Go to bed laughing

It’s after nine p.m. here, and Janet just sent me this YouTube video.

It’s “Tradition” from Fiddler on the Roof—in Japanese. By Japanese actors.

Hilarious.

    Avoid the Gefilte fish sushi.
Did the Rabbi’s prayer translate as “May G-d bless and keep the Shogun – far away from us?”

Wow, that was actually quite good! I’ve seen much worse productions…

Funniest cross-cultural trainwreck I’ve ever heard still goes to the original Japanese version of Kingdom Hearts II. For those who don’t play video games, it was the sequel to a game that combined the creative teams at SquareSoft (creators of the Final Fantasy series, which are legends of the video game industry) and Disney (who I hope need no introduction).

One segment of the game involved the heroes, Sora (spiky haired anime hero, think Yu-Gi from “Yu-Gi-Oh!”), Donald Duck, and Goofy, travelling to the Little Mermaid universe to take part in Sebastian’s performance of “Under The Sea.” For those too old for cartoons, Sebastian was the crab with the Jamaican accent. The voice actor who played him in the movie wasn’t available for the game, so they hired a Japanese voice actor.

And they had him sing an American song in Japanese.

With a Jamaican accent. Or as close to one as the voice actor could manage.
