After the pet food scare last summer it came out with top marks. My cat - who normally shows zero interest in tuna - goes nuts for it, so it's super-primo bribe material. I've been doing a lot of research lately, into idolatry and its social implications. So far, I've come to the conclusion that, in order to achieve peak function in society, people must not only believe in a god of some sort, but it's also critical that this god not actually exist. If God did exist, worship of Him would generate a cult of personality, rather than a religion, with all the implications thereof. So I'd have to say that worshipping any living thing is, if not technically idolatry, at least not a good idea. Worshipping other people is the most immediately dangerous, while the classic definition of idolarty - worship of inanimate images - results in the greatest short term benefit, but an exponentially more catastrophic failure mode in the long term.
