As an American I can say that support here for Israel is very high, but unfortunately too many Americans are uninterested in Foreign Affairs or are simply too uneducated or too obsessed with Television to really care. We have more of a problem with Apathy than anything else. Americans are generally not nearly as prone to antisemitism as Europeans, and we have so many business and cultural links to Israel its not surprising that we are pro-Israel.
Besides, many Americans distrust the Theocratic tendencies of Muslim nations, and are adamantly against extremists and view the militants in Palestine not as freedom fighters, but as terrorists (which they are!) This is generally across party lines, but I think that many Democrats who aren't "supportive" of Israel are just softies who disagree with the use of force. Of course, this is ridiculous, but it doesn't mean that they view Israel as a "threat" as Europeans do.
