Oh, look, it’s another sow’s ear and the media thinks it’s a silk purse: Hamas and Fatah have formed a “unity government,” and already, the media and EU are claiming it’s another “implicit” recognition of Israel.

While he said Hamas will not recognize Israel’s right to exist a key demand by Israel and the West the new coalition agreement is based on a platform that many believe implies recognition to the Jewish state.

Phew, the headline said “Christian-Jewish groups,” and I thought it was you-know-who.

The head of the Chicago-based International Fellowship of Christians and Jews pledged to contribute up to $45 million this year to the State of Israel from money donated by Christian Evangelical supporters, in what would be the largest-ever annual financial contribution the group has made in its 23-year history.

Elie Wiesel says Iran should not be a member of the UN. I’m with him.

Nobel Prize winner Eli Wiesel on Tuesday joined the ranks of those demanding that Iran be removed from the UN.

Wiesel said at the opening of the UN General Assembly that “we know how the Ahmadinejad’s bath begins, but we don’t know how it will end.”

Terrorists attacked the U.S. embassy in Damascus. Terrorists died. But they did manage to wound a Chinese ambassador. I doubt, however, this will stop the Chinese from sending arms to Syria.

Direct / indirect

There is some noise in the media about the brand new PA unity government and the Abbas-Haniyeh agreement.

The breakthrough in the Abbas-Haniyeh talks came after the Hamas leader agreed to indirect recognition of Israel, senior Hamas sources said. He did this, they added, by adopting the Arab peace initiative as the basis for the new government’s diplomatic platform.

Of course, some Western newspapers are already seeing in these news a breakthrough in the Israeli / Palestinian stand-off. Some people should cool off a bit, because:

Hamas insists it will not change its charter, which calls for Israel to be replaced by an Islamic state. “We will never recognize the legitimacy of the occupation,” said Sami Abu Zuhri, a spokesman.

So what does this “indirect recognition mean”? I have used the good services of a dictionary:

1. Adjective: direct

Direct in spatial dimensions; proceeding without deviation or interruption; straight and short
“a direct route”; “a direct flight”; “a direct hit”

2. Adjective: indirect

Not direct in spatial dimension; not leading by a straight line or course to a destination
“sometimes taking an indirect path saves time”; “must take an indirect course in sailing”

This clears the issue quite effectively. So, most probably, guns and knives are passe now, and Qassam rockets and their derivatives are all the rage. A refreshing change, indeed.

I wonder how would suicide bombers be classified, though…
