New TV show

Heroes, on NBC. Two words: Watch it.

If you ever liked comic books or superheroes, you’re going to love the show.

NBC is repeating it tomorrow night at 8.

I loved it.

They haven’t found the brick yet, but I’m sure we’ll get him. (For non-comics readers, the brick is the super-strong character. Hulk was the brick in the Avengers.)

  1. Meryl, re: brick. What are the other superhero categories?

  2. Um, I don’t remember. It was a long, long time ago, and I only picked up that term because a friend of mine played the Champions RPG.

The Thing of the Fantastic Four is another brick. Almost literally.

I think the only two requirements on a team are the brick and the leader. Everything else can vary, but without someone to figure out what to do, and someone strong enough to stop a firetruck from falling off a bridge, your team kinda sucks. And kinda dies pretty fast.

Of course, all bets are off in most DC teams that were formed in the 60s. They tended to be overpopulated and dominated by Superman, who at that time had powers that could probably have taken God in a fair fight. Which is why they de-powered him in the 70s.

  3. Is it a spidey black costume or red costume type of show?

I always thought of Iron Man as the avenger’s brick.

  4. Well, after the Hulk left, sure, it could be Iron Man. Or Thor. Or Hercules. Or any of the gazillion other bricks.

But when Hulk was there? Just the Hulk.

Hulk can kick every Avenger butt. In fact, if I’m not mistaken, that’s why they all got together in the first place–to stop the Hulk.

    Who kicked their asses.

Hulk is the strongest one there is.

  5. Dunno what kind of show it is yet. It’s only the first one. It’s about ordinary people suddenly getting superpowers around the same time, and some mysterious agency that seems to know who they all are (and killed the dude who figured out what was happening in the first episode).

Really good first episode. Gave you just enough to want more, although there were a couple of eye-rolling dialogue moments (mostly with the artist who suddenly became clairvoyant).

And it’s got a phenomenal cast, half of whom you’re going to look at and say, “I know I’ve seen him before!”

  6. So, is this one a better stab from NBC at anything close to “science fiction” compared to their phenomenally flop (but instant camp classic) Surface?

    Comment by O.F. Jay — 09/26/2006 @ 7:49 am

  7. I watched Surface for a few minutes and didn’t like it, so in my opinion, yep.

I REALLY liked Heroes. A lot.

  8. I hope that the Lost-ripoff “everyone is connected” coincidences don’t last past the first few episodes, but beyond that I really liked it as well.

    Other SuperHero(tm) types:

The Leader/Strategist: Cyclops, Mr. Fantastic, Captain America

The Energy Projector: Human Torch, Green Lantern, Iceman,

    Martial Artist/Scrapper: Batman, Wolverine

Gageteer/Technologist: Iron Man, Ant Man, Booster Gold

Magician/Psychic: Doctor Strange, Jean Grey, Zatanna, Dr. Fate, Karma

Of course lots of heroes combine and mix up the types, for example Black Canary is equal amounts Martial Artist and Energy Projector. Hawkeye is a Gageteer, Scrapper and Leader.

  9. Thanks for the recommendation. Saw the first episode. Very well done.

Does anyone remember that short-lived 80’s series, Misfits of Science?

  10. Tom P. – that was a great series!

Heroes looks good – especially in HD. As for the “everyone is connected” coincidences, I’m going to bet that they end up not being coincidences. But that’s just me.

  11. Nope, I don’t remember that one.

But if anyone missed the premiere and wants to see it, it’s on NBC.com, too.

  12. Excellent program. I especially like Japanese cubicle-dwelling Spock-worshiping Kitty-Pryde-collecting time-and-space bender. My Hiro!

One question. Don’t cheerleader outfits catch fire and burn off whilst standing in the middle of a fiery inferno? Or is that only for the cable re-broadcast?

  13. Very good program. Thanks for recommending it.

  14. I hold out a lot of hope for this program. Caught most of Episode One (missed the first 15 minutes) but liked what I saw – a lot.

Hope they don’t screw it up…

  15. I think that the brick may be the woman from Las Vegas with the smart child (who may be the gadgeteer) who strips for the webcam. Consider what she did to the two loan shark enforcers when she blacked out.
