about how progressive journalists, now that Obama was safely elected, were beginning to consider criticizing the president a bit more. “He was the champion of our side, he vanquished the foe,” New Yorker political columnist Hendrik Hertzberg said. “[But] now liberals don’t have to worry about hurting his chances for re-election, so they can be tougher in urging him to do what he should be doing.”
We have been going to a series of history lectures on Israel between 1949 – 1952. One interesting point is that much of information that the US was able to get that enabled the CIA to get started was via Israel. Israel also has field tested a lot of American weaponry which has been of great value to the United States.
I believe that you’re right about foreign aid. My father went to a talk by Patrick Clawson (I think in the late 90’s) and then Clawson recommended cutting aid to Israel. Clawson isn’t anti-Israel, but at that point, Israel’s economy had grown to the point where it was no longer significant.
(It could be argued that when $3 billion was significant for Israel in the early ’80’s, Israel mismanaged its economy because of American largesse.)
Remember too that the Blind Sheikh was the rallying cause of the protesters at the American embassy in Cairo, not the anti-Islamic movie. Freeing Rahman would be a victory for the anti-American protesters who attacked American diplomatic missions this past September 11.
It is a mistake to treat terrorism in pursuit of the jihadists’ war on Western Civilizatiion as a law enforcement problem, and not outright war by unlawful combatants. Jihad is a war, not a crime, and the terrorists are waging it in a criminal fashion. For that, the international law of armed conflict, not municipal law (the laws of individual countries) is the appropriate legal system.
I guess Jews will know once and for all if Obama is their freind if he frees Rahman but keeps Pollard in jail.
