The Miss America President wins the Miss America Peace Prize

I’ve decided that we have the Miss America President. He looks pretty, he speaks nicely on deep subjects (but not too deeply), and he has to pull out a bit of talent for the competition now and then, but ultimately, he’s just another smiling face trying to win the prize. And now he has. Barack Obama gave a speech, and the Nobel committee gave him first place.

The Nobel Committee announced Friday that the annual peace prize was awarded to Barack Obama, just nine months into his presidency, “for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

The award cited in particular Mr. Obama’s effort to reduce the world’s nuclear arsenal. “He has created a new international climate,” the committee said.

In other words, Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize for giving a speech.

Granted, the prize itself has become less and less meaningful as the years go on (cf: Giving Jimmy Carter a Nobel to taunt George W. Bush), but I think we can safely say now that the award is utterly devoid of meaning. It was given to a man who has done nothing, in the hopes that he will eventually do something.

Life imitates the Onion. Really. I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

And the truly frightening thing is: I’m betting Obama thinks he deserves it.

Update: In honor of the Miss America President winning the prize, comments are once again open.

Update 2: I just opened registration, because I’m lazy and want those of you who emailed me to register yourselves. Quick! Before I close it again. (I’ll hold it for the rest of the day, likely.)

How pissed off is Bill Clinton today? Hilary’s 2012 campaign just got a shot in the arm.

I also thought I was reading the Onion when I saw the headline. In fact, I’m starting to think the Onion might qualify as a legit news source. They certainly could not have come up with anything more outrageous than the following story:

“Saudis ask for aid if the world cuts dependence on oil”

  3. Karmafish says:

Well, I’m still keeping my fingers crossed for Barack, but this is total bullshit. He has done zipadee-dooda to deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. He has accomplished zero with the Iranians and all he has managed to do on the I-P front is alienate the hell out of the Israelis with that truly stupid demand for a total settlement freeze, while giving Abbas all the excuse that he needs to avoid the negotiating table.

He should be embarrassed to accept this award.

  4. Majik says:

The Nobel committee has continued down the path of irrelevancy. The committee has made some fairly bad choices for the last decade or so, its anti-America agenda fits in perfectly with Mr. Obama’s. The following is a list of recent Nobel winners.
    1994 Yasser Arafat (A terrorist)
    2001 Kofi Annan (Anti-American Politician)
2002 Jimmy Carter (Anti American Politician)
2005 Mohamed El Baradei (A fool and a Liar)
2007 Al Gore (A large fool and liar)
    2009 Barrack Obama (Anti-American Politician)

This is a collection of Leftist doofuses, unknown bureaucrats, petty dictators, terrorists, conmen, and crooks. What distinguished company, Mister President “No Clue”. The continuing journey to mental retardation is firmly imbedded in our society; this is not all that different from giving an Oscar to a pedophile.

    Okay-where’s the “register” button?

  6. annoyinglittletwerp says:

    Nevermind.
    I’m a ditz.

  7. Enough Is Enough says:

Algore just commented that Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

    Jack meet Squat.

  8. Sabba Hillel says:

Majil: Actually, the only condition that the president does not share with the other entries on your list is that he is not an avowed terrorist. Every other thing on the list applies to him. Of course, some people are saying that he is running for “election” to the post of UN Secretary General. As a result, he is working to give that post actual power before he leaves office as U.S. President on January 20, 2013 (unless he resigns earlier to take up his new post).

  9. JD says:

Isn’t there a saying that the reward for work well done is more work? Yeah, so, the reward for O’s speeches is…. a platform for another speech. And about now, I am really cringing at the idea of YET ANOTHER speech. Anyone with me?

Oooh, that’s a lot of hands raised.

  10. cliff was from montreal says:

Did ya know that the runner up for the prize was Michelle O ? No reason given…..and with an honorable mention for her’ strong muscular looking arms’
This award is so irrelevant that I would have nominated my gold fish. He was a peaceful sort.

  11. I’m largely indifferent to politics and not an American, but when I heard this, I went, huh? Is there anyone left who actually takes the Nobel committee seriously? Another website called Obama in relation to the prize, the “Miss America President”. Honestly, I’m not really that informed on politics, but what has Obama done to deserve this??? He hasn’t been around long enough to make any sort of mark.

If I were the Pres I would be mortified and try to give it back.

  12. Long_rifle says:

If this doesn’t prove that Dear Leader is just an empty suit I don’t know what will. All he’s done is give speeches, and honor terrorists for not killing Americans recently. Wait… Now we know why he really got the award.

  13. Jody says:

Reminds me of the old Simpsons quote from Sideshow Bob:

“Now attempted murder, honestly! Did they ever give a Nobel Prize for ‘attempted chemistry???'”

The joke suddenly isn’t that ironic anymore :(

  14. Elisson says:

The fact that the Nobel committee saw fit to award Yasir Arafat the Peace Price (admittedly, while he was in full Faux Peacemaker mode) makes this prize completely meaningless. Feh.

  15. annoyinglittletwerp says:

It P.O.’s me to no end that Obummah-and Jimmah, Arafish, and Algore could get the NPP but REAL heroes/heroines like the Good Pope John, JPII, Irena Sendler, etc couldn’t. I’m surprised that honorable winners like Elie Wiesel haven’t given their NPP’s back in protest.

  16. Michael Lonie says:

Obama got the Nobel Peace Prize for not being Dubya and for his travels around the world cringing to our enemies on behalf of America.

The world has become impossible to satirize.

  17. Pamela says:

“If you want to make peace, you don’t talk to your friends. You talk to your enemies.” Moshe Dayan

Only trouble is Barack can’t distinguish who’s what and what constitutes the true definition of Peace.

  18. Tony says:

For the ultra-Left Norwegians (slopping around in all that excess offshore oil) to give the prize before anything’s done to deserve it, indicates their government’s visceral hatred of the USA (they consistently honour those who undermine the US). For Barack Obama to accept this pathetic and worthless bauble shows the man has neither modesty nor shame.

Sure he’s going to give the money to “charity” (ACORN?), but he’ll be reckoning that the addition to his CV will be worth far more than the money that goes with it. After all, when he’s finished being President of the USA he can be UN Secretary General. And then it’s on to the gazillion dollar speaking circuit.

For talking about peace, but making the world a more dangerous place, Obama should receive the Neville Chamberlain award for appeasement.

  19. Pamela says:

Hmm..did the Norwegians ever pay back their WWII debt for the Marshall Plan? I know the Fins did. Sent gold ships every month.
