After having visited China several times in the 1980's and 1990's, I don't know whether the Chinese have American restaurants...but I do know that on Sunday nights, they like to go out for Jewish.

"We'll have the borscht mit (parve) sour cream, the flanken, a bissel cholent, and a side of kishke. And you should bring also some half-sours."

- overheard at the Dong Fang Deli, Guangzhou.

Hmmm...I'm not so sure. More to the point, do the Chinese love Jewish food?

Yeah, but it's not what the "real Americans" eat. In bigger cities, the restaurants have additional menus just in English, with stuff that's not really to Asian tastes.

I can't seem to find it on the net but Orson Bean, years ago, had a sketch about the two Chinese guys who go to America Town for dinner.

It's just an inversion of all the cliches. They try to order in American: "You bring us one order, bay..con and a egg-a-zah," tell the old joke about American women, and agree that American food is very good but an hour after you eat it you're hungry again.

I am sure they have there own inside jokes and slang terms as we do.

One thing that they find humorous in a very ... ahem ... general fashion ... is the size of our noses and ears, which are _generally_ significantly larger.

As one TA at the university put it (after staring at me in a curious, yet humorous way), I look 'very... European'. She then giggled - but in a nice way. :)

... and no, I am not a cross between Alfred E Newmann and Cyrano De Bergerac... but the grafitti in the Orient does make us look that way.

Actually, I could see Chinese couples saying that, or "Let's forego the ordinary dumplings and stir-fry and go with a big fat burger."

Well, sorta. But do Chinese couples say, "Hey, want to get American on the way home tonight?"

These are the things that cross my mind when they don't keep me busy enough at work.
