As long as Gheit and his fellow Arabs look on thugs like Saddam Hussein as great men and martyrs, so long will he and all the other Arabs be stuck with corrupt and incompetent Arab governments, whether by the PA, or Hamas, or any other. The only chance the Arabs have for halfway decent self-government is going to be by joining in the trend now proceeding in Iraq, and maintaining it rather than letting the nihilistic death cultists return them to tyrannies like Saddam's. The jury is still out on that, and will be for some time. If the Arabs blow the chance that the Coalition, especially the US Army and Marine Corps, have given them by the expenditure of blood and treasure, they will never get another chance at liberty and prosperity.

Yes, I saw that Globe and Mail article, too. In all fairness, however, it should be pointed out that that the shopkeeper was not really pro-Israel. [The article mentions that he had posters in his shop hailing Saddam Hussein as a martyr.] He just doesn't want to be ruled by the P.A. as long as it remains corrupt and ineffectual. However, he would prefer to live in an independent Palestine. The article says that he and other Arabs living in Israel prefer to live under a rule of law and social benefits in the meantime, even if they might not like the Israeli government. It's a question of a lesser of evils for the time being.

It should also be pointed out that, although there were indeed figures a few years ago showing a rather high level of patriotism toward Israel among Israeli Arabs, those figures dropped substantially in the wake of last year's Lebanon war.

Here's a link on that subject:

IIRC, Arabs in Port Suez and Port Said demonstrated against the corruption and incompetence of Egyptian authorities with signs saying "The Israelis were better than you."

They always miss us when we're gone.
