It's aimed at their fellow academics. The purpose is to show that unlike the morally unwashed Jews, these ones are not connected to the colonialist, apartheid, [insert favorite buzz word here] Israelis. Instead, they are part of the wonderful progressive movement and are on the side of the oppressed Palestinians. For some reason, no doubt just coincidental, when I first read about this I thought of the part in the seder where the wicked son says, "What are these ceremonies to you?" and the seder emphasizes that he says "to you" and not "to us." The declaration isn’t aimed at Israel or Jews generally. It’s aimed at their fellow academics.
