What’s wrong with monopolies

Comcast bought out Richmond’s old cable company years ago. Back when it was AT&T, it never went out, the service was great, and it wasn’t that expensive. All that changed, of course, because Comcast sucks great big hairy you-know-what. And it’s a monopoly to boot: What other cable network can I get in my neighborhood?

That’s right. None.

So a few weeks ago, Comcast decided to force all us old-fashioned cable box subscribers to go digital by putting HBO on all-digital, effective June 1st. So what’s happening right after June 1st? The Soprano series finale. They did it in Philly, too.

Apparently, enough outraged Richmond-area Comcast customers called Comcast and threatened to switch to satellite, because now Comcast has backed down and changed the date to June 11th—the day after the series finale.

Mind you, I don’t watch the Sopranos, and don’t care about it at all, but I don’t want to go digital yet, either. I’m pretty happy with the old box. But I have no choice if I want to keep the premium channel.

Whoops, don’t care enough to do it. I can always rent my favorite movies and series.

But I have to say, I hate monopolies. Businesses have proven, every single time, that without competition, they’ll screw the consumer. Every single time. Unless the consumer gets off his ass and complains loudly enough. Great PR move, Comcast!

How the poll is shaking out so far

A substantial number of you are ignoring the poll (be still my heart; I never would have suspected that), but if the remainder are fairly representative of my readers (and that’s a big if, but it’s the only if we have to go by), then here is how things look so far:

A substantial number of my readers are Jewish, as I suspected, but as I also knew, a large minority is Christian. And very few of you are Christian Zionists. Gee. Go figure. The conventional wisdom is wrong about Christian Zionists, too. Who knew? (Okay, we did, but still…)

Results of religion question

What surprised me is the percentage of Conservative Jews who read this blog. Yes, I’m Conservative, but there are fewer of us than there are of the other two denominations.

More Conservative Jews

The overwhelming majority (59%) of my readers consider themselves centrists. That would be because the overwhelming majority of Americans consider themselves centrists. Several of you have asked me to break out the poll into social and political issues. I will do that when I get the chance.

Mostly centrist readers

This one didn’t surprise me at all, which is why I added the second answer for why you read: I have a lot of readers who hate cat posts.

Cat lovers and haters

Sorry, folks, but sometimes, you simply have to post kitty pictures. They’re staying. As for the rest, I’m starting to think you guys really, really don’t want me to change the formula. The answer to what I should change around here:

Don't change a thing

Hm. I think the humor may be heading over to Hot Air for a while, because I’ve always been a visual writer, and I’m finally getting a chance to express some of the things I see in my head. But some will spill over to here, I’m sure.

By the way, if you haven’t taken the poll, please do. I know how many of you read me every day, and so far, the poll-takers are in single-digits of the percentage of people who read. Geez. You could at least bump it up to 10%.

Hey, folks. Look what your friendly neighborhood blogger did in her spare time.

Adam Gadahn’s Meltdown

Yep. I wrote this.

Anyone have Adam’s email address?

Update: Folks, Bryan’s video skills and Robert Spencer’s voice talents were equal parts of the success of this video. Robert was just hilarious. He had the right amount of whiny indignation that I thought while I was writing it.

British conspiracy theories: The Jews pulled off the Entebbe hijacking

TO ANYONE GETTING HERE VIA RAIMONDO’S LINK: READ THIS FOR THE REAL STORY. Raimondo is lying to you. Entebbe happened, just as Wikipedia said it did. Occam’s Razor applies: If it looks like terrorism….

Okay. Get this. The British government has a file that blamed Israel for the Entebbe hijacking.

Yes, really.

In order to make people think badly of the PLO.

Yep. Conspiracy theories abound when it comes to Israel, apparently, even in the British government.

But it isn’t anti-Semitism. It’s anti-Zionism. Please don’t mistake this for any kind of anti-Jew hatred, just because it resembles typical anti-Jewish conspiracy theories.

Wow. I thought the Brits were crazy before this, but now I think they’re effing nuts.

The state of Israel was behind the hijacking of an Air France plane to Entebbe in 1976, and cooperated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in staging the affair, a UK government file compiled at the time of the occurrences and published by the BBC Friday revealed.

According to the file released by the National Archives, an unnamed contact told a British diplomat in Paris that the Shin Bet and the PFLP collaborated to seize the plane, which was hijacked in Athens and flown to Entebbe in Uganda, where 98, most of hem Israelis, were held hostage.

In the document, written on 30 June 1976 when the crisis was still unresolved, DH Colvin of the Paris Embassy wrote that according to his source, “the hijack was the work of the PFLP, with help from the Israeli Secret Service, the Shin Bet.

“The operation was designed to torpedo the PLO’s standing in France and to prevent what they see as a growing rapprochement between the PLO and the Americans.”

He added: “My contact said the PFLP had attracted all sorts of wild elements, some of whom had been planted by the Israelis.”

Okay. I get that there are a lot of things in government files, and some of them seem a little wrongheaded. But to make this wacky conspiracy theory into an official British government file is beyond the pale.

They used the typical anti-Semitic theory conspiracy elements: The wicked, evil Jews are sacrificing their own people to make their enemies look bad. Because it isn’t possible, I suppose, that people who hate the Jews do evil things because, gee, they hate the Jews. Like the PFLP and the PLO.

This is unbelievable. I can’t even make this stuff up. You wouldn’t believe me if I made this stuff up.

You would think I’d get used to this, but I am in utter shock that a British envoy to Paris saw fit to make an official government file out of this bullshit.

Un. Be. Lievable.

Why Hamas wants the truce extended to the West Bank

So they can murder more Israelis. Lots more.

The Shin Bet exposed a plot by Hamas members in the Hebron area to carry out an attack against IDF forces on the trans-Judea highway between Kiryat Gat and Kiryat Arba, it was cleared for publication Thursday.

According to security sources, three Hamas members planted several explosive devices alongside the highway and intended to detonate
one of the bombs in order to draw emergency services and security forces to the scene before detonating the additional bombs. One of the bombs was supposed to be activated by a cell phone.

The terrorists were arrested by IDF soldiers at the beginning of April; dozens of kilograms of explosives were found in their possession, and two of the bombs were uncovered.

Sure! Let’s allow free passage from Gaza to the West Bank, so Hamas can plot more terror like this, and murder more Israelis! Why not? Hey, it will make the world a lot happier, right?

Shyeah.

Someone tell me again how Hamas is moderating, because I’m thinking that they never got the memo.
