The IDF, of course, has terrific artillery capabilities, and, obviously, a shell is cheaper than a missile. As I've been saying for some time now, we'll know that Israel is serious about dealing with the Pallies when instead of sending in infantry and armor, they start using artillery in quantity. Is the lastest news the opening salvo of Israel really warring against the Hamasards? The real "declaration of war" is something that I do think Hamas will fail to recognize, though; being turned into fly food kind of makes that impossible.
