One of those “Brooklyn-born Jews” that some British writers love to hate has just told Ehud Olmert, well, the same things I’ve been writing for quite some time: That Olmert is a major screwup and Israel needs better leadership.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is a failure and should resign, New York State Assemblyman Dov Hikind says in full-page ads published this weekend in Jewish newspapers throughout the United States and set to appear, too, in mainstream US papers and in the Israeli press.

“Ehud Olmert is weak when he should be strong, demonstrating ineptitude and incompetence in the face of growing threats from Hamas, Hizbullah, Iran and Syria,” the ad says. It says Olmert should resign, “for the sake of Israel and the Jewish people.”

Hikind, an Orthodox Jew who represents Brooklyn’s largely ultra-Orthodox Boro Park neighborhood, has long been an outspoken advocate of right-wing policies.

The ad campaign was an attempt to encourage debate, he told The Jerusalem Post. He said the issue was not whether to give up land, but what to do with an indecisive prime minister.

“When talking about the situation which is unfolding, one must come to the conclusion that it is disastrous,” Hikind told the Post. “We’re talking about indecisiveness, and that’s dangerous.”

I’d say something, but, well, Dov has pretty much said it all. The thing is, I don’t believe Israel has much of a choice as successor. Bibi Netanyahu is barely acceptable. And I can’t see anyone else rising to take over in what will possibly be Israel’s most trying times since 1948.

But I have to say, I like Dov’s nerve. Ads in Israeli and American papers. Wow.

So yesterday in Tehran, meeting with his puppet-master, Ismail Haniyeh, the DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED Prime Minister of the PA, said that Hamas will never—that would mean, not ever—recognize Israel. Oh, and that they won’t stop fighting until Israel is gone and an Islamic state is in its place.

Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh told thousands of Iranians on Friday that his Hamas-led government will never recognize Israel and will continue to fight for the “liberation of Jerusalem.”

Making his first visit abroad since the militant group took power in March, Haniyeh blasted U.S. demands that Hamas recognize Israel as a basis for renewed peace talks and before international aid to the Palestinians resumes.

The U.S. “and Zionists … want us to recognize the usurpation of the Palestinian lands and stop jihad and resistance and accept the agreements reached with the Zionist enemies in the past,” Haniyeh told worshippers at Tehran University.

According to the UN, 65 percent of Palestinians were living in poverty and 29 percent were unemployed. The Palestinian health care system is running out of medicine and on the verge of collapse, and nearly 50 percent of Palestinians do not have reliable access to food.

In addition, some 160,000 Palestinian Authority employees, who support about a million people, have not received their paychecks in recent months.

Palestinian Authority Planning Minister Samir Abu Aisheh of Hamas said the cash that was brought by Hamas officials was handed over to the PA Finance Ministry. He also revealed that the Hamas-led government has managed to pay 69% of the salaries to the PA’s 160,000 civil servants during the same period.

PA officials are eagerly anticipating a possible crack in the economic siege imposed on the Palestinians.

The Palestinian news agency Maan, quoting a senior member of the Palestinian government, reported Wednesday that “ministers of the Hamas-led government recently held talks with European countries and with a delegation of the American Democratic Party.

According to the source, in the talks, the European officials showed their understanding for Hamas’ stance.

I am starting to believe the hardliners who say that the EU is simply outsourcing their anti-Semitism to the Arabs this time around.
