They counseled the Jews to go into the camps without a fight, the least they could have done is join them by speaking out against their treatment. But the moment came for the Church to take a stand, and their leader fell silent from fear for his earthly life. And even his submission to the Nazis only bought the Church another year or two before their priests started disappearing into the camps anyhow, for doing what they could as individuals the things the Church would not do as an organization. If the Pope wouldn't dare face death for Jesus's teachings, how can they expect anyone else to? What is the purpose of holy men, but to give their lives over to their beliefs? That would have been quite noble, but it also would have gotten the Vatican overrun and probably many of the people there sent to camps also.
