French soccer mob tries to kill Jews

This article has been on my Google News page for weeks:

Anti-Semitic attacks in France have dropped drastically because of a number of government initiatives, France’s prime minister claimed.

“We have obtained real results” since launching a crackdown in 2002, Dominique de Villepin said in remarks delivered to a World Jewish Congress gathering Nov. 12 and released Monday by the French Foreign Ministry.

“In 2005, anti-Semitic acts fell by 47 percent compared with the previous year.

The figures available today for 2006 confirm this downward trend.”

Among other measures, de Villepin said 1,200 police officers are exclusively assigned to protecting the Jewish community.

I didn’t post about it becase I don’t really believe it. Turns out I was right:

French President Jacques Chirac on Friday condemned the violence that resulted in a shooting death after 100 Paris Saint-Germain fans attacked a supporter of an Israeli club on the previous day.

“They were shouting ‘filthy Jew’ and when they saw our colleague, who comes from the Caribbean, they also yelled, ‘filthy black, we’re going to get you,” said a police union official, Luc Poignant.

[…] Police said the two men who were shot were members of PSG’s far-right fan base that has a notorious violent and racist history.

Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy said some of the PSG supporters had shouted “Death to the Jew” as they attacked the Hapoel fan. The officer first responded with tear gas, but was knocked to the ground by a blow to the head and kick to the stomach, Sarkozy said. He then drew his gun and opened fire.

“Two men fell to the ground, of which one died from his wounds, while the other suffered a lung injury,” Sarkozy said.

The officer and the Hapoel fan eventually sought refuge in a nearby fast-food restaurant until police reinforcements arrived, officials said.

So now the penalty for being a Jewish soccer fan in France is death.

Time to go, mes amis.

  1. nobody important says:

Being a soccer fan? No. Being a Jew????

    um…read that article again.

Apparently, the penalty for ATTACKING a Jewish soccer fan in France is death. (OK, it’s actually the penalty for attacking a cop defending a Jewish soccer fan.)

  3. Jamie, how blind are you? A mob of 100 people were attacking the Jew. They were shouting “Death to the Jew!”

Do you think they were going to invite him for a cup of tea?

  4. James Curran says:

Tea? No, but there’s no evidence in the story that the mob was going to go as far as killing the men. Wear a Red Sox cap to a Yankees game, and you’ll get shouts of “kill the Bastard” and maybe some shoves, but nothing truly life-threatening. We are talking about a mob so fierce that they could not breach the barricade of … a fast-food resturant.

Further, the entire point of you post is to paint an entire country based on the actions of a mob of drunken soccer hooligans.

  5. Alan Furman says:

In Britain, once a thug breaks into your “home” your only legal right is to run away. So the answer to your question is: as blind as a hoplophobic British judge.

A mob of 100 people were attacking the Jew. They were shouting “Death to the Jew!”

    Such sweet lovable fascist skinheads.

  6. Jamie, your ignorance is appalling, and it’s making you look like an ass.

You obviously know nothing at all about French anti-Semitism. Jews have been murdered in France recently, and are in danger of being murdered every day. The French have had to assign extra police to Jewish neighborhoods to protect them.

Don’t compare the crowds at an American baseball game, where mobs typically do not attempt to lynch people, with the mob in France that tried to kill a Jew.

The PSG fans had gone on the rampage on Thursday night after watching their team sink to an ignominious 4-2 defeat. Jewish fans were targeted by groups of youths yelling anti-semitic slogans and performing Nazi salutes. Yanniv Hazout, 23, was chased and separated from his friends. Granomort was guarding police vehicles and stepped in, ordering Hazout to take cover behind him as he sought to face down the mob. Perhaps uncertain as to whether Granomort was a policeman because he was in civilian clothing, the youths attacked. Granomort used tear gas but was overpowered. He fired a shot and in the ensuing confusion Granomort and Hazout were able to escape to a McDonald’s, where staff quickly locked the doors behind them. PSG fans then laid siege to the building, smashing windows and continuing to chant racist slogans before police backup eventually arrived on the scene.

I don’t base my posts only on the news article that I am writing about. I base them on the knowledge I have gained over years of ingesting news reports and other information. I know what I am talking about, because I rely on factual backup of the statements that I make.

Try doing a little more research before you write your comments. Then you won’t look like such an idiot.
