I don't like using gmail for anything but my podcast mail because it's the most intrusive email service out there.
Google monitors EVERYTHING you see, EVERYWHERE you go, ALL of the searches you do--screw them. It's none of their business what I do.
I think I'm going to stop using their search engine. Between that, and Amazon riding me for every product I search and trying to get me to "buy related products," it makes me think that we don't have to worry about the government monitoring us. All we have to worry about is the govt. getting Amazon and Google to turn over their records.

My experience with gmail has been that you do not need to create an explicit set of filters. Just go through the mail and hit the "This is spam" button on the gmail.com website. I get minimal spam and never get it a second time.
I have also gone through and identified a few "non-spam" messages but that is extremely rare.
It actually is worth it to use the gmail.com before downloading to my machine just to ensure that the spam filters are up to date.
I also use the "Delete all spam" button rather than waiting a full month for the automatic delete to kick in.

Don, have you forgotten the infamous "Uh, folks, I put a blank space into a spam filter and lost all my email" post?
I haven't.
Me and spaces in spam filters... bad idea.
I think the lottery one is mostly taking are of it. You see, I've won the European lottery at least a hundred times by now.
